I have the black box with the red emblum on it version of this game. This game is one of my favorites, besides Medal of Honor series and Call of Duty. This is just a different kind of good game. If I was movie director, I would pick up on this title and make a movie out of this one. It would probably break box office records at the theaters, hehe. Anyways a good game, the only small thing I didn't like is all the zombie stuff, and the ending was alittle bit to outragious. Other than that, great game it was.

Awsome

Well, for a game that's several years old, in a genre where it takes the average game 1 month to be old news and another to be almost forgotten, this is still one of the most overwhelmingly immersive games out there. In another review, I gave my highest praise to FarCry, and indeed, on the technological side, FarCry has RtCW beat, with more details, dynamic shadow rendering, and rag-doll physics. Nevertheless, the music, the environment, the enemies in RtCW, are all so gripping and immersive, you'll never notice! The original Wolfenstein was great; this one is fantastic. The story is probably the best in any sci-fi FPS I've ever played.

I can't offer high enough praise for this game. It certainly vies for my "best FPS ever", depending on what one is looking for in a game. The most modern physics and technology isn't found in RtCW, but the best, creepiest, most immersive environments certainly are. The music is fantastic, the soundbytes are fantastic, the levels are well-constructed and varied, the game offers the player some instances of run & gun, some of the most careful stealth (you have to manage to stay JUST outside the detection threshhold of some enemies with very keen eyesigh), and everything in between. The gameplay is brilliant, never repetitive, and well-balanced.

The multiplayer component is also fantastic, with a great community of public servers, clans and tournaments still alive and kicking after all these years.

This is a terrific game, well worth any FPS gamer's time and money! Enjoy!

One of the best games out there

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is probably one of the best games to ever come out on PC. Its single-player is excellent. Who doesnt like killing zombies and nazis?(If you dont then you have some serious problems :P)The only problem with the single-player is the enemy AI. Even on the hardest setting "Im a death incarnate" the game is still too easy. The enemies act the same on every difficulty just about. Oh well. Still fun!

But the best fun is when you take this game for a spin ONLINE! This is one of the best team games I have ever played in my life. When you play RTCW online TEAMWORK IS A MUST! You WILL NOT survive without teamwork. You have 4 classes to pick from, Soldier, Engineer, Medic, and Lieutenant. Soldiers get to use heavy weapons like Panzerfausts(rocket launcher)and Flamethrowers. Engineers get to plant dynamite and repair various items. Medics get to give out medpacks and revive soldiers who are down but not dead. Lieutenants get to give out ammo and call in airstrikes and artillery strikes.

Whatever class you pick, you will need to rely on another class to survive and win the match. Thats the way the game works online.

Also RTCW has some great maps too like Beach Invasion, and Destruction. Even HUGE maps like Depot and Tram(my god these maps are huge).

Overall extremely fun game! You cant say your a FPS fan until you have picked up this game.

Happy Nazi & Zombie killings :)

Were you expecting "History on Film" with Ann Medina?

Well, where to begin? This game was overwhelmingly satisfying in every way imagineable. My friend showed me it earlier this year, and it still hasn't lost any of its edge!

I loved the overall story with the Himler and the SS, HeinrichI, undead, etc. I've always been a sucker for the whole Nazi/occult thing, and this was no exception.

The music was also top-notch. I've caught myself absently humming it during the day, and stop abruptly since everyone is staring at me. The catacomb score was downright eerie, perfect for that particuar gameplay. The piece from the opening cutscene was so good I restarted the game several times just to hear it!

I thought the variation in levels was pretty good, my favourites being the Castle and the village levels. The assortment of bad guyswas decent, too. Overhearing the horrified officers(you know the ones), the angry mechanics, (them, too), and all the others was both interesting and amusing. Severalpeople have been complaining in these reviews about how the levels are kind of dark, but that's to be expected. It's wartime Europe, people, not a commercial for Lemon Tide!

The choices of weapons were varied- something for everyone!TIP:Ignore the flamethrower, it's prety much useless. I preferred the Thompson and double .45s(sigh) but it was a shame that they came with limited ammo. Oh, well.

I wanted to really say something clearly to all the people I've read who claim this has nothing to do with WWII and the zombie thing is overdone:
For the love of God, open your eyes! This is a COMPUTER GAME, not fact! F-I-C-T-I-O_N! What did you think was going to happen, you'd singlehandedly win the Battle of the Bulge?! Meet Hitler?! Try to kill him?! NO! This is a game, manufactured for the purpose to entertain for a price. And so what if Nazis once again intermingle with the supernatural? It works. It's entertaining. Period.

People have also been whining about the toughness of the game. I admit that I can't beat it on "Bring 'em on", but at least I didn't have to use cheat codes for "Don't Hurt Me". I managed to beat RTCW in a little under a week, and people (who are clearly exaggerating) claim to be still stuck on Level 2. Two. Ten second of life? Please, stop embarrassing yourself. Or just stop lying.

I think I've said my bit on Return to Castle Wolfenstein. In my humble opinion, I say buy it, play it, and play it again.

Great game, but who hasn't said that already!

This is the best game I have ever played. It is funner than Quake (III) becuase you can actually go on MISSIONS with OBJECTIVES. It is a great story, not much of World War II, but it makes more sense than the original Wolfenstein. You get to ride a cable car, kill undead guys who attack you with ghosts, and some fire breathing ones, and much more. But some of the graphics are pretty cheesy becuase when you destroy a painting or flag, it usually just disappears and you don't see anything on the ground! I also hate the damage flash because the scrren turns totally red, instead of only a small amount or large amount, depending on the damage, like in the original Wolfenstein. It's a quite fun game with cheats too. Please buy this game, it's the best. Just make sure you have a smooth computer, and carefully look at the system requirements.

