Crytek HITS ANOTHER HOMERUN

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 0 / 0

FAR CRY was one of the best FPS games ever sold. It created such a following that can only be compared to that of UNREAL and the original HALF-LIFE. CRYTEK, the developer of both FAR CRY and CRYSIS, clearly did not rest on its laurels. CRYSIS is an *EVEN BETTER GAME* in many aspects.
And topping FAR CRY is NOT an easy task...

Graphically the game is GORGEOUS! (Both DX10 and DX9 compatible). Moving in the jungle is just unbelievable: the natural foliage, the game of light and shadow, the clear flowing water...The weapons are exceptionally well designed (familiar shapes but mostly futuristic) and their muzzle flashes add to the game realism. Replenishing your ammo is almost never a problem, provided you are frugal with your sniper bullets. A nice cross-genre touch: most weapons are enhanceable with targeting-lasers, sniper-sights and silencers.
The "weapon" you will enjoy more is, of course, the nanite-muscle-suit, a kind of augmenting exoskeleton that serves as both armor and turning you into a super-human. Throwing your enemies over the tree tops can be really fun - and their limp movements and shouted insults are totally realistic! Speaking of realism, wait to reach the zero-gravity levels: the weapons' kick will propel you backwards - as it should!
And, importantly, CRYSIS is much more graphically stable than, say, FEAR-PERSEUS MANDATE or BIOSHOCK, although graphically clearly superior.

The sound has also been well worked on. There are a number of moments where sound clues are the warning you will get. The sound of an enemy crawling towards you is not a good omen...So get rid of those old headphones and plug in a good set of speakers.

The levels are beautifully designed and the AI PHENOMENAL! I had a group of enemies flank me as I was engaged with their comrade who was left as bait! Shoot an enemy from cover only to watch him seek cover as well - until he or one of his comrades spot your position!
Overall, the gameplay controls is very similar to that of FAR CRY (and most FPS nowadays). I do have to point out that movement is precise and effective. Running is fast whereas crouching is stealthy. For longer distances, vehicles become available.
The game also sports a multiplayer - although it may require seriously lowering the video specs to avoid lagging.

That is the main problem with CRYSIS: it is excessively demanding in hardware! Short of an expensive uber-computer one will not experience the full potential of the game without glitches. When VALVE can do miracles even with 2004 computers, this is poor workmanship, and it cost them a star.

Now, this game (being an EA release) sports ...SecuROM. Usually I subtract at least two stars from games burdening us with such dangerous security routines. However, I liked the game so much I felt torn - and decided to make a more generous exception. So, if you are boycotting SecuROM games, be warned, otherwise:

RECOMMENDED!

I started playing "video games" in '89. This is the best "shooter" yet. I don't like fighting Aliens but the war in the jungle against the North Koreans is breathtaking. Expect some gliches use only top notched equipment and be prepared to sell off your old games on e-bay.

Good, but not THAT good.

Yeah it's pretty to look at. But for an engine requiring SkyNet it's not THAT pretty.

The ragdoll physics are horrible and the A.I. is not impressive. The enemy hit points are beyond grotesque; an enemy with no armor can easily take an entire clip to the chest and stand up and start firing back.

What's "new" about this game, though I don't think anything is, is the nano-suit. But ask yourself this: You have a weapon and are looking at an enemy you wanna kill. You have multiple ways of engaging thanks to nano-suit. What do you do? You fire the weapon. I bet you don't pick "maximum strength" jump onto the roof, bang through it, land behind the enemy and switch to "maximum armor" pick the weapon and fire it. You have options that don't add gameplay because they are, simply, unnecessary.

The variety is extremely poor; one type of Korean soldier and the same jeep over, over and over again. They probably spent 12.216 man-hours designing a rock in this game but it shows; there is absolutely no variety.

