Hyped

Not too sure what all the hype about this game is. The Ghost Recon games are 10 times better, both single & multiplayer.

The single player mode on this game is decent. The multiplayer online mode is confusing, and difficult. The viewpoint is too distant, making opponents look like tiny dots on the screen if you are at a higher vantage point.

You also can't really tell who is the enemy, or your own player. It is not defined as well as Halo 3 or Ghost Recon.

Bottom line--Save your money. This game is way overhyped.

Ridiculously Short - Rent it and save yourself the 60 bucks

No game should only require 5 hours to finish. Despite the great graphics and incredible gameplay, this game was disappointing. Save yourself the money and rent it. You'll finish it in a weekend. After all the hype and leadup to this coming out I am very very very let down.

Wonderfully Short

COD 4 delivers on graphics, sounds and overblown machismo, but the game is just too damn short. You could win it in one day, so it's not worth the money. I bought COD4 because I loved the series. I was impatient. I could've waited a bit for the price to drop, which is usually what I do because no game is worth $65 unless it guarantees several solid months of gameplay. Videogames are getting shorter and shallower while the price increases and satisfaction decreases. Designers now emphasize the multi-player campaign, which requires just a few maps and letting players kill each other, over the single-person. I dislike buying Xbox 360 games now because I don't get good value for my money. The younger generation doesn't understand that a ten-hour game is a rip. And ignore those "best game ever" reviews - it is not. The game is primitive. The campaign is painfully linear and no matter how many times you play it, the enemy always comes from the same direction, saying the same things. Designers need to change this and offer multiple paths. They could at least have a map randomizer or enemy randomizer that stirs up things a bit.

Worth the Hype

This game is the real thing. It is similar enough to older shooters that you don't have to re-learn a whole new system, but it is different enough to really be fresh. With the ability to customize your players with every game, you can choose the weapons that will be useful on that map, as well as use the weapons you are most comfortable with.

The gameplay is second to none. One of the coolest features is the ability to look at the way you were killed by your enemy on XBOX Live. It helps you learn new tactics and shows you that you really didn't have him in your sights!

As for the debate between CoD4 and Halo 3, I personally think it isn't even close. Halo 3 is the same old same old, with a few new wrinkles. It is one of the greatest games ever, but it is still living off of the old innovations of the original. CoD4 is fresh. It feels like a completely new experience and the graphics are incredible. All you have to do is play the first level on single-player to know that this is not the same old shooter.

One last thought. The single-player game is emotionally charged. The story is engrossing and real and the combat situations are not completely linear. Several times I was locked in combat in an alley, expecting all enemies to come from in front of me, only to get ambushed from behind, the side, or on top of a near-by building. This puts you in a constant state of tension, expecting death to come from anywhere. It doesn't take a genius to realize that this is what a real combat situation must feel like.

I could write about this game for several pages. But suffice it to say that this is the type of game that only comes along once in a great while. If you like shooters at all, you must have this one.

The best military shooter on XBox 360 to date!

I love playing shooters, but I have only fallen in love with a few in my time: N64's "Golden Eye", PSOne's "Medal of Honor", XBox's first "HALO" and "Star Wars: Battlefront II". Now the shooter genre has come closer to campaign perfection than ever before with Call of Duty 4!

I'm one of the rare people who don't play online, so I can't comment, but I can tell you that the campaign has got my heart pumping like not too many games have, period. The graphics, mechanics, sound, controls are all superb. The story is excellent for a shooter, the plot twists are shocking and will leave you momentarialy stunned.

Think about all of the more recently stagged realistic warfare shooters that you played and thought to yourself I liked some things the game did but most of it fell short(i.e.:Blackhawk Down, America's Army, First-to-Fight, and BLACK to name a few). Now take ALL of the expectations you have for the shooter genre, play COD4 and prepare to be throughly satisfied shooting and fragging in the best shooter to date on the Xbox 360. Best $60 bucks I ever spent. Let the credits play through for an awesome hijacked aircraft-in-flight terrorist take down level!

Excellent Attention to Detail + Superb Multiplayer

Graphics: In the graphics department you are probably looking at THE definitive next-gen gaming experience. Textures are not overused, smoke/explosion/bullet effects add great visual atmosphere to the game, and you really do feel as though you are in a war zone. The visuals are no less than stunning in Single Player mode, and multiplayer achieves high marks as well.

Attention to Detail: I give this its own category because the attention to detail is almost unsurpassed in any game I've ever played since the 80s. The exhaust fumes from the back of a tank, the chatter on the radio, the between mission stats of particular military equipment, the Judgment Day-esque atmosphere post nuclear explosion... all of it keeps you firmly grounded in the story.

Story: The story seems like something Tom Clancy would write. The sad thing is, all of the things that happen in the game take place over a 4-5 day period, switching between the view of U.S. Marines and British S.A.S. This is unsettling because you see how much chaos and destruction can be wrought over such a short period. Some gameplay sequences are merely story devices, as you play as a character whose sole purpose in a mission is to be executed, or to crawl out and die after being horrifically wounded. I've also had reports from friends who have played the game who had certain sequences turn out differently, and the story is somewhat dynamic based on choices you make in the game.

Sound: All of the sound effects are great, though mostly you hear gunfire - the dialogue is excellent. Each character has his own personality, and you feel almost sad when something happens to one of them. The music really sets the tone of each mission/sub-mission as you can kind of gather what will happen based on the musical cues.

Gameplay: Think of the other Call of Duty games. Remove redundant controls, and some new options.

Multiplay: You are really missing out if you do not have Live enabled with this game. The sheer awesomeness of being able to fire through walls, be wounded and fire from the ground at your attacker, or having a helicopter machine gun the enemy team during a multiplayer match is something I haven't found in any other game. You level up after each match, unlocking new weapons, "traits" (abilities for your class), and "Create a Class" options where you can create your own classes. Also, unlock challenges to perform certain feats with a weapon to unlock special attachments for that weapon. For instance, 25 head shots might unlock a silencer, or a better attachment for steady aiming.

My current class is the 'stereotypical AK-wielding maniac' who runs around with an AK47, pistol, and an RPG strapped to his back. You can focus more on a special forces type role, general assault, or sniper, or any combination.

The radar works differently than most MP games. Radar blips only show people who have fired a weapon, and silencing your weapon prevents you from showing up on radar, though it lowers your impact rating with bullets.

Firing a weapon, then backing away and hiding while waiting for someone to investigate the gunshot is a valid strategy.

I would be willing to say that this beats out Halo 3, and with the multiplayer aspect beats out Bioshock for FPS of the year... I can't imagine anything being better in the current crop of releases.

While the single player is short, but very solid--the multiplayer just keeps on giving. Overall, this game is very balanced and just a lot of fun to play.

This game is amazing and addicting. I'd imagine this is how a heroine addict feels. If you don't have time to play games don't buy COD4, all you're going to want to do is play
