This is a rewrite of a previous review. I have now completed the game and have raised the score to 4 stars from 3. Here's why;

The sense of dread one receives when playing "Manhunt" is undeniable. The scenes are dark, the music is chilling and the blood flows freely as Rockstar leaves no stone unturned in the gore genre with this release.

James Earl Cash is saved from execution only to be turned into director Starkweather's (the snuff movie master) stalking, muderous puppet. As Cash is launched from death row into a society at its lowest rife with senseless murders, snuff movies, corruption, racisim and just plain waaaaay over the top violence.

I really enjoyed Manhunt, though it could have been equally effective without Rockstar's insatiable desire for bloodlust. There really hasn't been a game like it (conceptually at least) as far as I am aware. The stealth aspects of sneaking up behind and 'snuffing' unsuspecting 'hunters' are really neat and extremely well done. Some of the snuff scenes are so violent, they will flat out make you squirm.

Turns out Manhunt is much more of a story than a mindless, murderous rampage. The other reviewers reveal most of the plot, but lets just say you start out senselessly killing people at the direction of Starkweather. Not really sure why you're doing it, but you've been saved from certain death only to end up fighting for your life in the seediest sections of Carcer City. The plot slowly forms until you realize your a pawn in a huge 'snuff movie ring.'

Hopefully you can get over the senselessly violent stuff, but it is an essential part of the story. The plot is great stuff and what I've come to expect from Rockstar. Wait until you fight 'Piggsy', talk about a nightmare.

Definitely worth the [] bucks. Weeks of entertainment, challenge and unmatched gore.

i bought the game the other day after a long tine from my wife suggesting that i would like the game due to the fact that i am a big fan of the gta series as well as max payne.
to me i love this game you have to use your brains to get through the levels and to stay alive.
the basic concept is that you are a man that is being hunted by hired killers all the while you are being video taped.
great feel as well as great enviroments also love the idea how you are blind to the hunters untill the hunters start talking or whistling etc. in which show where the hunters are.
i would tell people to go out and buy this the other thing i do want to mention is that rockstar games have the guts to go out and produce games as in gta series as well as this game that is nothing but pure fun if it wasnt for people like rockstar i would say we would be playing nothing but ahem pg rated games.
anyway the con to the game is the controls and sometimes the approach when you try to finish a hunter off is sometimes a pain.
i love the concept of the game great imagination went into this.
also love the finishing off shots you cant get more real than that.
you also have a variety of weapons to use as well as a variety of non weapons to use to bring the hunters close to you so u can jump the hunters and finish them off.
if you are into mature games and like max payne or like the gta series then this game is right up your alley.
there are alot of hiding spots to use as well as enviroment objects to use as well.
this is a five star game and well worth the time to play if you had a bad day at work etc. well this is the game for you to releive stress i tell ya.

For starters this game is not by any means recomendable for people below the age of 20 years old. this game is very violent, and even though the violence is never glamorised, it is a very cruel game. now, the main point i wanted to make in this short review, is how rockstar in my case, made a point with the violence. when you kill someone, the first time, you feel ok, it was nice to kill that person, but then the director speaks to you through your earpice, and congratulates you, and by the time you have killed several people, he starts talking to you more, and speaking to you just before you kill the person, saying things like "Come on Cash, nice and slow" and after a while, at least in my case, you began to regret killing the people that you are about to kill. it is a very effective way in making the audience hate killing the people they are meant to kill.

Interesting game, not worth more than $10

Manhunt is a very strange game. Gruesome yes! Blood and violence to the highest level. The great graphics will put you into the game itself. Rockstar have made some great games, however I believe they had something with Manhaunt and I strongly believe they did not use this theme to the fullest.
The first Hour of game play you will be electirfied by the exicitement. But honestly, over time the fun factor goes down. Repetition comes alive and the game will become boring. Regardless what level you make it, same old things. Remember Twisted Metal Black? It's fun but over time it gets boring, Manhunt is the same, maybe if Manhunt was mulitplayer than it will be a all time favorite

fun game

there is like 153 reviews if this game, i didn't bother to read morethan 5 or 6, but in my experience it is a great game. The story is nice, and the graphics are cool.
Perhaps it is kinda slow in the beginning, but it gets real nice once you start using firearms. Nothing better then shotting one of those sick evil characters in the noodle and putting there good for nothing lives to an end.
Pigsy, is also quite in interesting character, too bad that not much of his story is revealed. He dies a very nice death and it is fun killing the poor mutant.
Nice game, yóu will like it if you enjoy games with a lot of fire power, just be patient in the begining.

spend your money here!!

