Dragonball Z Budokai succeeds in capturing the likeness and personality of each character from the animated series perfectly. There are 23 characters to play as in all...spanning from the beginning of DBZ to the end of the Cell series (unfortunately, that means no characters from the Buu series). The button layout is simple but effective (punch, kick, guard, and energy), and the action of the in-game fights match the frantic pace one would expect from DBZ. The problem lies within that each of the character's moves vary little from each other. In other words, each character's moves are almost identical with the exception of a few special techniques tagged onto the end of the combos. Another bothersome feature is that you can't perform the large energy beam attacks outside of a combo. On the positive side however, there are several different game modes to help add variety. While the average player can plow through the entire story mode within 2-3 hours, there is still the World Tournament and The Legend Of Hercule modes to clear. The skill editing feature is really just a gimmick, but is a welcome addition nonetheless. So if you are a Dragonball fan that's looking for another way to enjoy the series, Budokai is definitely worth a look. Those simply looking for a great fighter with lots of depth can afford to pass this one up.

Based on the anime series, DragonballZ, "Budokai" is a fighter game that includes 23 Dragon Ball Z warriors. Features include turning Super Saiyan, unlocking, buying, and trading skills. You can also collect 7 dragonballs and "make a wish" which gives you access to all the moves of one character. This can be done as many times as you can keep collecting the 7 dragonballs.

There are several modes in this game. You can either enter the story mode, (which helps you unlock characters) fight in a tournament or even battle against another friend. At first you are given access to the main characters such as Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo. However, these few select characters at the beginning changes quickly as you are able to acquire others such as Freeza, Cell, Hercule, Great Saiyaman, Trunks, Captain Ginyu, Antroid 16, Android 17, Android 18, Android 19, Dodoria, Raditz, Nappa, and Zarbon. However, despite the amount of characters you can play as, (23) there are no characters from the Majin Buu Saga which would include, Goten and Buu. There is also no Android 20 which would've been another great character.

Budokai is a highly recommended game whether you like DragonballZ or are just looking for another 1 on 1 fighting game. This game also has 3D graphics, which takes away from the actual look of what DragonballZ really looks like, but the graphics are still well done.

Pros:
Colorful, 3D graphics
23 characters to choose from
Story Mode
Tons of skills to learn

Cons:
Can be too complex to learn all the skills
Game doesn't follow through all the sagas
=====

Other recommendations for great DragonballZ fighter games is:
Budokai 2: (for Playstation2)Even more characters are involved including Fat Buu, Kid Buu, Goten, and all the fusions such as Vegeto. Android 20 is also included. If you have Budokai, you can trade capsules, (skills) between Budokai and Budokai 2. This game is also cell shaded to look more like the anime series.
Ultimate Battle 22: (for Playstation)Great DBZ fighter game
Teiketsu: (for GBA) another DBZ fighter worth a look.

Budokai for Fans Only

Dragonball Z: Budokai closely follows the story line from Dragon Ball Z. It begins with the Saiyan saga and finishes with the Cell saga.

Graphics: 5/5.
The graphics are really good in this game. While they aren't "great" compared to other games such as Final Fantasy, you have to keep in mind that the characters are meant to have an anime look.

Gameplay: 4/5
If you have play Final Bout, you shouldn't worry, because the gameplay has vastly improved in Budokai. The controls are easy to learn, and all of the moves are simple to pull off.

Story: 5/5
Quite simply, if you enjoy Dragon Ball Z, than you will enjoy the story line. Its the same thing!

Sound: 5/5
The sound in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai is nothing shorter than amazing. While duking it out with your favorite villian, you can listen to the music of the actual fight from the TV show. The game uses the actual voices from the TV show for an extra touch of realism.

Summary:
While Dragon Ball Z: Budokai is a fun game, it does have some flaws. One of them is tournament mode. The computer is really, really cheap. If you play tournament mode, expect to get angry once and a while. Another thing is that most of the projectiles need to be used at close range. For example, to use Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon, you to kick your opponent in a certain way. You will kick them in the air and hit them to the ground. You then shoot it it at them. So if you are expecting something like you would find in Street Fighter, than this game is not for you. Another downside is you cannot jump, or duck, or even fly when you want to. The makes game play a lot more difficult. However, there are some very interesting things about Budokai that seperate it from the rest. Their is a unique character customization in which you can create the ultimate character. Basically, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai is a good game if you are a Dragon Ball fan. If you just want to buy a good fighting game, then look somewhere else. You won't find it in this game.

PROS:
+ Good game play.
+ Easy super moves.
+ Great graphics and sound.
+ Customization of allows your to create the ulimate character.
+ Burst mode

CONS:
- The tournament mode tends to be a little cheap.
- Almost all projectiles need to be used at close range. (ie. Special Beam Cannon, Kamehameha, etc.)
- Good for Dragon Ball fans, bad for fighting game fans.
- You cannot jump or duck.
- You cannot fly whenever you want.