This has to be the best first person shooter ever. I've tried MOHAA and BF1942 but the characters and the way the game plays is just NOT the same. Single Player is tough (this is for the guy who said he died every 10 seconds) so you have to get good at it before you beat the game. Multiplayer maps are medium/small size and as soon as you jump in the action is waiting for you. BF1942 and MOHAA the maps seem to be too big and if server has low amount of players it takes forever to find someone you can kill. Wolf on the other hand is all action and a team-based game as Lieutenants share ammo, Medics share health packs, Engineers plant dynamite, etc... BUY this game NOW, you won't regret it. I would give it 10 stars if I could. There are literally 100s of custom made maps you can download for single and multiplayer levels too.

don't buy this game

What are the most popular (and overused) enemies in video games?

1. zombies
2. nazis

This game gives us both. I wish that a game would try to give us some original enemies instead of constantly going back to the old zombies and nazis. Ok, I know its a WWII game but they should have just left out the zombies. They didn't really seem to fit well in the game anyway.

Problems:

1. I had a problem with the sound during the opening movie sequence of the game. The sound would always break up during this part and I would end up with no sound for the rest of this movie sequence. But then the sound would be back to normal for the regular game. This was just annoying because I didn't know what they were saying during this opening movie.
2. I had heard that the flamethrower was one of the best parts of this game, but I think it [is not good]. I would have to shoot it for a couple of seconds at a guy before he would die, and by the time he did I would have gotten so shot up by him that I would have no health left. It was just too slow. Also, it ran out too fast. And, in the instruction manual it says that the flamethrower works great against zombies, but I never remember even having a flamethrower during the zombie parts.
3. The most annoying part of the game was an attack that the game designers gave to the final boss and also boss1. These bosses would spit ghosts at you, and when these ghosts would hit you, you would not only take alot of damage but you would also not be able to see for a second or two. And, once you were able to see you would almost immediately be hit by another flying ghost and lose sight again. Anytime that I was fighting either of these bosses and I was hit by these flying ghosts (which was most of the time) I would have a few seconds of my vision going in and out and then I was quickly dead. This was the most annoying attack that I have ever seen in any game. When your vision would go out it was nearly impossible to hit the enemy or to try to find cover. And, there would be so many flying ghosts hitting you that after the first one hit it was almost impossible to recover without having to reload your game. I thought that this attack was really disorienting and just frustrating because it didn't even give you an opportunity to retaliate.
4. I thought that the difficulty of the game was too high. What is the point of letting a person chose a difficulty setting if the lowest setting is impossibly difficult? I was playing the game on the lowest difficulty setting and I found it to be absolutely impossible to win the game on even this lowest difficulty. Fighting the nazis was OK and I thought the zombies were challenging but not unbeatable. The first boss was very difficult but not impossible. The problems really started when I got to the x-creatures. The first x-creatures with no legs were unbelievably tough. The instant one saw me it would jump at me at kill me in about 2 seconds even if I had full health and full armor. Even if I blasted the hell out of it with some of my heaviest weapons it seemed to not kill it. I don't get why they made these creatures so much stronger than the nazis. It just doesn't make sense. When I got to the level with the supersoldiers I had to use an invincibility cheat to continue with the rest of the game. I never would have been able to beat the rest of the game against these unstoppable enemies. The game designers made these creatures attacks much too strong. (I was getting killed in 1 second.) They were also too hard to kill. So this is another complaint that I have about the game.

I also had a glitch where some of the time when a grenade or a rocket exploded, I would see a lot of numbers or letters in the explosion. I don't know if everyone had this problem. This was just a small thing that didn't bother me like the other things that I have written about above.

So, I would say not to buy this game since it is impossible to beat without using cheat codes. I thought this game was going to be a lot better than it was. There has to be better games out there to buy rather than this one.

Not a classic in my book

Judging from the other reviews of this game I read on Amazon and on other sites I was truly expecting to be impressed. The fact of the matter is that I wasn't - and here is why:

- The settings of the game are, more often than not, in some darkened basement, house, or outside at night. The ones that weren't like the level where you infiltrate the camp in search of the sniper rifle, were enjoyable to play and took advantage of the graphic capabilities of the game. The dark maps were just boring and hard to see in. Even after extensive in game and video card tweaking I couldn't get the game where I could see it without eye strain.

- I wasn't around in WW2 and can't say for positive but I'm pretty sure the Nazi's didn't resemble the bad guys in a 1960's James Bond movie. Leather halter tops and hot pants on the female soldiers? Goatee's on the SS guys? Laser guns and night vision scopes? The folks at Activision might as well have replaced the paintings of Hitler on some of the walls with Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator. It angers me to see people water down and nicen up history and evil to turn a buck on it.

- The same rehashed FPS cliche's that were invented way back when the original Wolfenstein, and later Doom, Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, etc. are still used here. After big fights you find a room with health packs and ammo in it. Can't someone come up with a more inventive damage and resupply system than that? Is that going to be the way FPS game are when I'm a senior citizen?

In short I think the only thing that sets this game apart is the use of some superior video processing technology, and maybe the creativity of some of the maps (layout). The story is lame, the gameplay is often times boring, the settings are straight out of any haunted house horror movie that has ever gone straight to video.

It must not have been much of a year if this was the best that came out.