The story of the game? Just like the rest of them.

good gameplay, great graphics

If you're thinking about buying this item, you obviously know that has the best graphics of any game to date. But the gameplay is fun as well, and some of the later levels with the aliens are pretty sweet too. Play the demo, the first half of the game is very similar to that.

Preformance:

I run this game at high on everything except objects quality (which i scale back to medium) and 2x anti-aliasing, at 1280x1024 (SXGA) resolution. Getting 30-44 fps average in non combat, and 6-20 fps in combat.

Rig:
3.2 GHz Pentium 4 with hyperthreading
XFX Nvidia 8800 GT alpha dog edition (not the xxx variant)
... and, well, that's all that you really need to know for your performance benchmarks.

Simply Awesome

This is a great game overall. The graphics and audio makes the game.
One hang up, after you are into the game 3/4 of the way, the load/save times become unbearable. I'm talking 10-20 minutes to load/save a game. I'm still waiting for a PC game to come out without hang-ups and need for patches. People pay a lot of money for these games and should be hassle free out of the box.
Hopefully a patch will be out soon and I can finish this awesome game!

Great Game Story not so much

Anyway Crysis is an amazing game instead of COD4's strict linearity you get moreless the exact opposite. You can play this game anyway you want if you wanted to you could get through a large amount of the game with little or no combat. The only bad part is after you discover the aliens and then it plays like COD4 not a bad thing but after playing Crysis for 5, 6 hours its kinda deppressing. And remember there is a demo so I say try it see if you like the gameplay and its also a great way to see if your computer can run it. Oh and the story is pretty much the PC's equal to Halo series on the console its really really bad. But it gets you to more Korean killing action the important part of the game.

Outstanding

I played this with my Alienware PC and it was outstanding. The graphics are the best I've seen. Smooth gameplay. Already wish there was a sequel.
Running AMD dual core 5600+ Nvidia 8800 GT.

Not all it was cracked up to be

Whilst it held my interest all the way through and was fun to play, it had several drawbacks. Installation was too fiddly, as I had to tune the game to optimise it for my system - even though it is a fairly high-end rig. This led to sub-optimal settings, which made the system not as good as the graphics on Far Cry and certainly far slower. This leads on to the next point; it was Far Cry with a different slant (eg invisibility, which made it too easy), which also led to my general feeling of "it was OK". I hope Far Cry 2 will address these things and return the 'wow' factor I got with Far Cry.

Great game, but a few annoying flaws

Crysis is an amazing game, well worth the money, but has a few annoying, near-fatal flaws. First up, the hardware issues. I have a 8800 GTS with nForce something-or-other motherboard (pretty new) and a Intel quad-core CPU (not Extreme), and I can run semi-stably on medium, becoming choppy on some parts. I'd really like to experience the best of it's graphics, but I hardly have the budget. Second, the story was blah and crapped out at times, also too short. The ending was too much of a Halo 2. Third, the multiplayer was absolutely horrible. It is still a great game, and hopefully the multiplayer issues can be fixed.

The more you play the more you love!

I waited a year for this game as well. After playing Far Cry, I couldn't wait for Crysis. At first I didn't like this game very much. I have a duo core 3.0 ghz; 2g ram; 8800 gtx in sli; Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty 5.1 Surround. A must-have to really enjoy this game. As I have played this game over the last six months I have gotten really good at operating the nano suit and weapons. Now I have to say that this game is the best shooter game I have EVER played! Call of Duty 4 is a extreme close second. I have all the EA Battlefield games as well as Tom Clancy series. After the patches and some tweaks in the game set up-I just love this game now! Trees falling down, buildings blowing up, blowing up vehicles and helicopters, and on and on. UNLIMITED ways to accomplish your missions in maps that a HUGH!

The physics and realism is unmatched. And sound effects are the best I've heard out of any game.

This game has cause people to love it or be dissapointed with it. Which ever camp you're in you have to accept that FPS gaming developers aren't going to let up. If you are a serious gamer your wallet better back it up!

Se ya on the Battlefield!
