Excellent Game ahead of its time

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

Crysis is so revolutionary that most people really can't fathom the power behind the Crytek engine.

Almost all the negative complaints are regarding computer problems or requirements. The game is also fairly short but in todays high graphic FPS shooters its actually relatively long. Crysis took me about 12 hours to beat and I go fairly fast, whereas COD4 took me 4 hours (what a ripoff!). But the beauty of Crysis is that it has a great replay value, ie. there are many different ways to approach each objective. The forests in high detail are amazing, this game has gone through painstaking detail which the average player would never even notice.
Other FPS don't even compare..

STOP WHINING ABOUT PC REQUIREMENTS!!!! Yes this game requires A LOT of pc. I have a Core 2 duo running stock with 2gb of ram with a Radeon 1950pro and I can run it at medium with some setting such as textures, shadows, water effects, and lighting on high with a framerate around 20fps. This game was designed to be long lasting into the future. I've seen this game run on a Quad Core with an 8800gts DX10 card on Vista64 on Very High and it can still barely handle it (15-20fps).

From a physics and graphics point of view, its the most amazing game to date. Every little leaf, rock, building, tree ect is rendered in the game to have realistic lighting, mass, physical properties and even air resistance! In fact the Crytek engine is so advanced that few computers can harness the full power. Most people who say its not impressive have only played on low or medium settings. Yes it is definitely not as impressive and a lot of graphical and physical features are turned off on these settings.

If your an FPS gamer, this game is almost as revolutionary as HL2.

To all the naysayers - play this game in a year on a PC with a DX10 video card on Vista64 on very high, there is no other game like it.

If you are new to FPS or you have a computer that is over a year old or a computer that is not optimized for gaming, you're probably going to be disappointed.

Beautiful graphics, but buggy with lackluster gameplay.

I was pretty excited about getting this game after reading the near-advertisement like review in PC Gamer magazine. I've got a speedy new gaming system and I thought this was the perfect game to christen it with.

The good:
The environment is gorgeous. The graphical immersion is second to none, with relatively dynamic interaction to boot. Trees and branches get mowed down like the mini-gun scene from "Predator". You can pick up random objects and toss them about, causing wanton damage to enemies and innocent wooden boxes alike. The suit powers are well balanced and don't turn you into a one man wrecking ball. You still need to be intelligent in your approach to achieving objectives.

The bad:
Where to start? The "open ended" aspect is relatively bogus as objective assignment is still linear and impassable canyon walls dispel the illusion of an ability to freely roam all parts of the island.
Weapons are problematic. Artificial range limitations seem to have been placed on weapons - I spent 90 useless rounds from my assualt rifle sniping away at a distant soldier who was going through the body language of being "hit", yet I was unable to take him down. Limit weapon range with real physics, not mysteriously disintegrating bullets. Even on normal difficulty, it can take 4 or more hits to take out a NK soldier. Headshots aren't even a surefire solution. It takes away the suspension of disbelief when your assualt rifle feels like a pea shooter. I would have much preferred a difficulty formula that heavily favored better "AI" (which, as far as I could tell, amounted to an enemy's disposition to take cover and jump on empty machine gun nests) and better enemy aim/reaction time.
I've discovered a lot of bugs. Things like enemy soldiers floating in the air after I've blown up their observation towers, invincible bad guys that require a restart of the game to fix, and enemies running around clutching invisible weapons.
The story line is a lot skimpier than it could be. Good sci-fi usually means a lot of imaginative bits creating a believable "universe"; this game falls somewhat short of that, relying on brief cutscenes with your next waypoint as a takeaway (isn't it time that optional story content be included in these games?). Character development...well, let's just say it's super hammy, with names like "Psycho" and "Jester" and a ridiculous caricature of a Marine Corps officer (having been a Marine myself, I get to pass judgement here).

I'll caveat this by saying I haven't completed the game yet (I'm slowly progressing, having to convince myself it's worth sitting down to play yet another level). I estimate I'm a little more than halfway through, so take that for what it's worth.

