The Onimusha series, I've come to realise, is what Capcom uses as Market Fodder. It's a series of totally unoriginal games with uninventive gameplay and predictable twists and turns, but for all of that, Capcom have still managed to make it a best-seller, thanks to a hefty dose of irony, beautiful graphics and an all-round sense of fun.

Onimusha 2 doesn't do anything that the first one didn't do, so if it bored you then steer clear of the sequel. However, for fans of the original, or for those of you wanting to try the hack-em-up genre out. you really can;t do any better than Onimusha 2. The story follows that of Jubei, a warrior lord on a quest for vengeance against the army of demons who destroyed his home and family. Aided in his quest by a host of sometimes-playable secondary characters, he hacks n' slashes his merry way through hordes of colourful demons and tremendous end-bosses.

So far, so ordinary.

Where Onimusha 2 excels is in two very important areas, Graphics and Playability. Capcom have taken a very unoriginal game engine and given its players some absolutely gorgeous visuals to go with it - the reasoning behind this being, I believe, that the genre has its fans already, so they may as well have a visual treat while they're playing. Animation is fluid, the characters are big, detailed and colourful, and the backdrops for this HUGE game are lush and easily identifiable. Playability, too, is fast, easy and lots of fun. There are puzzles (unfairly hard, considering the game's relative simplicity) but you don't have to complete them in order to progress through the game. The game is very fluid and all the better for it.

However, in this market of innovative and affecting adventure games, Onimusha 2 languishes in mediocrity. What it does, it does excellently well, but it could have been a true classic if it had done something original. Beautiful graphics, smooth fast gameplay... and little else. Still, if you're a fan of the genre, you can;t go wrong with this.

Very fun game with some nice pre rendered backrounds. The plot is OK. The voice acting is awful. Still the gameplay is similar to the first. The levels rock. It is longer than the first taking about 11 hours to beat.

I really loved the first Onimusha (I beat it 6 times :P) And I thought this was a great seguel. I recommend this game to anyone who likes survival horror, action games, samurai games, or anyone who would like to play a fun game with a great story. Thoroughly recommended.

Great game

I rented this game over the holiday weekend and have decided to buy it. It's really fun taking out all the baddies. I love it when Jubei, the main character, stabs the demons as they are lying on the ground and then has to step on the bodies to pull his sword out. I read the review about the way the characters are acting and I have one thing to say about that (think Anime). I think its funny and also come on buddy, its just a game. I'm not going to go into the story because that has already been said all I can is the graphics are some of the best I have ever seen on a console game. The acting is like Anime, the story reminds me of the Anme movie "Ninja Scrolls" and is really a very deep story line. I'm a er... mature, yeah that's it, mature game player and some of the baddies are a little tough for me. The thing I liked was when I died 3 times in a row the game comes back and says that you now have the option of playing the game in easy mode, which of course I do. When this happens you comeback to life with a few herbs, medicine and some ancient medicine. They also give you a talisman that will give you 1 resurecction, I thought that was cool.
I'm not sure on how long the game play is because I normally play for a while until I get tired, or can't get passed a certain obsticle, then return a different day. But the level of play is deep and the music is great and follows along with the story really well. I do agree with some other reviews about the controls. They didn't make them very friendly and they don't give you the option to change them. But after a while I started getting use to them. The monsters are cool and remind me of something you would encounter in the D&D world. Its a bit graphic, blood going all over when you hack and slash, but nothing that will gross you out. One thing I didn't like is if you miss a step in the story you can create a big mess and end up fighting a main bad guy by yourself instead of having one of your buddies helping you.
All in all its a fun game with PC quality graphics. Give it a try.

this game has the best graphics i have ever seen!!! the gameplay is perfect. its challenging, fun and exciting all at once. you'll be hooked the second you start playing. there are cool special features after you beat the game, but i won't spoil it for you. the downfall to this game is that you have to give gifts to get involved with the other 4 charactes, and if you don't you miss out on a lot of items and completion points. but the dialogue more than makes up for it, its realy very compelling and quite humorous, its also the most fun i've had on the PS2 so check it out.

Just two words that describe this game, absolutely sick. It's so much fun to play and I think this is easily one of my favorite new games to play. My favorite character in the whole game is of course Kotaro Fuma, that adorable ninja boy that Jubei meets in Imasho. This is such a great video game, the scenery (in Imasho alone) is gorgeous!

After playing the first one and really liking it, this takes place in the same exact place with very little difference.Buy the first one for 19.99 and save some money because it's the same thing

When I started playing this game I could not put it down. It's graphics and gameplay are unbeleivable. this is a definite must-play! It has a multiple variattion storyline. meaning what you do during the game affects the plot. If you love an awsome experince then go buy this game.

THis is a pretty good game. Other than the controls taking some getting used to - the storyline, graphics, weapons and scenery is pretty solid...

I got this game after I rented it. When I got it a few days later I went out and bought the stratigy guide. When I looked at it I was disapointed because when I rented it I only had it for 3 days,when I looked at the stratigy guide I figured out I was almost done with it. I still had alot of fun playing it though. If you like games like The Thing ull like this because it has a great deal of gore. All together it was fun and short.
