A thrilling game

I'm genrally wary of 2D fighters, and generally of beat-em-up games altogether. I brought this game after I saw a review of it in PSM2: 8/10, and my bro recomended it to me as we are both anime fans. Most fighting games have good moves and a few extra characters, and just about enough storyline to keep you intriuged. Guilty Gear X 2 has SPECTACULAR moves enhanced by 3D grpahics which are neough to make anyone stare in awe. It doesn't just have one storyline, it has many of them, THREE for each character relating to his or her past, or otherwise. Whats more is that all of these unique storylines intertwine. The plot is enough to keep most people fathoming it all out with it's subtle hints for hours. The combo system is unique and varying in complexity from character to character, uncluding relavent, written dialoge between fights. GGX2 has enough unlockable things to make a sequel to itself, and these aren't just pretty things that have no use what-so-ever, they are important and can add-to, and even change, the whole way the game can be played. The game has Story mode, survival, M.O.M mode, Mission mode (these missions are so challenging that they'll keep you busy quite literally for days.), Arcade mode, training, and VS. You have to work very hard for these unlockables, like for example, to unlock GG mode (something that changes the wholeway the game is played) you either have to reach level 300 on survival, view ALL the ending for ALL the 16 characters you can play from the start, or complete 45 missions. The speed and extremities make your blood pump and your heart race, I'm being serious. Once I finished one battle which was a real challenge and a very tight finish, I could hear my heart beating away. By the time you've completely finished this game, the sequel will probably come out a year ago. BUY THIS! IT IS QUITE LITERALLY THE BEST OUT ON THE BEAT EM UP MARKET FOR A LONG, LONG TIME!!!!

The Update GG needed, but definitely not the concept.

I still rank Guilty Gear X2 with high marks but I lack the appreciation of execution this game has except for the music-- the music I'll admit is damn good and the graphics are a huge boost from what Guilty Gear (the original) was but I'm disappointed in the change GG has gone through, becoming the X Series. In a way, I don't even consider the X series a part of the whole Guilty Gear deal but that it was a different direction for Ishiwatari Daisuke's projecto move around in-- it all became a part of the whole pop culture deal rather than the underground swagger it had going on back in the late 90's and seemed to have appealed more to a market sense of things than just the pure gaming aspect of a good challenging game (I mean for crying out loud, they made it HARDER to execute the Instant Kill 'Destroyed' move).

I only play the X-series of GG to compensate for a more eye-candy gesture of gaming as well as enhanced sound quality and music but GG is still my most highly regarded jewel than what X or X2 (XX: Midnight Carnival if you will) could ever be.

If you're a GG fan, get the game I suppose but it really doesn't have that same appeal regardless of what you may think; the whole spiel just doesn't quite fit for me, but that's me. This may seem like I'm putting this game down more than I should be praising it but again, in design the game is great, outstanding even, but the concept runs short and 'sold out' as far as a good game goes.

When Guilty Gear first came out, I was stoked and hoping for a sequel that could turn GG over as a world-class hit in the gaming scene... The X-series came out and ... that's all it just about it, come out but it didn't turn anything over as I thought it would-- so I'm still waiting for that TRUE Guilty Gear sequel despite the cashcowing to whoever's selling the game out now... was Atlus? Now Sammy? Now it's someone else I believe right? Times change but I still hold hope for that one moment when GG will make a true return to its roots-- if Daisuke Ishiwatari is reading this and can read English, I hope you read them intently because a diehard fan is still waiting for a raging comeback to what I acclaim as one of the greatest fighting game franchises of all time. Period.

Why it's the BEST 2D FIGHTER EVER

Before I picked up this game, I used to think that MVC2 (marvel vs capcom 2) and CVS2(capcom vs snk2) were the best fighters ever, but now I can truly say that guilty gear x2 is the greatest 2d fighting game ever made and without a doubt. After I played the game, I realized flaws in my two previous favorites...

Why Marvel vs capcom 2 does not compete with the GGX2?
-Characters in MVC2 are not balanced. some characters will never be used, while others are more overpowered
-Horrible Jazz Music
-Annoying voice in background
-Infinite use of helpers makes the game a bit too dumbed-down for noobs
-AI is stupid.

Why Capcom vs snk 2 is not as good as GGx2?
-Characters in CVS2 lack uniqueness. too much ryu clones...ken, ryu, akuma, evil ryu, shin akuma, dan, ryo, etc..
-you don't learn much about the characters

Why GGX2 is pure quality fighting game?
-Very hard AI. try maniac mode in arcade...
-Awesome story behind characters
-Characters are very very unique and you will love them. Even though there were 23 characters it felt like there were more characters than mvc2's 56 and cvs2's 48.
-The gameplay fighting is VERY VERY GOOD. It's the perfect balance between mvc2's too crazy fighting to cvs2's more technical fighting. Connecting normal moves with supers are not so easy in GGX2 which i found to be one of the flaws of mvc2(noobs might prefer this). The fighting is fast and intense without having all of those helpers run around, but technical enough to really appreciate. Doing big combos really takes alot of time and skills to master. From begining to end of fights, you will not let your guard down because of the instant kills.
-Replay value is INSANE. Mastering story mode, survival mode, MOM mode, Arcade mode on Maniac and especially mission mode should consume over 100+ hours. With unlockable sp and ex characters, you feel like there is so much variation in the game!
-The music is incredible! It really gets you in the mood!

