Do yourself a favor and get Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries

I play the actual board game and after playing this game I am disappointed. If you are into a huge arcade slugfest with little or no realism and wizkids abomination looks then get it. It's a game all about the bigger you are and the more ballistics you have the more kills you get.

They should have kept the game as a simulator but they changed it into a jacked up 1st person/3rd person shooter because of non BattleTech players who are too confused about controls and how a 'Mech actually works. So what you get is a dumbed down game with no real BattleTech in it (aren't energy weapons the primary weapons for a Mech anyway? So why are those so week.) but something that competes with all the stupid gundam. You can't even make some of the variants for the Clan `Mechs in this game or get into actual designing!

Fan of BattleTech? Get the board game, MechWarrior 2 Mercenaries because it is the greatest game I have ever played and MechWarrior 3 if you want something pretty close to the board game. Support the Classic BattleTech community, not a mainstream Microsoft butcher. I hope the money I put forth in this game will make MechWarrior 5 right, if it ever comes out...

One final thing, the most important thing is the Clan Technological edge over the Inner Sphere. Well, that does not exist in MechWarrior 4 and ruins one of the important BattleTech aspects.

I preformed plastic surgery on this game

Just a few words. This game could hve been remarkable, but as it stand now, it needs a little work. Thank you. I tweaked a few things on my computer, now the game runs smooth. To get the best results out of this game, simply run a mission for about a minute, or two, and the game will smoothen itself out.The Mek Paks, was the cause of most of the problems, and shared files, can offset the game somewhat, sometimes.

Lost Value and increased price as a standalone.

Battletech is a lot of fun and is going strong after 15 or so years, though its original form as a minature game is over and replaced with Mech Warrior: Dark Age, a very stupid and pointless game. The mech warrior video games used to be a lot more bound into Battletech but MW4 is still very fun. Vengeance was a dream, Black Knight was even better, and the Mek Paks were a good holdover to Mercs. Mercs was an expansion marketed as a standalone, which made it loose so much. The original maps were scrapped, MP game types minimized, weapons removed, and even some of the AI complexity. The took out the CTF game type for crissake. Also it claimed "full compatibility" with the mek paks. You can still only use the meks in MP, and everything else in them ships with mercs. I mostly play MultiPlayer and would have given it two stars execept for the stellar single player. Managing a buiseness, finding conrtacts, buying equepment. It's a lot of fun. The missions can tend to get a little over slugfestty somtimes, but on the whole they are interesting and startegic. You get rewards for taking honorable paths. (If you choose to fight the clans head on instead of ambush them you get a fully skilled pilot who works free). The number of choices is incredible. This game is worth [the money], and should be an expansion. I hope they fix all the MP problems in the sure to come WOB expansion and make it compatible with the mek paks in single player. Wait for the price to go down on this one.

Very Boring

This has got to be the most boring game I've ever played. All you do is shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot at a target for several minutes until it blows up. I don't mind shooters but it gets rather tedious when you have to spend so much time on just one target.

a tweeked sequel to a very good mech simulator

I finally broke down and purchased MW4:M now that it was $... US. Its just as good as the original MW4, with a few mostly beneficial changes. The ability to compete in in-game tourneys on solaris 7, and the lack of the mini-movies when you get a status report between missions (seemed to slow down menu functions a bit).

On the bad side, my rudder controls on my TopGun Afterburner joystick don't seem to work now (they did in MW4). Minor complaint, and this may have a workaround.

otherwise, its good to have a joystick with plenty of buttons for the game, and any modern computer should be able to run it at full resolution/ eye candy on.

MW4 is the best game i've played with-in a period of 3 years. I went to the gateway store and saw it on a computer, so i started to play. There is ONLY, and i mean only, one bad thing about MW4...It takes a while to figure out the controls.

Great game but could be better

I liked the game and I like Mech warrior, I wish that I could have the streaming video of Vengence. Also if you destroy the enamy mechs legs it go supernova instead of just falling down. I also don't like the over symplfied mechlab.

It Still is strong

Mechwarrior 4: Merenaries is a great game. It gives you new mechs, new weapons, and new maps. What more could you ask. It seems it is toaltally redone. Aside from the old mechs and gameplay it still is great. But it would have been better if they put in the mechs from the mech paks instead of people who didn't buy it have to buy it if they want it on MW4:M. But overall it still is great with new blood and that old school goodness.

Best of the series so far

I own all of the Mechwarrior series that run on the PC except for the very first installment. This one is by the best of the lot. I love some of the new Mechs intriduced in this game - my personal favorite is the Gladiator in the assault class with the Hellhound in the medium class.

Now if only MS will release MechAssault on the PC I will be truly happy.

Online against others is where its at

The game senerios are great training and alot of fun. But I found the most satisfaction playing online with others. Working together as a team to try and beat another group of people on a different team. Online gaming is free once you have purchased the base game. There are several organized ladder leagues that have lots of people that want to have fun too. A good example is Mechwarriorleagues if you can find it. There you can find a ton of additional maps and patches for new mech types.
The game runs alot like a 1st person shooter, but you are piloting a giant robot like machine: a Mech. Because you are in a big "Mech" you don't die with 1 or 2 shots like alot of shooter games, which makes this a good LAN party game as well. Friends that have never played it before can join in and have fun without feeling that they are just another target for person that is more experienced at this game.
