Not as great as Far Cry

I'm just not digging F.E.A.R. You know I bought it based on the stellar reviews and not I'm saying it isn't at least a C+ title but really this game is pretty boring (so far).

Its definitely got spooks that is for sure...but that does not a fun game make (at least not for me).

Here is the thing...I just got done playing Half Life 2 in all its beautiful glory and the graphics here in F.E.A.R. are kinda lame in comparison..and it stutters a lot where HL2 was smooth. The enemy A.I? Well, pretty lame and pretty boring. I have heard that maybe I have to jack up the difficulty...okay..maybe..but honestly this is not even coming even close (not even HL2) to Far Cry on standard difficulty. The weapons are supposed to feel totally like nothing else? Hmm...not sure about that one. Doom 3 and HL2 and Far Cry might not have had it right, but I had no problems with them whatsoever!

Seriously I have only played Chapter 1 and only 3rd or 4th mission into it...really not very far along at all so I guess I should give it a chance still. But HL2 just kept my interest like no tomorrow from start to finish (although end was lame, albeit gorgeous looking, but lame in HL2). With F.E.A.R. I'm fighting to get myself to play and I'm only doing so because I sank 40 bucks into it.

I hear the ending is amazing, though, so that is something to look forward to.

After playing Doom 3, then Far Cry, then HL 2, and now F.E.A.R., Far Cry was the best and most enjoyable. Nothing exhilerated me more than that game.

Overated

I am dissapointed with this game. It does not feel as comfortable as Far Cry, Ghost Recon or Call of Duty. In Fear, it feels like I am moving like a Tank versus a sports car. Maybe it takes some getting use too. The weapons sounds are not that impressive either. It is missing the feel of a real gun shot. I felt like I was shooting marbles. It also feels like I am trigger happy. This game is definitely overrated.

not very good

this game has old graphics, a lame story, and is very buggy. it has lag in single player mode, i have updated it, still lags. I have a very high end machine and I am very disappointed in this game. Buy half life2 or quake 4 for a sci fi F-P-S or Call of Duty 2 for just a awesome F-P-S.

Most immersive FPS experience to date

I knew there was a reason that I bought a Radeon 9800. Initially, I thought it was to play Half-Life 2, but the guys at Monolith have really made me feel justified. Don't get me wrong - HL2 is a great game which set a new standard for the genre, but F.E.A.R. puts those few missing brushstrokes on the canvas which makes for a real work of art. It's an excellent mix of the traditional shoot-em-up, mixed with the tension of the psychological thriller, all presented in a finely engineered environment of physics and ambiance. The AI is also, bar none, the most advanced I have even experienced. It's kind of a hybrid of HL2, Splinter Cell, and Fatal Frame. At the risk of coming off as a girly man I'll be perfectly honest - this game scared the wits out of me. I had to take breaks embarassingly often to turn on the lights and check the corners of the room.

To be sure, this game is a HOG in terms of system requirements if played with anything more than moderate resolution or detail, but the physics engine along with the dynamic lighting and detailed environments really pay dividends for those of us lucky enough to have high end systems. I see on the gaming sites that Valve is moving their Steam engine along to include some of the more advanced lighting effects in the new games, so we'll have to see how they stack up in the end.

The reasons that I had to reserve one star are pretty simple: Firstly, the storyline does leave a little to be desired. It's fairly contrived, and lacks any real payoff. Many of the plot devices are repetitive and overdone, and the real jist of the story still eludes me for the most part. Secondly, many of the really excellent thrills were revealed in the demo, so that was kind of a spoiler. And thirdly, the system requirements are understandable, but still a roadblock to a lot of casual gamers.

Overall, the game is excellent, and well worth the time and money to experience. I hope to see more similar titles coming my way.

One of the Best Games Ever!!!

This games is awsome. The graphics are mindbobling with intelligent A.I. and sick body and enviroment physics. When you are fireing a gun it really feels like one. The sound is also very good, that makes you wet your pants. There is a good selection of guns and the most exciting feature is the slow-mo. Overall I think this is a great game if your computer can handle it.

This game rocks!!

I woke up early last Saterday and started playing. The next thing I knew, it was 3 o'clock in the Afternoon. This is a very immersive game. Though not as intresting as HL2 or action packed as Doom 3. It is an excellent shooter with graphics that will test any system. The sound is excellent..the best I've heard and there are some generally freaky parts. I agree that the worlds are a bit boring and the enemy's repetitive. The action is great as it requires alot more stealth and strategy to frag your oppenents. A very immersive game and a must own for any FPS freak like me. Buy it now and spend you day behind the screen.

Entertaining but short

I enjoyed this game with the following caveat: It's too short. The game play is well done and fun. It offers some interesting variations on the Quake/first-person shooter genre. The story line is a little trite, however. The "Ring" element seems forced and contrived. For a spooky "Ring" like game, check out the Fatal Frame series.

Excellent Game (Spoilers)

I Just finished FEAR and I have to agree with those who give it the big thumbs up.

VERY atmospheric, and when they say spine tingling- no kidding I had the shivers numerous times. (SPOILER HERE)Story was very good, best in a long while, but it would have been better with a few choices- I'd like to have been the one to Kill Harlen Wade (Bastard), Norton Mapes (Fat Bastard) and shooting my own brother and mom? NASTY.

Overall good game balance- You always think you're going to run out of ammo, if you're mindful of that, you never do. AI is very good- handed me my A** on more than one occasion.

It's a little short, perhaps thats a different way of saying I would have enjoyed more. Level design- Repeatitive? Maybe, but I didn't mind too much.

Half life 2 Killer? In as much as you don't have to deal with STEAM to play the thing YES- Otherwise who cares! play both!

FEAR is a GREAT Ride. 4.5 or even 4.75 stars. A few quirks off of perfect, but I'm a demanding guy. I am definately looking forwardto FEAR 2. Bravo.

Better than Half-Life 2

I had been seeing footage of F.E.A.R. for a long time. Everyone was hailing it the next 'Half-Life 2'. I was hyped, except for one thing: my mortal fear of ghosts (no kidding).

So I bought it anyways. And like everyone who truly loves games will say, it is downright amazing. Even on a subpar graphics card, I really felt as though I was there. Every twist, turn, bullet hit, and board to the face, you really feel in an amazingly detailed world. The game literally feels like it's running a better version of the Half-Life 2 graphics and physics engine, and an altogether amazingly done AI engine.

But what sets this game apart from all else, is it's surprisingly well done story line. Not even the movie 'Fight Club' had such a well done twisting turning loopy doopy story line. It is this that makes the game great for the hardcore and casual gamers. It'll keep you hooked until it's startling conclusion. Where others will tell you of the amazing AI, I'll tell you that you'll never see such a great cinematic story woven in.