I am not trying to say that marvel vs capcom 2 or Capcom vs SNK 2 are bad games, but seriously.. after you play Guilty Gear X2, you will definitely notice alot of shortcomings from MVC2 and CVS2. The only reason why this game is not a humongous hit is because nowadays everyone flocks to 3D games...if you miss this game just because it is 2D...you are truly missing out...it will probably be the last of the greatest 2D fighters if not the greatest...

Great game but be careful who you buy it from!

This in my opinion is the best 2D fighter on the market, far superior to the likes of Marvel V.S. Capcom 2.There are some price gougers trying to sell this game for close to 200 bucks for new and sealed but in one month (August 2007) the whole gulity gear set is coming in one package for under 40 bucks (this game included).Sort of like what Need for Speed and the Devil May Cry series has done. When this set releases the value of the Guilty Gear X2 sealed games is going to drop from about 150-200 bucks to a mere 10 bucks or so if that.Let these price gougers watch their games values drop to nearly nothing and wait to purchase the full set next month for $39.99

Feel GUILTY for not trying this game!!!

This game is pretty good. Ok, so the moves are hard to execute, but that's what the training mode is for. Also, the game loads matches up to 2 seconds, and you'll want to hear that rock music over and over and over again. And the mission mode is very challenging (i only completed 2 missions). Only problem is that you have to look on the internet to get the different endings in story mode. But this game just beats the .... out of street fighter.

pretty good

pretty fun with a lot of technical stuff to learn, only bad/good thing is how fast it is......VERY fast, so if you like crazy action like marvel vs capcom then you will probably like this, it is definitely not like street fighter 3 though so depends on your preference, has some cool crazy effects but not a ton of frames of animation (though each frame does look cool), a ton of stuff to unlock and a BRUTAL hard mission mode for people that want maximum replay/value

Don't Bother with Capcom VS Marvel, this is better by far

Just for the record (Nancy) it's Guilty Gear X - 2 not guilty gear times 2. Now that weve got that sorted, I'll continue.

Gears= Genetically altered humans created for the purpose of strengthening human DNA which cannot act without command

Magic= A new type of Physics discovered in 2010 allowing the control of fire etc.

100 year war= A war between Humans and Gears led by a super gear with free will named Justice. This war resulted in the victory of humans

Post-War Administration Bureau= An organisation with a grip over the UN and responsible for a lot of blood and pain which collapsed after the 100 year war.

Japan= Japan was destroyed by Justice, and few Japanese people remain, the mythical "Ki" force, the only magic not be yet mastered by physics was almost completely wiped out.

That Man= The creator of the Gears

Graphics: Brilliant mix of Hi-res, well drawn anime ( no sloppy cloth work, only the best! ) and 3D. It really isn't like anything I've seen before, and I used to think that graphics/cartoon mixes were Bad!

In short there is no real main plot to GGX2, only a background on which all the other stories are built. This is the time after the 100 year war. Humans are on the path to peace. But behind the scenes, unidentified bounties are being placed on all the Japanese, and mysterious robots bearing resemblance to Ky-Kiske, a master swordsman, are appearing. Whilst each of the characters carry on with their quests: revenge, peace, protection, bounty hunting, the finding of answers, there is a war bruing. The question is, when is the secretly reformed Post-War Administration Bureau going to cast the first stone?

This game is damn good as it is the most challenging and deepest beat-em-up on the market, or at least till GGX3 comes out. Every character has three paths to unlock in their story mode. There are enough challenges to keep you going for days, quite literally. The unlockable items are actually RELEVANT ( unlike certain unlockables in certain games **coughs: MORTAL KOMBAT!**), as they either change the moves of your character, the way the character handles, or bear a relevance in the story mode. Whats more the unlockable items aren't easy to get. Eg to get GG mode: either ALL endings for ALL characters, get to level 300 in suvival mode, or complete 45 missions (good luck! the missions are so hard that they in themselves are enough to make an entirely new game!).

Modes: Story, Missions, survival, arcade, training, versus.

Characters: all brilliantly designed with pasts that reflect their present, and deep stories. The moves are rendered in a SPECTACULAR mix of anime and 3D that will make anyone gawp in their beauty and power. Alas, everything is not laid out for you so you will actually have to partly guess their pasts if you are new to the GG series.

Moves: The game is fast paced and will literally get your pulse racing, it did mine. The game uses a unique move system that varies from character to character, random buttin bashing generally doesn't work!

Replay value: With 3 endings for all 16 of the characters, lots of extra modes to unlock, and artwork to attain for your trouble after completing the vast amount of challenges, this game has kept me going since march, and I'm still no where near completion!.

Music and Sound: Er, it depends on your taste. Like heavy metal? then this'll be good. Like justin Timberlake? you'd best mute it all and put your own music on intead. The voice over guy is alright, with a nice exclamation of HEAVEN OR HELL before each fight.

I love 2-D games on the PS2 because the high processing power means that they can be extremely colorful and beautiful! This is one of the games that takes full advantage of this! Its a great translation of the arcade version, great replayability (because the matches in this game are so involved) and absolutely beautiful, full of the creepy-cool characters we expect from a Guilty Gear game! We rented it and I played it a bunch but, I definately plan to pick this up when I get a chance!

I love this game

To give you personal background: faves for 2D are Samurai Shodown 1/2 and Last Blade. GGX2 is similarly stylish but faster gameplay. Much less frantic and better balanced than MvC series though. Forgiving to newbies but still deep with good mix of 2D mechanics taken from both Capcom and SNK. Beautiful presentation, excellent high-res, good single-player options, heavy rock soundtrack (can become monotonous), responsive control, ample character selection. VERY addictive. Personal favorite 2D fighting game on nex-gen consoles.
