Sammy Studios has recently released the follow up to Guilty Gear with Guilty Gear X2 for the Playsation 2. The 2D fighter now contains 20 different playable characters and a metal soundtrack that sounds absolutely amazing. Stunning visuals, outrageous fighting styles and several levels of play are what you can expect from the title. The story of focuses on war between humans and the bio-weapon Gears. Thought to be finished in Guilty Gear X, they are back and bigger and stronger than ever!
Is this 1985, 2003 or 2180?
Looking at the names of some of the characters and a listen at the soundtrack might have you thinking you time-warped back to the day when groups like Guns N' Roses and Testament were in vogue. That would be because the soundtrack sounds like it came right off the record of Japanese guitar idol Kuni or maybe the band Loudness. Also, the names of the people you'll match up against include Axl Low, Eddie, Zappa, Slayer, Testament, Venom and Chipp Zanuff!
Guilty Gear A La Mode
Each character has some pretty dazzling moves and attacks and it's up to you to beat the living tar out of your opponent before he/she does it to you.
You can practice your combos and perfect your attacks in the training mode. You can also set up the characteristics of your opponent for maximum skill enhancement.
Arcade Mode - finds you matched up against a series of computer opponents until you finish the game. A second player can enter the fray at any time.
M.O.M Mode - enters you into a one-fall match where medals are awarded to you as you utilize your combos on your opponent. The greater the level of the medal the more points you'll get.
Vs 2P Mode - finds you on the battlefield against another live player. You can battle as long as you like and after every victory you can choose different fighters.
Vs CPU Mode - takes you on a wild ride against computer controlled enemies. Again at the end of each battle you can choose a different matchup.
Survival Mode - matches you up in a race to beat all of your CPU opponents in consecutive order with boss characters appearing at fixed intervals.
Mission Mode - sets up specific tasks you will need to accomplish before awarded the victory. By far the most fun and challenging mode Guilty Gear offers.
Story Mode - Pick a character and follow a small story arc until you have lived your destiny.
As you can see there is a lot of fighting to do and many characters to allow you to kick butt now and take names later. The only flaw I had with the title is the lack of an English translation. The game contains subtitled dialogues and is spoken fully in Japanese. I found myself rocking out to a killer soundtrack and skipping all of the text screens. I understand that it's staying true to the original but with all the disc space allotted on a Playstation 2 title, English overdubbs might have made me a little more interested in listening to what the characters had to say.
Still, that doesn't take away from the spectacular graphics, diverse character selection and endless game play you'll encounter with 9 totally different game modes. You can customize the game's features too, adding and subtracting powers and skills, the timer and the toughness of your opponent so that when you become the master of all that is evil, you can try again with increased difficulty.

