Return to Castle Wolfenstein = Return to Greatness

Finally, a game worth the [money] plus the ridiculous
California state tax. It seems that nowadays, the more
hype the video game gets, the more it comes up short. I
haven't seen any advertisement for this product. I just
remember when it came out for the PC and it was fun
and addictive. Well, the saga continues.

I've played through the first four levels with little
gripes. I love that you can save anywhere. Every
shooter game should have this feature. The graphics
are excellent as well as the control setup; didn't
have to change it at all as it is similiar to most
other shooter games I own. I only wish the enemy spoke
German instead of American in a German accent like
in the Medal of Honor series. If the rest of the game
plays similar to the first four levels, this game is a
gem. Buy it if you like shooter games. Never, ever,
buy No One Lives Forever. That game will always [stink]!

Well Done!

This is a very well done game. However, if you were a fan of the original Castle Wolfenstein games, you may not be expecting what this game really is.

First, this game plays almost identically to Medal Of Honor, Red Faction and the like. Except, with this game there are less enemies and you actually have to peek around corners and USE YOUR BRAIN to get through the levels.

The game also offers the ability to upgrade your character by using a point system. For example, you can boost your health and other options are available. Finding hidden treasures and secret areas produce more points.

Just like Medal Of Honor Rising Sun, if you are looking for a melee type mass destuction game, this may not be the title for you. If you are looking for thousands of alien mutants to blow up while they stand still for you, buy another game!

While you can always sneak up on your enemies and kill them from behind with a knife, there are plenty of weapons to keep you happy!

I enjoyed the sniper rifle and the ability to use binoculars to see what I was running into before I ran into it!

Here's how I would rate the game:

Graphics 7/10
Sound 7/10
Gameplay 10/10
Replay Value 10/10
Quality 10/10

Overall, I think I would give this 9/10.

A solid game, good levels, good selection of weapons, I think it is Well Done!

Incredible WW II based game

I originally chose not to pick up this game because I figured it was more horror/scifi based than shooter. I was absolutely wrong. This game is great if you like shooter type games especially the Medal of Honor series.
Your mission is to infultrate Castle Wolfenstein and stop the Nazis from unleashing their paranormal plans and win WW II.
Graphically the game is very good, not awesome, but pretty good.
The best part of the game is that counting each part of every mission, there are approximately 39 missions to do. Most missions are just straight shooter with objectives to accomplish, and secrets that you're able to discover in order to get points to upgrade your amount of health or ammunition at the end of each mission. A few of the missions however, you must complete in as much silence and stealth as possible. So, fans of games like Splinter Cell will also find things they like about this game.
The weapons you're given range from real life machine guns, shotguns, flamethrowers and handguns to fictional weapons. The AI is decently intelligent, they don't just stand there and let you kill them if they see you or you miss while trying to take them out from behind.
The controls are also great. They're like most shooter games like SOCOM II and are easy to learn and remember. The only drawback to the controls is that there's no option to go prone to avoid getting shot at and you can't jump and hang on a ledge or do things like rappel.
The blood and gore are very realistic, so as its raiting would suggest, this isn't for little kids or the squemish.
One other drawback to this game is the fact that it's linear. There's only one way to go in order to complete a mission, you can't simply go around enemies, you have to get past them.
Overall, this game is a lot of fun if you like shooting up Nazis and like some science fiction.

Good game

RTCW is a good game. The graphics are amazing and are the best part of the game. Another plus is that there is actually blood unlike the medal of honor series. You also get to save anywhere and that is a must in a game like this.

There are some downsides however. There are certain enemys that have shields. If you try to shoot them when they are crouched and hit their sheild, they will reflect and hit you (that is not the bad part). The bad part is that if you have a sniper rifle and u put it on their leg it will still reflect which is stupid. Also, I have gotten stuck about fifteen times so far and i'm only on like the 6th level. The lighting is also bad. I put the brightness to the maximun level and I still can't friggen see! Because of that, i can only play at night.

If your a fan of Doom, Quake or the Medal of Honor Series, then this game is for you. It is basically the same thing as the PC version which i respect because thats hard to make on a PS2.

The only thing worse then a Nazi is a un-dead zombie Nazi

I was never really interested in the Wolfenstein series so I could give less if it came out for PS2-- or at least I thought. I was in a local [store] and no good game in sight. I happened to see Wolfenstein on the top shelf and against my better judgment I bought it. When I first popped it into my PS2, I was disappointed. The graphics were not super and the game play seemed dull. After about an hour I found myself liking it. Why? Because this is one of the few first- person shooters out where the only point is to shoot and kill; no difficult puzzles or complex stories just simple fun violent shooting. Don't get me wrong it wasn't the best game I've played, but non-the less it was fun. The whole point of the game is you have to stop the Nazis from raising the dead and bringing all kinds of hell upon the world. Do no fear; you will have an arsenal of 16 weapons at your disposal, like a combat knife, a Colt.45, an MP40, an M1S Snooper (sniper rifle) and the experimental Tesla. Besides fighting Nazi soldiers you will also fight zombies and X creatures. Zombies are pretty easy to kill but X creatures can take a lot of punishment, so take them out with a flamethrower or a heavy machine gun. The game will expand across 6 environments from the pyramids of Egypt to Castle Wolfenstine itself. Each level has secret areas and treasures that you can collect. If you collect enough of them you will be able to upgrade you health, armor and many other things. The graphics are the only real flaw with Wolfenstein; they don't really interfere with the game but they are not perfect and they remind you that you are playing from your living room. Return To Castle Wolfenstein is an average first person- shooter. Although it may not be the best game out there, it will entertain you for hours so if you ever have a spare [item price] buy this game.

