God hand is one of those games that doesn't reveal its true nature until you've passed several very difficult hurdles, and passing those hurdles of course requires some understanding of the game. This sort of masochistic logic left one IGN reviewer giving the game a 3 out of 10, and one can't help but feeling a little sorry for the guy. The game certainly doesn't go out of its way to separate itself from modern button-mashers or shallow beat-em-ups, although treating it as such will yield you only frustration and failure. Even on easy, the game won't permit you to play it like double dragon or final fight--so what is this game about and why has it snugged its way into cult status instead of being acknowledged as the greatest game on the PS2?
To begin with, the game engine has enormous depth and flexibility--which you will need to master and abuse if you have any intention of challenging the game's punishing difficulty. Much like Street Fighter you will have to use cancels, juggles, grappels and set-ups and 'supers' to deal your greatest damage, like many 3-D fighters, you will have to side-step your opponents attacks with split-second accuracy, and like any brawler, the rule of the land is divide and conquer. Add to this a guard break mechanic, a dynamic difficulty, and the god hand itself and you have a truly complex game where no play though will be like the next.
Did I mention you can customize your moves? Here is another level of depth, meaning that the way you play God Hand won't be like anyone else. Mix and match the way you want to for either maximum abuse or maximum style! The farther you get into the game, the more moves become open to you.
There's also gambling and chihuahua races, but the core of the game remains the fighting--and did I say the AI was really hard? You'll need to know all your opponents moves, counters, etc. if you want to survive. You'll also need to conserve that all-mighty God Hand and the roulette moves (supers) until you really need them. Will you take the game on at its hardest level, or manage the dynamic difficulty by begging for mercy here and there?
How you choose to play God Hand is up to you, but the game rewards endless exploration of its mechanics and is always addictive and thrilling to play.
Definitely one of the best games on the PS2.

God Hand is addictive, fun, and hilarious. Over a hundred different attacks to be learned and a storyline that sports great voice actors and awesome graphics.

I read a review on [...] giving it 3 out of ten. So i was expecting a really bad game, but instead i got a really fun game with some great fighting depth. You can make your on combos out of the moves u buy or find. so if u get tired of seeing the same punch or kick u can change it up. the story is lacking and seems added just for the heck of it. Owning enemies and bosses are fun. And the final battle is intense as hell really got the blood pumping. 2nd play through u can new and more powerful moves. Way better then a 3 at least in the high 7's.

I picked up this game largely based on the reviews here, and I was NOT disappointed! This game is one of the best I have ever played; It can be tough, but it is very rewarding. You play as GENE, a sort of hapless heroe, whose attitude reminded me of Ash in the Evil Dead Series. He saves a girl, Olivia, who bestows upon him the power of the God Hand, in exchange for basically telling him everything to do. Along the way you meet lots of wild charachters including a demon mexican Elvis impersonator(!), A sexy nymph, a gorilla in a wrestling mask, a rocker who uses his guitar as a weapon, midget Power Rangers, and lots of guys spouting Mike Tyson-like threats. Filled with quirky humor and in-jokes, this game will keep you interested till the very end.

This is a really quirky Final Fight beat em up kind of game. The humor is really over the top and sometimes very Japanese. The game itself is a lot of fun though. You buy and unlock different fighting moves as the game progresses and put them together in combinations of your own choosing. The also get to purchase new special powers as well to add to your fighting arsenal. What I liked about the game is that it gave you plenty of times to save your progress and if you died it did not bring you all the way back to the beginning of the level. It also lets you choose your level of difficulty so the game is not overwhelming to novices. I liked the breakpoint while saving that had a shop, a casino and a fighting ring to practice your moves and gain some money. The casino was actually quite fun and pretty addicting. I think this is a fun game with plenty of replay value.

God Hand is a cult classic. It is extremely fun and extremely difficult. It is a beat 'em up game with high charisma. It's a originally a Japanese game however even the Japanese version had English voice acting. It is fairly short but has great replay value and unlocks. I would recommend God Hand to anyone with patience, a sense of humor and someone who likes beat 'em up games. Overall God Hand is unique and will be hard to find someday.
Surprisingly entertaining

This game is what it is, a button smasher, but make sure you smash the right buttons! the graghics are OK, The story is a little thin, it's a wacky, fun, crazy story. BUT the game play makes up for both of these flaws. The fight move are incredible, Techniqes are awsome, and there are over 100! the roullete wheel is a cool idea as well, I like the Casino too, its very well done... you can play video Poker or Black Jack for gold pieces, you can also bett on dog racing too. I really like this game and I'm a picky gamer.. play this game a couple of hours and you'll be addicted
a "fist of the north star" type fighting game.

this is an odd game I was first turned on to by PSM (the magazine) happened to have an article about 11 forgotten gems and this (along with Disgaea: Hour of Darkness) was one of the best picks.
it is a hilarious game set in a world very similar to the fist of the north star world where you might walk up on some baddies beating the crud out of some poor villager and it's totally your choice to save him or let em die.
well the fighting system can be a little clunky at first and the menus are a tad annoying but once past these very tiny flaws this game gets fun with special attacks to the groin *Oi* and even more sick and psychotic moves.
you can defy gravity and the laws of physics. pretty cool.
not quite a 5 star gem but the voice acting was suprisingly good and even funny. the graphics are pretty clean although nothing to write home about. all in all this is a good One Player fighting game with very light rpg elements and a fist of the north star attitude.
Graphics: 4 stars clean and pretty sharp but not next gen or award winning.
Sound: hilarious and witty but can be a little over the top at times and some of these voice actors are quite good 5 stars
overall: though marred a tad by imprecise control and a few annoying menus but otherwise a real pleasure to play it's a shame it was overlooked. 4 stars.
