Not up to snuff

As a rabid First Person Shooter player I was a little dissapointed in this game. The main problems I had was the sluggish movement controls (as compared to other FPS games) and quite frankly, the weird story line which, I hasten to add, may be attractive to some people.

why need a high end grahpic card

I have a geforce 6600 card and still playing the game in low resolution and low graphic setting. Couple people said this game is super good because they work for seirra. If you designed a game why need only high end graphic card. you guys should concern the mid-range level card which owned by some poor students. They are also your market too. I can play Farcry with max resolution and max graphic setting and can only play FEAR in lowest resolution with lowest graphic setting.. it is a joke. I feel so sorry on those guys who owned 6800 below graphic card people..no you can't play this game.

Not all that

I read the reviews about being scary. What a joke but kinda cool.
Not better that Half Life 2 for sure.

Bell Curve

F.E.A.R. is a definate contender for the most intense FPS out there. The firefights are some of the best I have ever seen or been involved in. The graphics are phenomenal but I don't think they quite compare with Half-Life 2. Overall, the physics, graphics, and intensity make for one of the most innovative FPS to come out in a while. Mostly. I bought this game yesterday and just finished playing it so maybe over-exposure is helping write this review.
The one thing about this game is that it became less fun to play as I went along. At first I was thrilled with the enemy A.I. and the hellacious combat. The creepy apparitions and supernatural phenomenon actually made me jump in my seat. There was a constant chill whenever that disembodied voice would speak to me. The problems began about halfway through the game. After a while it becomes repetitious. The creepy voice becomes more annoying than anything and the random apparition appearances become tiresome. They keep trying to scare you with the same thing over and over and it quickly loses any fear factor.
I guess the level design is my biggest problem with this game. I can't remember how many air vents, tunnels, or corridors I had to go through to get to get past the locked door to the next room. The levels themselves are rather bland except for the lighting effects. And what's with the flashlight? It only works for like 20 seconds before needing a recharge. What super-soldier is going to use a crap flashight? Why not night-vision goggles? Or thermographic vision? Also, I always kept getting stuck behind things. Chairs that had fallen over, fire-extinguisher boxes sticking out of the wall etc. It always seemed to happen when I was in a fire-fight too.
There is a considerable amount of backtracking and there is no map function. Sometimes you are stuck wandering around trying to find your vague mission objective. Also I wish they had included more detail on your objectives and some sort of confirmation when you completed it. Most mission objectives read like "Find so-and-so's Office." And that's it. Your left to running around and looking for one poorly marked door. It gets a little frustrating. By the end of the game, the battles have gotten a little stale since there are so few different enemies and the entire final level is a complete let down. And I still have no idea what the plot was. It's convoluted and makes no sense when I try to figure it out. The psychic flashbacks become bothersome and also repetitive. It's almost like the nightmare levels of Max Payne. Overall, the best part of this game is the first half of it where most of the replay value lies. This game is fresh and exciting, but it really drags as the "story" unfolds towards the end, and it has the same crap ending like most other recent FPS'.

Under-spec comp, but still great game

I gave this game 5 stars even though I was unable to fully unlock this game's amazing potential. I am running a computer that is way under par when it came to this game, however after turning off the movies and sound, which by the way severely ruins the story line because you have no idea what is going on,I was able to play. With the graphics set at medium on an NVIDIA 5500 I was able to play with no trouble, minus sound. Even with this low end card the graphics were pretty good. This game has exciting fire fights and sometimes extremely creapy scenes, especially when one plays in the dark in their basement at 1 A.M. Great game!! I am looking forward to unlocking this game's full power.
**Have upgraded comp and this game rocks!!!!!! Very Creepy even after playing 6 times all the way through.

most overrated modern game there is

i've seen a LOT of overrated games, but this one amazed even me.

take max payne. remember how it was really hard without bullet time? ok. take away most of the bullet time, turn it into an FPS where you die every time you run out of bullet time (oh, excuse me, "slow-mo due to your guy's amazing reflexes"), include a bunch of super-standard guns and environments, and voila, a highly rated, great-selling game.

why do people love it? one word: GRAPHICS. yeah, those bullets look so amazing whizzing by you in slow-mo... who cares? looks don't make a great game. gameplay does.

Very good, but could have been better

Graphics, gameplay, and weapons are all great. And the last half hour of gameplay is spooky. But this spookiness is barely used in the game, and there is a lot of walking around where there could have been more enemies.

A very cool game overall, just could have been better.

It's not what you're thinking

This game is so popular only because of advertisement. Just think about these facts: the single player is so short that it take no longer than 4 hours, and the story is extremely stupid, especially the ending when there is nuclear explosion, and our hero flyes out of there on helecopter!!!
The multiplayer is one of the worst FPS multiplayers. Coupal weapons, similar maps, same skins and few stupid mods.
The ONLY thing about this game is its graphics, but they ain't looking SO good, it just will be VERY laggy, unless you have the BEST video card.
+It is secured by securom, which means if you have ANY cd-emulators installed, this game WILL NOT WORK.
Will say something like "security modul cannot be activated". If you ever had this problem with any games, you definitely will have it here.

A great mix of FPS and Horror but not for the faint of heart

This is one of the best shooters ever made. The graphics are awesome, the sound is great, the atmosphere is creepy, there are loads of gore, great weapons, and incredible A.I. Anyone who is a fan of first-person shooters or action games owes it to check this out.

Only one setback

I'm sure everything I could say has been said already. It's devilishly fun, innovative, excellent sound effects, not to mention downright scary...it's only setback, in my opinion, is it's length. I was able to rattle off this game on normal difficulty in just a little over 11 hours.
This, by no means, is 'short.' And, of course, the harder difficulties are more time consuming. But compared to many other FPS greats, it lacks a few hours.

Oh, but I do believe it is better than Half-Life 2 ;)