Guilty Gear X2. This is an unique fighting game not seen around much anymore. A lot of kids will undoubtedly take one look at this game and go (insert sterotypical blonde voice) "ewww, that is SO 1997". This game doesn't use flashy 3D megapolygons. But it has so much style and is so well animated that it doesn't need the high polygon count. Animations are crisp, fluent and pack tons of style. This game does use pixels, along with a few CG flashes here and there. The game looks and feels like a live action controllable anime. That's what makes this game look so great! It is similar looking to the older games like Marvel vs Capcom and all those good times we had at the arcades. However, this game truly does stand out.
How so? This game has wild animation that NEVER rests in its background and in its characters. And each character is unique, adding huge variety. Everything from scary gothic-types with big scythes, to cute little 12 year old pirate girls with big anchors. Every character is either serious, hilarious, cool or just plain bizzare. Each character has their own style and will never, ever do the same things. I've noticed in other fighting games that developers like to rehash and use the same moves for characters. Look at Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, where Scorpion and Kenshi have the EXACT SAME SWORD MOVES. However, in this game, every character will do something different. Each character has true styles that will take some time to learn and master. Each character is balanced and well designed. Each combo is unique in this game. Allowing for long combos, flashy and brillant special attacks, and a new thing added to the fighting genre, the Instant Kill. Instant Kill moves are moves that are hard to pull off but do as their names say. They instantly kill the opponent in one hit! Like a MK fatality, except with a purpose. It does make this game fun as it makes battles able to turn around in a heartbeat.
Controls are solid here and the moves are well designed. They are easy to learn but hard to master. Easy enough for a newcommer to pick up the basics but hard enough for players to polish their skills. Gameplay shines in this game; every single battle is fast and furious. This game is very engaging and fun. You can recover, counter, dodge, counter-dodge, and do other things in this game. Skilled players will be able to counter a 12 hit combo, but even better players will be able to counter the counter. It is fun!
The soundtrack in this game is excellent. Every sound stands out and the music is wonderful. If you're sick of psuedo-temple hymns and techno bubble pop music in your fighting games, then GGX2 will be your best friend. The soundtrack rocks, with a good variety of hard rocking music fitted to the situations. There isn't any cheesy synthetic pyro-rock here either. Each song has its own hard edge and is tailored to the characters' personalities. Even the song titles fit the characters. The sound is very very catchy and some people would even consider buying the soundtrack to this game.
Now, every fighting game has its ordinary shopping list of game modes. Guilty Gear X2 delivers the list and more. Arcade, Story, vs 2p and CPU, Medal mode, mission mode, and a few others make the variety and originality in this game bleed through. Story mode allows you to get to know each character better. And it has tons of replay value, as each character has three different endings to unlock. There are 20 normal characters. That's around 60 endings in total!
Some may be dissapointed on the way Story mode is presented. It is told through anime style slides with audio dilagoue spoken in japanese with english subtitles. The stories themselves range from serious, funny or freaky. All the ends of the story spectrum are here and they will entertain you. The stories are well told. Also, the mission mode does offer a ton of challenge. This is something for experienced players to strut their stuff. The difficulty level on all modes are ranged and can be set for suitable levels for newcomers, or just plain ludicrious for those expert elite. It's a great game that does adjust to your skill level.
This is a truly great game. With its crisp anime-type style, interesting, balanced, and entertaining characters, great gameplay options, rocking soundtrack, entertaining storyline, an adjusting difficulty, and its new twists and spins on a dying genre, I would suggest this game to any fighting game fan. You will truly get your money's worth with this game. It almost makes you want to say "Forget polygons, gameplay is still king!"

The Guity Gear for PSO was great, easily the best fighting game I have ever played. With the arrival of this title on PS2 as Guilty gear X, I thought "CANT be a better fighting game than this", I am happy that I was wrong, this game ROCKS. The graphics are hi-res, the music inspires to fight (BEST OST I have ever heard) the control is awesome, and the gameplay is top-notch. All togheter makes a "must buy". I could rate it with a 9 (its what it deserves) but beacause I LOVE fighting games, this receives 10!
Of course this is funnier with a friend than playing for yourself. Other thing that I REALLY LIKED was the Japanese language with English subtitles. I've ALWAYS dreamed the day I would knew a game of this kind.
Believe me, you cant go wrong with this game.

Guilty Gear X2 is the sequel to the overlooked original. This time around it features much deeper and strategic gameplay, with a few more characters, and a ton more modes. This is a must have for anyone fond of the good old 2d fighters. It has the best 2D graphics and animation on the market and abseloutely KILLS Capcom for visuals. Check this one out for sure.

Guilty Gear X2 is an exceptional sequel to Guilty Gear and Guilty Gear X. Though the sound quality of the music sounds like it changed, it seemed louder in Guilty Gear X, but it does not effect X2 at all. The ganplay is still the same except of the addition to special moves like BURST. Also they changed the moves of some characters mostly downgrades of some of there original moves which kind of made me mad but they just gave there original moves from the previous games intact to the EX versions of the characters. Now there is a story mode which I found really intersting, a mission mode which is diificult at some times or most of the time, M.O.M mode where you fight against every character once and when you inflict damage to them medals pop out of them which you need to collect, and there is also a gallery mode. The standard modes like Arcade, VS, and Survival are still availible. There is also an addition of four new characters which I liked, but I wanted at least four more. They also brought back some old ones Like Justice. I guess Robo-Ky is a new character also. But yeah overall its worth owning and playing.