Oh, and I'll probably be cancelling my PC Gamer subscription... ;)

Crysis MP online experience is plagued by Hackers ruining the game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

I bought Crysis when it first came out and loved it. Hands down it has the best graphics and game experience of any game I have played in the last 20 years. And it works well on XP with Directx9 with settings turned down. It will be really unbelievable on directx 10 systems when one comes out that can handle the game on max settings.

However, just recently since Dec 20th 2007 I have joined many online MP games where one or several players are running hacks and cheats, which ruin the game for the rest of the honest players.

These hacks enable the cheaters to fly around, with unlimited super speed, unlimited ammo, they possess super aiming ability, and have super fast automatic firing of weapons (such as rockets) and they have the ability to spawn automatic nukes and spam numerous explosives to immediately kill all other players. A hacker can now end a MP game that used to take 1 hour or more to complete, in less than 5 minutes and ruin the experience for the other non-hacking gamers.

The server code is so weak that people running servers to host the MP games have no ability to boot these hackers or even identify the IP addresses to ban the offenders. All online games will now have to be passworded to prevent hackers from joining and ruining their game, until a patch is released that addresses the problem. This forces people to join clans and know who they are playing with, instead being able to just join a friendly honest game and have fun and meet new people. Some people now hosting games on dedicated servers have decided to bring down the server until the patch addresses this problem.

EA and the Crysis team have been slow to respond or even recognize this problem which will surely affect sales of its game, unless this problem is addressed by a patch. Many people are tired of the cheaters and have lost interest in the game due to the outrageous level of cheating which destroys the game experience for the other online players.

EA must continue to expend money to fix these hacks and cheats and other bugs promptly to support the game. It is amazing now how quickly these hackers destroy great games within a matter of days, after its release. It is too bad a fantastic game like this is destroyed by hackers and cheaters.

EA really needs to focus more time and energy into programming more secure online MP code into its games, if it wishes to maintain its cash flow and future sales growth of this game. Since this problem will hit EA right in their bank account, they just might take some action to cough up some cash to help the Crysis team correct the problem with a patch. Otherwise if this problem is ignored game's value is completely diminished. I will not buy farcry 2 (which I was looking forward to buying) if EA and the Crysis team shows me they are unwilling to expend the necessary expense and time to fix their games timely.

I don't mind if hackers play with other hackers in specific servers setup to host players that play using cheats and hacks. I even enjoyed seeing the effects of one hacker firing multiple nukes off for 5 minutes in one of the hacked games just to see the eye candy. But when the hackers invade the honest player games it ruins the game for all the other players. Most people just give up and leave the server.

So buyer beware. Maybe those of you waiting to buy this game should wait until a patch comes out, to send a strong message to EA and the Crysis team to fix the bugs and patch the holes hackers are using to exploit hacks and cheat in the game.

A good first person shooter game

This was also a christmas gift. The game has been played often and has been enjoyed. The graphics on the game are very good as long as you have the supporting graphics card.

Good but the VTOL sequence kills it

When I buy a first-person-shooter I want to play a first-person-shooter. Don't keep forcing me to drive vehicles. In this game as soon as you get into a vehicle you are a sitting duck. At least with the tanks and boats etc you can jump out at any time and go on foot. You have a choice. Not so with that massively annoying VTOL flying sequence. I found it impossible to steer that thing in 3-dimensions while as the same time trying to kill those alien things. I agree with the other reviewers who said the 1st half is good (like FarCry), but the 2nd half is boring. Especially the floating Alien world sequence that was just annoying. Which way is up, down, left, right, who knows. It felt like the game Descent.

Crysis - The new standard game benchmark

Crytek's success with Far Cry seems ages ago, but it seems that it will be known again with Crysis. This game is beefy, and you'll be playing it for days on end. Here's what I thought about the game:

PROS-

Excellent graphics - By far the best DX9 graphics I have ever seen in a game.
Storyline - I got wrapped up in the storyline quick, considering I spent most of my time surviving the Korean's onslaught.
Physics - While I was limited to DX9 only, you can still mow down trees no prob with a well placed grenade or MG fire.
Sound - Gunshot and voice echoes, grenade blasts, bullets hitting nearby plants, incredible. Voice actors are well done, not overperformed or lacking at all.

