DBZ Budakai rocks the house

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

I'm a huge DBZ fan and when i heard that the first dbz game for PS2 came out I begged my mom for it. I didn't get it but my friend has it so I would go over to his house if i got bored and play Dbz budakai. This is the ratings that my friend and i came up with.
Graphics-Grainy 3 and 1/2 stars
Story mode-cool and good clips from episodes 5 stars
tournament mode-best mode of all 5 stars
capsules-sweet attacks and energy waves
characters-different then dbz2 but still good heres a list of them. (5 stars) Android #16 Android #17 Android #18 Android #19 Captain Ginyu Cell Dodoria Frieza Young Gohan Teen Gohan Great Saiyaman Goku Hercule Krillin Nappa Piccolo Raditz Recoome Tien Trunks vegeta Yamcha and Zarbon.
Controls-easy to use 5 stars
special moves- a lot easier then tekken special moves (my opinion) like square, square+foward, triangle, square, circle. instead of tekken's foward, down, foward+down, square, star thingy(I still don't know what the stars are for.) triangle+circle+square. the controls are 5 stars
overall-4.5 stars
I added .5 stars because I love dragon ball Z!

To tell you the truth I hate DBZ, The reason I got this is for my brother's birthday, he is a crazed DBZ fan. When I played I was shocked that a stupid show like DBZ can make such a great game. The multiplayer is awsome!! Better then mortal kombat and killer instinct and any other fighting game. I thing with story mode(which is the actual game itself) is that the story is long but it worth it, you fight all these weird people, but its awsome!!!... Buy it!!!...

Budokai: Simple, But Fun...

And true to the series, or as close a following as a fighting rendition of the anime legend can get. Fans who have suffered through Dragon Ball GT imports and DBZ Ultimate Battle 22 for the PSX will find Budokai a must buy. If you're familiar with the series it's an exhilarating trip with (obviously) much better graphics and more entertaining modes of play.

If you're looking for the best fighter out there then Tekken, MK: Deadly Alliance and Virtua Fighter 4 are your best bets, but you may still find the energy blasts, special moves, and unique characters worth a rental. The controls are limited to simple punch, kick, guard and energy functions, as well as the options to customize multiple button presses like P+K+G into other unused buttons.

The fighting itself is mediocre at first glance, you can walk through the story mode spamming the punch and kick buttons if you've got the difficulty on 'Very Easy', but ironically the simplicity of the control scheme help a great deal when seriously playing the 'Very Hard' levels. The computer isn't a perfect simulation busting off counter-20-hit combos when you mis-time a grab, but it's challenging.

The game also includes a nice character editor that was surprisingly deep. You earn money to buy skills through the World Tournament mode or unlock them through the story mode. In Mr. PoPo's shop there are several kinds of skills to buy, all at random (meaning you may get an attack for Piccolo or armor for Vegeta, depending on which skill section you're buying from) except for the 'recommended' skills, which typically cost more but at least tell you what you're getting.

All in all it's a great step in the right direction for fans of the series with an engaging story line (even if you've seen it 20 times on Toonami) and friendly presentation. Decent graphics, plenty of characters to choose from and customize, (though you'll miss the inclusion of Buu and further enemies if you've seen the show) lots of special moves and the American voice acting enunciate a package sure to keep you playing till those last 50 episodes get translated =)

A Great fighting game

Although this game is just a fighting game, i find it to be really good. The characters are put in to 3D Great and the story line is exact to the show between the saiyan saga and the cell games. If you like the show, get this game!

dragon ball z: budokai, is a good fighter, that every dragon ball z fan should own. the graphics are mediocre, but the animations are fairly fluid. the sound will make you feel like your watching the cartoon, good smacks and character yells are here! you get a good amount of characters to choose from, though not all of them are here. gameplay is simple, but fun, there are practice modes, tournement, and story modes. overall this game is fun, and will provide the casual gamer a good time, but dragon ball z fans will be very pleased!

