Crytek HITS ANOTHER HOMERUN

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 0 / 0
Date: September 05, 2008

FAR CRY was one of the best FPS games ever sold. It created such a following that can only be compared to that of UNREAL and the original HALF-LIFE. CRYTEK, the developer of both FAR CRY and CRYSIS, clearly did not rest on its laurels. CRYSIS is an *EVEN BETTER GAME* in many aspects.
And topping FAR CRY is NOT an easy task...

Graphically the game is GORGEOUS! (Both DX10 and DX9 compatible). Moving in the jungle is just unbelievable: the natural foliage, the game of light and shadow, the clear flowing water...The weapons are exceptionally well designed (familiar shapes but mostly futuristic) and their muzzle flashes add to the game realism. Replenishing your ammo is almost never a problem, provided you are frugal with your sniper bullets. A nice cross-genre touch: most weapons are enhanceable with targeting-lasers, sniper-sights and silencers.
The "weapon" you will enjoy more is, of course, the nanite-muscle-suit, a kind of augmenting exoskeleton that serves as both armor and turning you into a super-human. Throwing your enemies over the tree tops can be really fun - and their limp movements and shouted insults are totally realistic! Speaking of realism, wait to reach the zero-gravity levels: the weapons' kick will propel you backwards - as it should!
And, importantly, CRYSIS is much more graphically stable than, say, FEAR-PERSEUS MANDATE or BIOSHOCK, although graphically clearly superior.

The sound has also been well worked on. There are a number of moments where sound clues are the warning you will get. The sound of an enemy crawling towards you is not a good omen...So get rid of those old headphones and plug in a good set of speakers.

The levels are beautifully designed and the AI PHENOMENAL! I had a group of enemies flank me as I was engaged with their comrade who was left as bait! Shoot an enemy from cover only to watch him seek cover as well - until he or one of his comrades spot your position!
Overall, the gameplay controls is very similar to that of FAR CRY (and most FPS nowadays). I do have to point out that movement is precise and effective. Running is fast whereas crouching is stealthy. For longer distances, vehicles become available.
The game also sports a multiplayer - although it may require seriously lowering the video specs to avoid lagging.

That is the main problem with CRYSIS: it is excessively demanding in hardware! Short of an expensive uber-computer one will not experience the full potential of the game without glitches. When VALVE can do miracles even with 2004 computers, this is poor workmanship, and it cost them a star.

Now, this game (being an EA release) sports ...SecuROM. Usually I subtract at least two stars from games burdening us with such dangerous security routines. However, I liked the game so much I felt torn - and decided to make a more generous exception. So, if you are boycotting SecuROM games, be warned, otherwise:

RECOMMENDED!

Seriously jaw dropping game. Tons of fun and absolutely beautiful graphics. Overall the full game is a little on the short side but I feel that the Ultra-intense ride that it takes you on is more than worth it.
I really loved the original Far Cry and although Csysis is different and more futuristic it still has all of my favorite elements.
The maps and enviroments seem like they might be a tad bit smaller than those in Far Cry but they are still vast and allow you a certain amount of freedom to accomplish missions in different ways.
I can't wait for the addon 'Warheads".

awesome game but problems

obviously with graphics this beautiful there is going to be high system specs required. playing on a gaming pc no shooter compares except call of duty 4. it is a great game with great graphics. pretty much this game is perfect. there are however sdome issues. it took awhile patching it and stuff to get around cursor issues and game crashes. but a game this sweet deserves the time. this is a worthy game to spend your time on. go kill those commy north koreans, you wont regret it.

I am VERY disappointed by this game. I have a very high end gaming machine and I have problems running this at lowest settings. At higher settings it doesn't run at all. I'm running a dual core system with dual Nvidia graphics cards and this game sucks! If I could take the game back and get my money I would. Once again EA rips me off. I'll never buy another EA product.

great game even on 4 yr old computer!

I've been big fan of Far Cry and figured with all the talk of beefy system requirements for Crysis that my old XP /2.8/ 1gb/6600GT machine wouldn't be able to run it. I downloaded the demo and it worked fine, so I got it this weekend. Its a very cool game, granted much of the eye candy is on its lowest setting, but there is no issue with low FPS, totally playable. Even on the low settings the graphics are pretty impressive.

I'm just starting the game, but I recommend this game if you like First Person Shooters. Download the demo first if you're not sure you system will run it properly.

Absolutely fantastic game

I must have played this game all the way through at least eight times thus far, and IMO, it is one of the best games ever i have played, and i got tons of games including all the latest out today.
What strikes me as odd is all the naysayers who complain that the game has flaws. or they cannot run the game with thier highest end machines well enough. My rig has a AM2 5600 CPU, 2GB Crutial DR800 ram and only a 7600GT video card. Thats right.., and play it on medium settings with only a couple at lower settings, and it plays at pretty high framerates, in 90 percent of the game. I have no glitches of note , or at least not enough to bother compaining about. The game is the most gorgeous game i've played to date. COD 4 is good but diff. type graphics for those who want to compare this or that.
What I want ot tell those who have Nvidia graphics cards is, go into 3D settings and tweak the panel listings some and see if that helps. It sure did for me. Also, replay the game a few times and then make your assessments. each time for me it plays better and better, and seems to look sweeter to me. DO NOT apply any of the patches out. They are junk.

The more you play the more you love!

I waited a year for this game as well. After playing Far Cry, I couldn't wait for Crysis. At first I didn't like this game very much. I have a duo core 3.0 ghz; 2g ram; 8800 gtx in sli; Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty 5.1 Surround. A must-have to really enjoy this game. As I have played this game over the last six months I have gotten really good at operating the nano suit and weapons. Now I have to say that this game is the best shooter game I have EVER played! Call of Duty 4 is a extreme close second. I have all the EA Battlefield games as well as Tom Clancy series. After the patches and some tweaks in the game set up-I just love this game now! Trees falling down, buildings blowing up, blowing up vehicles and helicopters, and on and on. UNLIMITED ways to accomplish your missions in maps that a HUGH!

The physics and realism is unmatched. And sound effects are the best I've heard out of any game.

This game has cause people to love it or be dissapointed with it. Which ever camp you're in you have to accept that FPS gaming developers aren't going to let up. If you are a serious gamer your wallet better back it up!

Se ya on the Battlefield!

DVD Drive Issues

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 1 / 1

There seems to be an issue with my disk which causes my DVD drive to make horrendous clicking noises when the Crysis disk is inserted. Other disks do not cause this problem, and I exchanged my original disk for a new one that still causes the noise.

I've looked around online and this problem does not seem to be uncommon, nor does it seem to be limited to any one particular brand of DVD drive. The game still runs fine, but I've seen reports of people claiming that the disk broke their DVD drive, which makes me more than a little apprehensive every time I put the disk in.

Edit: After some research I discovered that the problem is that the SecuROM DRM that EA uses is incompatible with a lot of DVD drives. A lot of drive manufacturers have firmware updates though that will solve this. So if you're experiencing problems check your drive manufacturer's website for updates to your hardware. My review stays at 3 stars though, since this would not be a problem at all if EA wasn't so intent on locking down the content that their customers have legitimately purchased.

Also, I want to vent a little bit about the fact that their is no option to customize the controls if you're using a gamepad. I realize that there aren't many people that play this way, but since EA took the steps to enable gamepad support, it would not have been difficult at all to include customization option.

Excellent graphics and very challenging game play. The game sets your misions, but to a great extent it leaves how you accomplish the mission to your own ingenuity.