I'm a HUGE freakin' fan of Dragonball Z... and I do mean a HUGE FAN! And when I got the first 3 games: "Dragonball GT: Final Bout", "Dragonball Z: Legends", and "Dragonball Z: Ultimate Battle 22", I was overjoyed. "Ultimate Battle 22" was pretty good (even though there was no story) with good graphics and pretty cool moves. "Legends" was awesome... the graphics and the fighting style used in this game were very unique and made each fight exciting, just like the ones in the show. "Final Bout" was pretty awful, despite the fact that it was the first game in 3D. But "Budokai" has proven to be the best so far. The story mode is awesome: this is the first fighting game I've seen that actually has a story built into it and it's almost completely accurate to the show.
The graphics are great and the fighting style... well, it's not wonderful, but it's alright. I'd say it was like a mix between "Dragonball Z: Legends" and "Dead or Alive". There's also a tournament mode (you take part in the World Martial Arts Tournament), practice mode, duel mode(v.s. mode), and edit skills, where you customize the fighters with fighting moves and attacks by using the capsules you acquire in story mode.
This game goes from the Saiyan Saga to the Cell Games Saga (although it completely skips the Garlic Jr. Saga); I'll explain how the story mode goes:
When you first play the game you're Goku and you fight Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta, Fake Vegeta(while training in the Capsule Corp. spaceship) Recoome, Captain Ginyu (you even fight Ginyu in his own body while Ginyu is in Goku's body), Frieza, and Android 19. Then for a little while you're Piccolo and you fight Cell and Android 17. After that you're Goku again and you fight Cell; finally you fight the Cell Jrs. and Cell as Gohan.
The second time you play the game you're Piccolo and you fight Raditz, the Saibamen, and Nappa. Then you're Vegeta and you fight Zarbon, Frieza, Android 19, Android 18, and Cell.
Along the way, you also do some special bad guy role playing levels. First you're Vegeta and after you defeat Goku, Krillin, and Gohan, Vegeta becomes a Super Saiyan in front of Yajirobe. Then you're Frieza and after you defeat Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Goku, Frieza wishes for immortality from Porunga, blows up Namek, and heads for Earth on his spaceship. Finally, you're Cell and after you defeat Android 16 and Android 17, Cell absorbs Android 17 and when trying to absorb Android 18 he accidentally absorbs Krillin! Yeah, he then becomes weaker, short, and orange. Then after you defeat Yamcha, Cell gets incinerated by Tien's Tri-beam; suddenly, you see Cell in his Perfect Form waking up from a nightmare in the middle of the Cell Games Ring. It turns out it was all a dream. That was awesome. Oh boy, I typed too much. Get this game... bye.

FINALLY WE HAVE A GREAT DRAGON BALL Z GAME !!!

We have been waiting for a great DBZ game and we finally got it. You can either choose story mode, world tournament, duel, or practice. In the story mode you start in the Saiyan Saga and go all the way to the Cell Games. Along the way to defeating Cell you'll getnew characters and new skills. There are 23 characters you can be they are Gohan (as a child and teenager), Nappa, Android 18, Hercule, Goku, Android 16, Android 17, Zarbon, Yamcha, Frieza, Android 19, Piccolo, Cell, Trunks, Dodoria, Captian Ginyu, The Great Saiyaman, Tien, Recoome, Vegita, Krillin, and Raditz. You get to use well known moves such as the Spirit Bomb, Kamehameha, The Special Beam Cannon, and The Destructo Disc. Choose from easy, normal, hard, or very hard modes of play.ITS THE BEST GAME EVER. They are making a secong game with the Buu Saga. This game has good graphics, sound and outstanding gameplay. I also reccommend The Legacy Of Goku 1 and 2. Don't think of buying the ultimate battle 22 because it costs less, this game is simply better than it. Iws'nt going to get this game because it wasnt an adventure game and those are the kind I like but, even though its a total fighting game I gave it a shot and now im hooked on it. Take my word for it get this game its awesome if Icould have I would have given it a hundred stars.

I really like this DBZ Budokai game because I'm a mega huge dbz fan, and it has Goku, Kid Gohan, Teen Gohan, Gt. Saiyaman Gohan, Vegeta, Future Trunks, Piccolo, Frieza, Cell, and alot more, u can unlock, buy, and trade skills like the Kamehameha Wave, Spirit Bomb, Final Flash, Special Beam Cannon, Distructo Disk, Super Saiyan, and Super Saiyan 2 and alot more, it's really fun, and I can never stop playing it, but... the only thing that's keeping me from giving it a full 5 stars is because it ends after the Cell Games saga...but it didn't and theres nothing we can do about it, but this game is still an awesome...game, and that's all what I have to say in this review, cya.
