Why have gaming magazines been calling this an RPG?

Let me say for a moment that for what this game is, I think it's simple, a little bit fun, and generally okay. The style of fighting they used in this game and the powers you can use while doing so are generally fun and enjoyable the first time you play. You might get tired of it after a while. It lasted me a few hours or so.
But anyways, it's not a bad little game overall. Just one problem, though. Lots of people in gaming magazines and such have been referring to this as a "Dragon Ball Z" RPG. Yeah, right. Donkey Kong 64 was as much an RPG as this game was. Basically, they have you collect "health capsules" and "ki capsules" across several stages while fighting off hordes of bad guys. Collect ten health capsules and your max health will increase. Collect ten ki capsules and your max ki (like DBZ mana) will increase. Other than this, the only rpg-like element in the game is the move-earning, and not really that much. There are about 19-20 power-ups you can earn, most of which don't impact your style of fighting too much, though a few (like teleportation) do help to keep it fresh on your first play-through. But Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 was more of an RPG than this game BY FAR. At least it had experience points. The fighting was also better in that game by far.
Now, I did give this game a fair shot, and I'm a big fan of Dragon Ball Z, but as a fan, I'd like to see an ACTUAL DBZ RPG that will fulfill the potential of a Dragon Ball Z game. By this I mean training = gaining experience. Use weights/increased gravity to gain more experience, start out weak enough that frieza can kill you in one hit and slowly work your way up to his level and beyond (you know, like in the series!) Seriously, I can't be the only person who realizes that most of DBZ does not consist of fighting or exploring, but of training (gaining experience) and trembling in fear of an enemy strong enough to kill you in one swift motion. These are things that DBZ gamedom needs a real RPG to portray, but if this is the best they can do, we may never get such an RPG.

It had sooo much potential...

Ok. I'm a big DBZ fan. Have every single episode and what not and know nearly everything about it. I believe DBZ Legends (Import) for PS one is the best DBZ game ever made. It's near perfection. DBZ Budokai 3 is in a close second to best DBZ game. Now this. This is pretty much down there with those ultimate battle games... When I heard it would be an rpg, I was thinking "uh oh, if they don't do this right, it'll be a disaster...". Well Ladies and Gentleman, they BARELY got it to not! be a total flop...

The graphics are not that great... The animation in the ki charge and background explosions look nice but the hero's and villans look like a souped up N64 game.

The music is real serious, and follows the dreary battle aspects of the series, I guess... Doesn't really hype you up to fight in the game. We need some of that good ol' "We Gotta Power!" music back. :(

The storyline follows the shows pretty much perfectly. BUT with changes... like new lesser villans (like purple Saibamen). The game seems old and it was just released...

Gameplay. Ah, gameplay. NOT what you would expect, even from a DBZ game. If you've played Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu, it's almost just! like that, except worse. You go through fixed levels pixing up items that are always in the same location and then you buy upgrades for your characters. It all seems so fun but it's not. Blocking is hard to time, the teleport move when your locked on a characters doesn't always put you in the direction you want to go because of the characters line of sight, and reaction time to certain moves is ULTRA slow (even though I think you can buy an upgrade for that).

Like I said before, this game had! so much potential. You find yourself running around to much, trying! to control your character perfectly and it seems like Bah at times... I paid full price for it (which the game is not worth) and then saw it for cheaper elsewhere. I'm happy I reserved it though because I got a free Devil May Cry 3 screen for my apartment, lol. The plus' for the game is that it IS DBZ, the cut scenes (which show parts of the series and you can add to your library) look nice while the game loads, upgrading characters is always fun, and most of all, it's a 2-player game.

If your a fan and you find it for $40's and under, get it. I've played it on and off since I got it and I've liked it a taaaaad more each time. (I guess it's because I've gotten used to the controls a bit more.) If your looking for a really good DBZ game buy DBZ Budokai 3, that! wont disappoint you. Sagas should have delivered so much more for being a PS2 game.

