Better Than Fight Night 2004

First of all, I'll try to keep this review short and simple. I own 2 boxing games for the xbox. Fight Night 2004 and Knockout Kings 2002. Fight Night 2004 has slightly better gtaphics and seems to be a "deeper" game, but Knockout Kings 2002 is funner and more playable. In Fight Night 2004, your fighter almost seems to be anchored down....which makes an aggressive attack almost impossible. In Knockout Kings 2002, you can move more freely about the ring...making offense and defense more controllable. Also, controlling punches in Fight Night 2004 is very difficult and slow. Boxing is a fast sport based on instinctive reactions, Fight Night 2004 makes this nearly impossible. Knockout Kings 2002 on the other hand is straight forward and instinctive while still giving you control over a full aresenal of punches and combinations. I have yet to play Fight Night Round 2, hopefully it's a drastic improvement in playability over Fight Night 2004. To sum it all up, Knockout Kings 2002 is a better game than Fight Night 2004.

I was happy to see some new faces in the game (Klitschko Bros) but like others have stated, it is not strategic and lacks the "boxing" of Knockout Kings 2001. It is true to say that every fight is like a slugfest and the one that can hit the buttons the fastest wins. I hope they release a new Knockout Kings and return to the 2001 formula.
Disappointing Game!

"KO Kings 2002" is an ok game with great graphics, but it is ridiculously HARD to play! If you get frustrated easily DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! Every fighter, even the rookies with supposedly low power and skill can beat you up no matter how good you are. Really frustrating and a huge disappointment. Go with KO Kings 2001 where you at least you have a chance to win!

This has pretty much all the champs, Ali, Frazier, Leonard, Lewis, and Holyfield, among others. The graphics, sound, play controls are all well put together. I especially like the blood and bruise feature you can give to a boxer after your player has given him a particularly brutal beating. I've sat down with friends a couple of hours at a time betting on matches we have with each other. That's probably what this game is best for, group participation fun, rather than sitting down by yourself to play it. That is unless you're taking time by yourself to create your own trained boxer. I'd say I created the most powerful one, nobody could beat me after that, until my friend 'accidentally' erased him off my memory card. I say it was on purpose. Definitely go ahead and buy this one at a used price if you want the best boxing game to play with your pals, rather than buying some goofy boxing game like Ready to Rumble, because this a more mature and realistic boxing game.

The game has good graphics and fight sequences. The boxer's facial features and expressions when they get hit is realistic as well, which is one of the reasons why I like this game.
Some of its problems is that Muhammad Ali is too strong and too fast. I was able to beat him, but it took a while to figure out his style. In fact, so much attention and skill is given to Ali that one would think the game should be called Muhammad Ali boxing rather than KK 2002. Another problem is that it's hard to throw body blows. I accidently discovered how to throw body blows when I pressed a bunch of buttons. Until that point, I didn't know I was able to use body punches.
It was disappointing to see only a few popular boxers in this game. It would have been cool to see Dempsey, Marciano, Liston, Tyson, etc.
EA needs to stick to Football

No one can call this a boxing sim with a a straight face. It's a arcade button mashers nightmare of the worst kind. How can EA, who is KNOW for making great sports title drop the ball (no pun) on KK2. First off, EA needs to put as much time & effort on it's boxing games like it does with it's other sports titles. For those who think this is a boxing sim, let me point some things out. Real boxers don't throw 160 punches a round. All boxers don't get up 4 times in the a fight like EA would like you to believe. I'm led to think EA never watched a fight their entire lives considering there are NO one punch KO's. It's the typical, reduce the fighters health to zero before knocking him out/down routine. In this day & age of true gaming sims this doesn't cut it. Like football players every boxer is unique. Boxers fatigue differently, etc. Not all boxers are the same as EA would like you to think. I'm not talking about the obvious attributes like speed & power. They need to take into consideration the boxers heart, chin, defense, illegal tactics, combination punches, signiture punch, boxers weak points, choking in big fights, having a off night, etc.. I might sound harsh, but when I hear of a boxing sim I get very skeptical. EA is insulting boxing fans all around of world with this title by claiming it's a 'sim'. Call it what it is a arcade boxing game with boxers. & why aren't all the fighters real? Football has how many hundreds of players & EA could only come up with 21 real fighters!! Very bad. I suggest they try very, very, hard by inlisting the aid of boxing experts, boxing fans, & trainers alike. This is the only way to get a real boxing sim up & running. The bottom line is EA doesn't care about boxing games so they don't put in much realism to it. You cannot fool me by having great life like graphics when the core of the gameplay isn't.
Anyone who wants a real boxing sim check out lance heffner boxing game. It's great. A true boxing fans dream. There are no graphics so you arcade boxing type fans wouldn't like it..

The game is most definately the best boxing game of all time, but that doesn't say much. The game needs more boxers to choose from, I mean how can you make a boxing game and exclude Roy Jones Jr., Mike Tyson or George Foreman! Nothing (bad) about this game, dont get me wrong, it just needs improvement, hopefully 2003 will be better.
Here's the bottom line...

I purchased this game a few days ago and now getting the hang of it. I like the graphics, they are pretty good and I think you'll enjoy that part of it. As far as the action is concerned, your fingers will kill you playing this game! It is almost impossible to defend yourself so your best defense is a good offense! Using the left joystick the way you are supposed to in order to defend yourself is very awkward. If you try to "bob" left or right, you will be punched like crazy as you are doing so. Still, It's worth the money (I paid $...) compared to most of the high priced games out there today. At least you get to beat the hell out of each other in this game!
