Def Jam Vendetta: Fight For NY may appear to be an easy way for EA Games and Def Jam to make some extra cash by employing hip hop acts to star in this game. However, it is a very intricate, well thought out fighting system that transcends the button smashing of many other games. I don't think of myself as an avid gamer, but I know a great game when I play one.

The gameplay is fantastic with many fighting styles to choose from, various punch, kick and grapple combos and a very impressive create-a-fighter process. The ability to choose between, and combine up to three of five possible fighting styles is perhaps the best part of the game. Each style is unique and each combination of any number of styles results in an unique hybrid style. The graphics too are quite impressive, especially considering it is not a next generation console.

The story mode is long and satisfying, although not very flexible in that you really have no choices in what direction your player chooses, that is, you have to follow a strict story and cannot deviate from it, which detracts from the replay value. Outside of story mode this is a great game to play with friends with options of one-on-one, two-on-two and 3 or 4 player free-for-alls. There are also subway matches, window matches, inferno matches, ring-out matches, and demolition matches, which I won't talk in detail about. While the number of different matches seems impressive, it does feel as if there is so much diversity as it may appear.

I am a fan of hip hop, and although many of the characters in the game aren't very talented artists in real life, it is fun to listen to my Redman, Method Man, Erick Sermon, Ghostface etc. playlists while fighting as the character. Additionally, I enjoy creating other rappers (Gza, Chuck D, Big Daddy Kane) through the create-a-fighter mode in story mode, and although they don't perfectly resemble their real life counter part, the system is detailed enough that similarities are clear. Other than the rigidity of story mode, my only complaints are the inability to have the CPU fight as one of your created fighters and that the game has frozen a few times during story mode or i would get stuck running and not be able to move. Other than that, it is an excellent game that I would recommend to any fan of fighting consoles.

It's nice when a company has faith in it's unique franchises. And with a company as big as E.A., you would have faith too.

I'm talking about Def Jam: Fight for NY. Boasting some of the biggest names in both hip-hop fashion and talent (who lend their voices to the game) really adds to the authenticity of the culture the game portrays.

The fighting engine is easily compared to the classic wrestling titles on the N64. This is a good thing, as some will say these are some of the best games of the genre.

There are 5 fighting styles, which as you progress, allow mixing between them. With unlockable's including wrestlers, venues, and merchandise, there is plenty to keep you playing. Fans of fighters and hip-hop shouldn't miss this one.

An awesom game

I got to give EA credit for this game. The graphic are the coolest i seen in a while. Sound of up to date, not the best only because i don't like Rap, hip hop, or R&B. A little rock would be cool, but then it might not make sense. There are a lot of unlockable in this game, in fact the most fun i had was dressing up my fighter. The story mode SUCK! How could anyone say the story is good is beyond me. Now this is where i had to take away two star from this game, the gameplay. The grapple is the x button instead of the O button like in the smackdown series. This might not matter if you never play any wrestling games, but if you have already play any smackdown games, the control can be very frustrating. Now imagine switching back and forth from smackdown to def jam, and you get what i mean. Let just say that even if you didn't play any smackdown series, the control layout is still too difficult. Another thing i found in the game that could hurt the game was the limited arsenal of moves. Yeah you get a lot of move to unlock, but it only blazing moves. The most move i see in the game was like 5 front grapple and 1 back grapples. This is a sad excuse on the behalf of the producer. Seriously this game lack moves, and is enough to make the game less fun. Thankfully there is more than enough fighter to suit your need.
This game should only be play with another person, if you are looking for a good single player game, look elsewhere.

Def Jam Fight for New York is an evolution from the WWE wrestling games like WWE Smackdown! and Bring the Pain, and it really shows.

The graphics are first class and the music and FX are better than any fight games on the market. The storyline and create-a-fighter modes are genuinely addictive. The free form way the custom characters can be modified and enhanced add to the enjoyment of the game, especially collecting all the "burning taunt" special moves.

The controls are difficult to begin with but not insurmountable to learn. Once the controls are mastered the environment attacks and double team attacks come into their own. Subway fights (where opponents can be thrown in front of trains!) and the car battles (where opponents cars can be trashed during the fight) are just laugh-out-loud features of the game.

The game only gets four stars overall due to its repetitive nature and the impact of luck in critical fights, although it can be argued that it reflects reality.

A final point to EA...

Please continue with this franchise, there is a niche where this game fills, it is not a fight sim like the Fight Night series, or Martial Art fist fest like Tekken, Dead or Alive and Virtua Fighter, or Wrestling Franchise.

It is unique and fun. More artists/Fighters and side missions would make the game a must buy.

Great game