Hey give Atari some slack

I found this game to be OK. It's one of the few attempts at a console DBZ RPG, and to tell you the truth, it's pretty creative. For one thing, it's real-time battles, and I've had experience at such games, like Phantasy Star Online (which is amazingly good even offline). You have your basic Kamehamehas and Galick Guns and Masenkos, etc. Like I expected, you have to buy those kinds of skills. You have to buy combos as well (what the h#!!) and you gather capsules to increase your health and energy. The game is challenging with the AI, especially the bosses (it took me a good deal of time to beat him). If you are a DBZ fan, a definite buy to add to your collection or to have fun playing. Non-DBZ fans, beware. Real-Time RPG fans, rent (maybe...).

A great new game since Budokai!

I think this is cool because with this game you can actually explore many different places in Dragon Ball Z Sagas I mean it's an Action/Adventure not an RPG, I mean the DBZ games for the game boy advance like The Legacy of Goku 1,2,3 They are considered RPG games. But hey this is really cool and this is a must buy!

Good stuff and Bad stuff

All Right, this game is fun. You don't have to agree with me but this game is like a DBZ version of Kingdom hearts, you walk around kill people. It is easy though, it took me a day to beat it. It starts out with Raditz and ends with the Gohan vs Cell fight. In a way its like budokai one. The two player action makes it even better. I give the grafics a 3.5 out of five for effort, their not TOO bad but they could have done better. So if your a DBZ fan, get this game, if you don't like DBZ but like VG's still buy this game. If you hate DBZ and everything about or don't like VG's, dont get this game.

best Dragonball Z game out of all

You cant go wrong with this game, Dragonball Z fan or not. any person who just likes video games would like this game. This is the first action/adventure game in the Dragonball series. All the other games were just 1 person on left side of screen other person on right side of screen but in this game the graphics are better, the gameplay is better, and there are more charecters to choose from.

It's ok but could be better.

Dragonballz Sagaz is an OK game nothing more. I'm sure it's better than the first 2 games of the bud. seris but the third one is far better than this(minus the teleportation skill). Even tho it takes DBZing to a new level it's not above average. The one good thing i can say that came out of this is the ability to teleport, this does make a difference in your fights along with the fast ki blast that are now there(no more combo's for great skills). Not to mention the fact after you better the game and get brolly NO ONE is ever a challenge(they uber strengthed him). Over all i think this game is ok but could be A LOT better but there working on it now so i'm waiting to be impressed.

A Simplistic and Decent Action-Adventure Game

Theres probably a ton of Dragonball Z fans who have been waiting to play a DBZ action/adventure game. Well, Sagas is pretty much that game, but for hardcore action-adventurer gamers or people who aren't really fans of DBZ, it not really much more than a simple beat-em-up action game.

Well anyway, for those of you who don't know the plot (Skip this paragraph if you do), it begins with the main character, Goku who is one of the few survivors of the Sayian race. When he crashes on Earth (Sound a little too Superman-like?), he learns to fly and pretty much becomes skilled in martial arts. When he is an adult, he has a son named Gohan and a good number of allies (Such as the three-eyed Tien and the alien Piccolo). His brother, Radtiz appears out of nowhere and pretty much kicks off the entire DBZ story. After Radtiz is defeated, Goku and his allies end up going through an entire series of episodes where he ends up battling his brother, a pair of Sayian warriors named Nappa and Vegeta (Vegeta eventually becomes their ally), a tyrant named Freiza, androids and a mutant named Cell. Sound a little complicated? It pretty much is.

Well anyway, you end up playing through the game starting from when Goku meets his brother Radtiz to the final battle with Cell. The level designs are pretty much simplistic and the formula is easy to get used to: Collect items, purchase upgrades, smash enemies and battle a boss. The game takes players through the majority of the Dragonball Z storyline. It provides a quick narration for those who don't know the story (Though you probably will end up getting intensely confused in the jumble of sumarrization of over 200 episodes) and replaces the load times with scenes of the episodes. Fans will probably rejoice at getting to watch a collage of scenes along with a familiar narration (And it saves you the boredom of load times).