pretty fun with a lot of technical stuff to learn, only bad/good thing is how fast it is......VERY fast, so if you like crazy action like marvel vs capcom then you will probably like this, it is definitely not like street fighter 3 though so depends on your preference, has some cool crazy effects but not a ton of frames of animation (though each frame does look cool), a ton of stuff to unlock and a BRUTAL hard mission mode for people that want maximum replay/value
Love it

When I first saw previews on G4 for the Guilty Gear series, I knew immediately that I had to try it out. 2D fighters usually hold my interest for a small amount of time, but seeing one that was so unique as the GG series amazed me. As soon as you jump into it, you immediately notice that it almost looks as though you're fighting in an anime. The backgrounds move! The people aren't just frozen in time back there. Gotta love that.
The characters in this game are, to say the least, somewhat.. eccentric. From Faust, who is a doctor with a bag on his head, to Millia Rage, who fights with her hair, the selection is quite different, which only made this game all the more fun.
There are very few cons to this game, despite what many reviewers say. Lack of save points is a common complaint, however, once you get the hang of a game, a save point isn't all that important.. it gets fairly easy once you've memorized the combos and can pull off the instant kills. (The graphics when you're performing these are a MUST SEE, I'm telling you.) And yes, it is possible to defeat the game with just button mashing. BUT! Once you set the level of difficulty up and/or play Mission Mode, button mashing is not an option, and learning the combos is a must. All in all, this game is definitely a must-buy.
Amazing

If I could play only two fighting games for the rest of my life, I would choose this as one of them with Street Fighter 3:3rd Strike finfishing off the list.
I have yet to play the region 1 ps2 version, but one of my friends imported it from japan, and two of the local arcades I go to both have Guilty Gear XX: The Midnight Carnival, and I have to say that it is amazing. The amount of detail that has gone into character design is quite amazing. I-No and Jam both look amazing. The animation looks cleaner than even Street Fighter 3: Third Strike (which is something to say).
A part where I feel it rises above the generic wave of 2d fighters is in its balance, innovation, and speed of gameplay.
Balance: Like SF3:3S, the game is amazingly well balanced, and at my local arcade I have seen people win with almost every single character with the exception of Venom because of his difficult mind-games, set-ups and steep learning curve; and Zappa because, I have never seen someone actually play with him.
Innovation: the weapons based fighting is not really a novel idea to the 2D genre (remeber Samurai Showdown?), but it the weapons that are used that really make the additional aesthetic appeal (May's anchor, Bridgette's yo-yo, and Venom's pool cue, and I-No's guitar) just to name a few. The button configuration (5 of them) is easy to get used to when learning. I feel that this game has improved on its its prequils.
Gameplay: The section that matters the most. Although it may seem that the fighting engine is only skin deep at first glance and it requires mass button mashing. The game is deep in the same sense that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 requires a large amount of strategies to use the individual character's traps and infinite combo's (yes there are infinites in this game). The game also includes cancels and a variety of other special in game fighting features that will be taken advantage of once the engine is learned. Another thing, this game is fast paced, and it rewards rush-down and tries to restrict turtling. Your meter drops if you turtle. The dashes and running and speed of the moves help add to this.
The music is amazing. Like the first game, perfect fighting game music. Remember MvC2's jazz? Fast paced aggressive is so much better for the rush-down combo oriented game.
I have to admit that I have never played this game on the standard ps2 controller, only on a custom-made joystick. So I do not know how the control plays with a controller.
Versus, like any fighting game, is the mode that most shines because it is essentially the most fun to play a fighting game with another person because the computer can become predictable.
All in all, this is an excellent fighting game where I don't think you could go wrong in buying. This is one of the rare very balanced 2D fighters that has made its appearance since 3rd Strike.