This is it! The finest Dragon Ball Z on market, until the second comes out! This game is incredible! The graphics, the voiceovers, the gameplay, everything! The game is easy and only takes about 2 hours to beat, unless you watch all the movie scenes, but it is incredible! It has all the character's greatest moves, such as Big Bang Attack, Burning Attack, Super Kamehameha, Hellzone Grenade, and the famous Spirit Bomb! One of the problems I have though is that the kamehameha wave is freaking yellow! Its blue, Atari, not yellow! Only Cell's is blue in the game, but no matter! This game also includes a World Martial Arts Tournament mode, vs. mode of course, and a secret Hercule mode as well! The best characters I would have to say are Trunks, Vegeta, Teen Gohan, Cell, and Hercule. Recoome has an attack (Recoome Bomber) that is stronger than Vegeta's Big Bang Attack when he is Super Vegeta! Kinda Funny! Look at the damage under practice, but he has to be pumped up with his ginyu force pose move. Only Gohan can go Super Saiyan 2, but that is ok. He was the only one who did go SS2 in the Cell Games saga. But another funny thing is that the Great Saiyaman is in it. He can't go SS. The next installment, Budokai2, will be even better I hope. It has Buu in it, as well as SS3 Goku, Gotenks, Vegito, and more! 34 characters! 11 more than this Budokai! The strongest move in the game is tied between Goku and Cell's Spirit Bomb, but the best fighter is Vegeta! Well go out and buy this game! If you are a DB/Z/GT fan you'll love it! It is awesome! psst....don't ever use Dodoria, he sucks and has no good moves....

For All Dbz LOVERS !!!

This game is the first of the Dragonball Z Budokai series. It features all the characters from the Saiyan Saga, to the Cell Games Saga. You can also go through the story of Dragonball Z using the Story mode (this is also how you unlock most of the characters). The other two characters you have to get by beating the World Tournament stage.

Cons:
1. If you don't like fighting games this is not for you
2. If you don't want to keep pressing the same button combinations all the time, I'd suggest one of the later games in the series.
3. It only goes to the Cell Games Saga
4. It leaves out the Garlic Jr. Saga (just in case some of you were wondering)

Pros:
1. It's based on the show, so if you're a fan you'll like it
2. If you have some of the other games or if you are thinking about getting one of them this is a good way to train yourself with the controls.
3. This is the only game in which you get to play as either Android 19, Zarbon, or Dodoria (in case you wanted to know if there are any secondary characters in the game)
4. This is the only game in which the characters aren't Cell shaded (although in Dragonball Z Budokai 3 they fixed up the job a little)

Finally I will end this by saying that even though I only gave this four stars, this game was extremely well made. Again this game is also very good at training you with the controls of the other games so if you are having trouble check it out.

Better than other DBZ games I've played....

Despite a number of setbacks, Budokai is a great game. I really liked how it followed the storyline, but as any other fan would expect it would have been nice if they went through the Buu saga. Some would argue that they could use that for a sequel, but then again, that's what GT's for (there's plenty of characters in that series alone). The action's pretty fast, the programmers stayed true to the characters' special attacks, and the actual voices used were impressive. However, it would have been nice if the controls had been altered a bit; the combo system is a bit frustrating (you should be able to execute a Kamehameha without first doing a punch combo on the opponent) and it would be nice if you could jump (or fly) independent of the special moves. Also, character selection is a bit odd; if you're going to use the Ginyu Force, why only have two members? Didn't make much sense to me, although I guess Guldo would be next to useless in the game. If they were to make a sequel for the Buu saga, it would be nice to include not only the obvious (Maijin Buu, SSJ 3, etc.) but also some characters from movies, including Cooler, Brolly and Janemba.
Overall, a very fun game, I've yet to unlock the Great Sayaman, and even Hercule was surprisingly fun to use. Again going with the views of fellow players, if you're a fan, pick this up, if not, rent if first.

Pretty good game

Fans of Dragonball Z will not only claim that this is the best DBZ game ever, but most likely the greatest game ever. For those who are not fans of the the TV series, the game still holds its own. I for one am a fan of the the immensely popular TV show- and the game does stay true to the show. Pros of this game include the over-the-top moves such as the Spirit Bomb and Vegeta's Final Flash. The ability to customize fighters is also very well done as well as the fighters ability to transform during battle. I personally like the idea of collecting the 7 Dragonballs to get your favorite charcters their breakthrough ability. Cons against this the game are few. Number one, the World Tournament mode- your fighter gets knocked out of the ring very easily (very frustrating). Also I can't understand why they didn't include the the Majin Buu series in this game. All in all this is a very good game, especially if you are into DBZ.