The gameplay is somewhat linear. Basically players are thrown into the game with a preset loadout of characters depending on the level (For example, the first player gets the primary character and the second player gets the secondary character). The game's co-op mode makes it much more enjoyable...its much more fun bashing androids with a friend than alone.

Throughout the game, players get the chance to collect Z Coins or the game's currency. They get to stop at a flashing Z icon set on the level in which they can purchase a certain upgrade. These upgrades include increasing your flight speed, teleportation, combo moves and upgrading your melee attacks with roundhouses, uppercuts and grappling. The game is pretty true with the Dragonball Z storyline (Except with the enclusion of saibamen in the Cell Saga...whats up with that). For example, in certain boss battles (Such as against Vegeta, Frieza and Ginyu-Goku) when playing co-op mode, players end up switching turns playing by using the timer set on the screen. It makes the game more faithful to DBZ, but is kind of annoying.

The game isn't really anything more than a simple beat-em-up. You end up moving throughout the level (Collecting items such as health, energy and Z-Coins along the way) beating up enemies before an impending boss battle. Sometimes it seems to take forever to just clear forever, since you can't just ran past your enemies. Enemies sometimes constantly keep on spawning into the area and in later levels clearing just one section takes a good while.

The combat sequences are sometimes fun but get repetitive after a while. The enviroment is pretty interactive...a kick combo can send an enemy flying through a boulder or a building and embed them into a mountain wall. Plus you can't deny that sending an enemy flying into the air with a uppercut, teleporting behind them as they fly up and then preforming a special move to send them plummeting into the ground. The inclusion of boss battles in nearly every level is just well...repetitive though. Especially since some of the bosses don't really seem to be doing anything different. Yeah, you can notice that Recoome can make shockwaves and the Burter/Jeice battle allows them to preform team moves, but it still doesn't deviate from the already built-in formula.

The graphics look pretty good. They aren't cell shaded, but come close. The characters and enviroments retain their cartoony visuals and characters such as Goku, Trunks and Piccolo look great. The sound effects aren't great, but are pretty decent. The trademark groans and shouts as you power up are still included, and explosions and the solid smack as enemies fly through a solid object will probably appease fans. The voice acting sound pretty accurate as well. Oh, and the character animations are pretty well done too. DBZ can tell that when their character makes certain hand motions that they are about to preform one of their trademark moves. Each character gets a special attack (They purchase it automatically somewhere in the middle of the first level). For example, Goku's Kamehameha, Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon, Trunks's Burning Attack and Gohan's Masensako are all included.

The controls are pretty simple as well, but aren't perfect. The target locking system needs to be tuned a little more...it eventually begins to hurt your fingers after constantly tapping the R1 button. Plus there is no auto-locking feature, so without holding down the lock-on button, your punches and kicks end up going absolutely nowhere. Plus, the game's combat moves don't really seem to be pulled off correctly...characters kind of hang in one spot after they finish a combo which doesn't feel right. Plus, the punching and kicking seems kind of slurred and doesn't quite flow as it does in other action games such as Jak 3 or Spider-Man 2.

So, pretty much in conclusion, if you're a hardcore action gamer, I don't really suggest doing anything more than renting it. If you're a DBZ fan, I'd reccomend to rent it first. The game is way too short...after a good few days, you can easily beat it on Normal mode. So in conclusion...its pretty much a decent action/adventurer. Its definetely not worth buying, unless you're a MAJOR DBZ fan. And I mean major.

Get the game its awesome

This game was fun to play but way too short...If you are a fan of DBZ then you will like this game as I did...between losing lives, attempting to gain all the powerups and such in the game, it took about 4 hours to beat...this game spans from Raditz to Cell sagas...they lack alot of details from the show causing the game to be really short and easy...it's a decent game for $20 but I wouldn't recommend paying more...