Solid shooter for the PS2 gets the job done

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a thoroughly enjoyable first person shooter that falls between Medal of Honor and Resident Evil.

I loved MoH Frontline, so I was looking for more WW II first person shooter action. I was afraid the game would wallow in the occult element and resemble something like Resident Evil too much, but to my pleasant surprise, it did not.

This is a solid game all around. The shoot em up action is great, and the AI isn't bad at all as compared with some other games (particularly the newest Medal of Honor).

Also, unlike Medal of Honor, there are tons of secrets in this game--countless hidden areas where you get bonuses that enable you to up your health, or ammo, for instance. So it pays to play carefully and always look around for extra things to smash.

It also carries a Mature rating, unlike the MoH series of the similar EA Bond shooters. It's not the goriest, but it's certainly welcome. There are plenty of authentic weapons, including the ubiquitous Thompson sub machine gun, the 1911 .45, the bazooka, sniper rifles, etc, etc. There's even a Sten silenced sub machine gun that realistically overheats when fired too much.

Much more so than the MoH games this game creates a lot of tension as you battle Nazis, German soldiers, and the undead and recently mutated. You'll find yourself reloading just to time to kill a skeleton that comes back to life after several shots. You'll cover yourself with grenades as you cycle through weapons and try to reserve ammo.

I found this game pleasantly challenging but not too tough. The ending, truth be told, was rather easy for a game of this type, but I thoroughly enjoyed it all the way through. I would rank the 1 Player Mode as superior to Medal of Honor Rising Sun for a few reasons: it's tougher, it's bloody, it has more variety, and it's longer.

Downside? No multiplayers mode--a real shame. Couple of cheesy bits, including the boot to the head capability and the jerky knife fighting, but these are very minor.

This is definitely a recommended shooter for the PS2. Combining WWII action and zombie action, it gets the job done.

Real Good

Hey, I remember when this game was on the Apple but I bought the PS2 recently because I gotta lot more FREE TIME in my life now. So, immediately I was blown away. To be brief I was entertained from beginning to end with this game. It's not easy, which I liked a lot, and I still play levels I have saved on the card.

OK, why write a review. BECAUSE it was the 1st game I bought for the PS2, and played for that matter and I was ALL EXCITED because I thought "Hey, all the other PS2 games must be at least as cool as this". I was wrong and I hate being wrong. Who are you people who think So Com II is so great? I would rather OD on cough syrup than play that pansy game. I had more fun shooting my team mates than listening to their annoying remarks. Kids, mowing the front yard is more fun than So Com II.

Wolfenstein has left me searching for other quality games and I have come up short. I have yet to try many of the 1st person shooters, but after all the hub bub over SO COMII, I'm worried about the quality of food I buy at the super market, the integrity of our citizens and the things that pretty girls say.

Sincerely,

OLE SCHOOL

A much needed game for the ps2

I have always been a huge fan of first person shooter games,so Wolfenstein was an instant hit for me.With the exception of "No One Lives Forever","Half-Life" and "OO7:Agent Under Fire",there are sadly no other games like this available for the ps2.

Although I've only played through the first three levels,I'm really impressed.This has all the fun you would come to expect in a first person title.I'm also happy to say that Activison did a good job on making the cross hairs on the game accurate;
one hit headshot kills are very possible to make. There are also stealth kills available,by sneaking behind a nazi and making a throat slash with your combat knife.A great feature is the fact that there are hidden treasures in each level that,if found, reward you with points. These points can be exchanged for a bigger
health meter, more durable armor etc.And of course there is also diffrent difficulty settings to choose from in the begining.

I've not played the PC or Xbox versions of the game,so I can't compare. But I thought that the ps2 version had both great graphics and smooth frame rate quality. The few load times are also pretty quick,so no worries there. The only minor complaint I
have is that it would have been nice to hear the nazis shout in german;or if nothing else at least give them more convincing accents.Still though, anyone who enjoys first person shooters should love this game.

This game is lots of fun. I got what I expected. A sequel to the old Wolfenstein 3D game. There's lots of guys to shoot and later on in the game there's some monsters. The weapons are cool and not too futuristic except for the lightning gun. All in all its a good game.

History Resurrected For Playstation

I'll try not to bore anyone with the history of the Wolfenstein franchise, mostly because this new edition of "Saving Private Blazkowicz" is so different from the old Doom-style game that spawned it. Just assume that the name itself is synonymous with "Every TRUE GAMER must play this", especially now that it is finally available for the PS2.
Up to this time, the MEDAL OF HONOR has been the closest Playstation series to compare to this game, but WOLFENSTEIN has a few advantages over it:
I must warn you that almost every button on the controller is used, but if you have played MEDAL OF HONOR already, you will get used to it. The best thing is, you can customize your controller as you play, just like a PC game. You can also save at any point in the level. The interactive environments, door kicks, and stealth kills also bring this game up a notch. I initially give it 4 stars, but this title deserves 5 stars if it can continue the drama of MOH, and still carry the gore of BLOODRAYNE, and F. Paul Wilson's supernatural horror novels.
Finally, the Blazkowics from the past returns, and only "true gamers" with a PS2 will be high-stepping into BJ's boots for a while.