When I first picked up this game I knew it was going to be something special. I read all these reviews saying that this is the most gore filled game ever made. I hear that a lot but i'm pretty good when it comes to gore. This game I still maintain pretty good to the gore. But overall this is a great game. You get to walk around as a convict and no one knows that your alive it's great. You are getting taped killing all these different gangs. You will eaisily get 15 hours of gameplay so you'll get your money's worth. The graphics are kick ass and so is the sound. This game has some pretty funny stuff in it. You will have to repeat a lot of the levels over again to know where stuff is and where to go and what to do. It does get a little annoying but the story line keeps you going. This is probably one of Rockstars best story lines ever. So what it all comes down to if you like gore filled games and don't have a weak stomach and repeating levels doesn't bother you pick up this game now.

Somewhat Good For The First And Last Time...

This game is another Rockstar North game that features blood, guts, machetes and all a blood war. This game ain't any crap like get a shotgun and blow someone away, but timing, patience and skill. Sometimes it CAN get very frustrating when there are a bunch of guys with cleavers chasing you for miles and all you have is a plastic bag.

But now to the good stuff. This game got the hype from video game magazines and video game stuff BUT I never saw any warnings in the papers of this game like they do to Grand Theft Auto. Don't get me wrong, this game is violent in a fun way. Thats why fun is 5 stars, but it ain't as popular as Grand theft Auto, so nervous parents aren't calling the government to try to stop violent video games, even though it's the same company. Well, whatever...

You are a guy named Cash and they have killed you. This director guy is taping you, and you are the next "target" in the brutal blood sport of Carcer City. So he puts you in the middle of nowhere with a paper bag and tells to go kill the people trying to kill you. Sounds like a useless, no plotted horror movie where people go around wasting each other, or is it???

It is actually a somewhat stealth game, (This ain't no SOCOM), and you must hide from the killers trying to kill you. If you are stealthy enough to sneak up on the fool with an axe, you will get a more "bloody" kill then if you ran up to him screaming like a idiot. The better you sneak up, then you may do a "combo" with the axe instead of just chopping him. But as in all games, as the levels get harder, you ain't worried about that and more worried about running away and not getting brutally murdered.

Now this game was kind of good, and it's not for little kids who throw up when they scrape their arm, but any age group from 14 UP can handle the gore. Just watch an old horror movie, this will look like nothing. But this game is good for ONCE and ONCE ONLY. If they make another game where you go around killing murderers for sport again, it will be horrible and even more stupid then they almost made this game.

Good game...I was surprized

I thought this game was going to be kind of dull due to having to sneak up on enemies 99% of the game. I gave it a shot anyway, good thing I did. I liked this game very much. I like how theres soooooooo many ways to slaughter unsuspected dumb enemies...funny sometimes. I personaly like the crowbar the most...whoever has played this game knows why. If your expecting to play a game where you fight a good amount of enemies face-to-face at once...this game ain't for you!!! The most enemies you'll be able to fight at once will be one. I tried to fight at least two enemies at once...They kicked the crap out of me. But a one-on-one fight is fair I guess and is still you will find yourself fighting an enemy for more than a minute if you choose to call him out. If you stealth his a@#, you'll kill him in 3 seconds and in a very brutal way. Sometimes I even found myself laughing out loud of how brutal I killed some guy with a simple "plastic bag"!!!. I deducted a star because of controlling and repetitive killings. Anyway, great game and tons of fun.

A Great, but Brutal Game!!

Truly a brutal, violent PS-2 game, but for anyone over the age of 17, it's worth the purchase!!

The artificial intelligence of the gang members is pretty cool, and adds to the challenge of staying alive... Multiple levels await, in which the object is to sneak, stay quiet and then hide in the shadows ---- until it's time to KILL!!!

It's much more linear than Grand Theft Auto, so you don't have as much freedom to do whatever you want (and the levels must be completed in order), but it's a great game anyhow... Nice graphics and sound, and of course, being it's from Rockstar, there's plenty of blood and gore...

Three thumbs up!!!