CONS-

Graphics - Absolutely murder's current gen systems. Even the 8800 Ultra buckles at 1280x1024 with 2xAA on Ultra settings.
Physics - You can walk over a dead body and it moves, but it doesn't respond to further gunfire or melee attacks? Even on high settings...
Performance - As stated before, only 8800 Ultra's in SLi, a QX9650, and 2Gb DDR3 will run this game at decent framerates anything above 1280x1024. High res? Forget it.
Aliasing - Pretty wicked aliasing, and sadly, you can't use AA or else performance tanks.

Overall, I love this game so far, but with a Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz, 4Gb DDR2-800 from Crucial, P35 mobo, and an X1900 can't even average 30 fps with no AA, medium-high, 1280x1024. It's kind of disappointing that the engine had to be built like this but hey, it's fun, you'll love it, so buy it, but beware that you NEED a high-end system to fully enjoy the game.

Wanted So Much More

Barely runs on my incredibly high end quad-core, sli, 8 gigs of mem, Vista Machine. I'm talking 19 frames at 1024 (and that is with the AA OFF?)
I wanted to love this game. I ended up trapped in a world of stupid AI, and graphics that need so much optimization that it isn't worth playing.
Crashtastic game.
You only see the high poly faces in Cinematic Moments.
It has pretty--but without playable pretty is a huge waste.
I'll go back to TimeShift on the PC. That is pretty and runs at 80 plus frames with everything on at 2560 resolution for me.

try and get this game to work in Vista, I dare you.
with 3gb memory, an 8800 GTS video card, and the game looks like Quake back in 1995... what the hell is going on ??? No patch, no support, no help.. go to hell if you think I'm recommending this turd to my friends. PUARFS!

Disappointing, don't believe the hype

I've always been more of a console gamer than a PC gamer, but with how hyped Crysis has been over the past year, gamers of all sorts (myself included) were eagerly anticipating it, considering the bombardment of beautiful trailers and gameplay clips that we've seen over all that time, and the fact that the game is developed by Crytek, the same team that brought us the excellent FPS Far Cry. Once you get Crysis fired up (hope you have a system and graphics card powerful enough to do it), you'll be amazed at how stunningly beautiful the environments and areas appear, even on a low resolution. The explosion effects are brilliant and the sound effects are wonderfully done as well, making Crysis one of most visually pleasing FPS' to come out in quite some time. Where Crysis derails though is thanks to the assortment of bugs and glitches that are apparent throughout the game. These range from physics glitches to mission bugs where you are wandering around wondering just what to do. It should also be noted that the supposed "advanced AI" in the game is practically non-existant, as you'll notice enemies doing things not so intelligent in the heat of battle, at least when it comes to the human enemies in the game. These range from shooting in the opposite direction of you to not shooting at all. However, there are moments in the game where you will be left with your jaw hanging open, including some battles with massive alien adversaries that are done exquisitely well, but these moments happen nowhere near as often as advertised. Crysis isn't a bad game one bit, and for FPS fans seeking a new shooter or for those who have been marginally interested in the game since it's announcement, it is definitely worth checking out. Keeping that in mind, don't expect the next great shooter, or nothing close to what Crysis has been hyped as being.

Long awaited and a disappointment...

I usually don't bother to write reviews, but this game was too disappointing to let go.

I'll keep this short: graphics are very good. I loved Far Cry, and the first half of Crysis was indeed Far Cry with more eye candy.

Pros: Great Graphics - texture features, explosions, etc. Also: no Steam-esqe account joining or on-line activation! Just load and play. Keep it that way: game developers!

Cons: Many -- bugs here and there, including the big one that stopped the game for good -- shooting the 'big boss' on the carrier -- gun would not 'target'. 'Had to quit...I'm assuming that was the end :-(

WORSE: story line was DULL! Shooting thingies that looked like those in Matrix over and over again got downright boring. Far Cry was immersive and compelling -- with so many interesting and even 'scary' chapters... and gameplay that lasted seemingly days. Crysis does not deliver in those ways. AI was bland and fairly unintelligent.

Again, this is a short review. Perhaps I'm getting too old for PC games -- but compared with Half Life, Unreal 2, and even the earlier Dooms 1 & 2 all of which I found 'compelling' and creative, Crysis falls short... almost flat. -s
