If All Goes Right...

...this could be the best game to ever grace the fighting genre. As we know, last year's Def jam Vendetta was no slouch, in fact it won the hearts of gamers and critics all over the place. It recieved no poor reviews, and some critics went as far as calling it one of the best fighting games ever. And with its unique formula that nobody thought would work, combining hip-hop and wrestling, it was a truly special game.
Now it is back, and much, much bigger. There are many more options to boot. For one, there is now an in-depth create-a-fighter(Thank God!!)and many more details. there are too many fighters to count, and an overhaul of hip-hop artists. Why 50 Cent and Jay-Z are not included is beyond me, but Snoop Dogg is the lead villian this time through, which is cooler than a cool winter day. Now the girlfriends are better too, and they even inlude Lil' Kim, hip-hop's godmother Kimora Lee, and Carmen Electra. Win big and you will unlock these honeys. Also coming are major facelifts and sound improvements. There are new, and much better beats than last time, and many more too. And the graphics are a MAJOR overhaul, with incredible looking fighters and environments.
If all goes right, this could become the coolest game on your shelf. We'll just have to wait until September rolls around...

Battle for Control ( of your fighter )

The graphics and sound for this game are as awsome as all the rest of the reviewers here have mentioned. What most of them fail to mention is the controlls are so sluggish that the game is damn near unplayable. As a two player game this can be very annoying, but both players are equally handicapped. I've been trying to finish this game for roughly a week and now realize that my mistake was purchasing it based on reviews like the ones given, and not reading the negative reviews carefully. Pros
the game looks great,
the create-a-fighter system is good,
the ability to use the audience and weapons (if you're lucky enough to have the controls work for you) is great,
the special moves in the game are very well animated,
the sounds are right where they should be.
Cons
just one flaw, the oh so sluggish control that the player has over the character that's he's representing.
Imagine being in a streetfight but having to count to three slowly before you do anything (infuriating) . I would suggest that EA's senior producer Josh Holmes spend more time trying out the game and less time doing stupid interviews with EA marketting. This single flaw destroys the potential of what could have been a great game. I can even see why game magazines that might have tried it for 30 minutes or an hour (and have substaintial advertizing revenue from EA) would rate it so high.

This game is super cool!!!! I started playing it and could not stop for 4 hours. There is a cool story mode and battle mode. There are fighters to unluck as well as venues. With the money earned you can buy new clothes, shoes, Jewelry, and hats. I recomend this game 100%. There are so many fighters and fighting styles to choose from. The coolest thing is that you get to create your own fighter when playing the story mode. If you are thinking of getting this game, think no more and get it. You will NOT be disappointed.

Mediocre fighting system

The concept was great: a fighting game with lots of different styles and a halfway decent story. The execution was simply poor. This game has some good features like nice sound, good graphics, lots of characters to play. Unfortunately the game suffers from huge gaps in the fighting gameplay itself.
Since the upside of this game is mentioned in other reviews I'll cut to the downside. The game is mostly won or lost by who can throw the other guy into the crowd the most. While the occasional crowd involvement would be good, this is more repetitive and really detracts from the whole thing. The other hugely glaring error is the lack of moves. There are many moves that you can unlock but unfortunately these are all blazing moves. Your bread and butter softening up moves are extremely limited. This also gets very repetitive, almost boring. Simply put the game had potential but suffers from a lack of fighting options. Try Pride FC or WWE:Smackdown series for a real set of move options. Actually, just try WWE or Pride FC in general. Your $$ can be better spent elsewhere.

I'm not 13 and this game is well worth the money.....

Just picked this up last night and I stayed up until 1am playing. It's volumes above the first, you have more control over the look and feel of your character and have the option of purchasing new haircuts, tattoos, clothing, and jewelry as you progress through the game. The combos and attacks are alot harder and you have the option of picking up weapons (bottles, pool sticks, debris) or getting help from onlookers in the crowd who will grab your opponent while you hit him. The first major boss character is ICE-T (if he were on steroids) and he's pretty easy to take down. The only (minor) disappointment for me was how they could make a Def Jam fighting game and not include LL Cool J(?) But the artists included are extremely life-like and say some pretty wild stuff before and after matches. I'm guessing the final match up is between your character and Snoop-Dogg or Crow as he's called in the game. Pick this up, you won't regret it at all!!!!!!!!!!!

good concept + frustrating control = BAD GAMEPLAY

I got to give EA credit for this game. The graphic are the coolest i seen in a while. Sound of up to date, not the best only because i don't like Rap, hip hop, or R&B. A little rock would be cool, but then it might not make sense. There are a lot of unlockable in this game, in fact the most fun i had was dressing up my fighter. The story mode SUCK! How could anyone say the story is good is beyond me. Now this is where i had to take away two star from this game, the gameplay. The grapple is the x button instead of the O button like in the smackdown series. This might not matter if you never play any wrestling games, but if you have already play any smackdown games, the control can be very frustrating. Now imagine switching back and forth from smackdown to def jam, and you get what i mean. Let just say that even if you didn't play any smackdown series, the control layout is still too difficult. Another thing i found in the game that could hurt the game was the limited arsenal of moves. Yeah you get a lot of move to unlock, but it only blazing moves. The most move i see in the game was like 5 front grapple and 1 back grapples. This is a sad excuse on the behalf of the producer. Seriously this game lack moves, and is enough to make the game less fun. Thankfully there is more than enough fighter to suit your need.
This game should only be play with another person, if you are looking for a good single player game, look elsewhere.

Completely overrated.

Yes, I understand. Ohhhh ahhhh, my favorite rap stars beating eachother to a bloody pulp. My God, the brilliance!

Partially, yeah. Three stars for a good concept, and fantastic graphics.

As other reviewers point out, though, the game is ridiculously difficult. Remember how brilliant it was when WWF/E got smart and decided "Hey, you know in our video games, during matches, we really should create the ability for the player and the computer to slowly wear eachother down until one is too weak to fight back?" It was a good idea. Unfortunately, this game doesn't utilize such an idea.

1/5 stars for gameplay (yeah, believe it or not, gameplay does factor in. Since, you know, this IS a video game.)

Instead, they said "Hey, you know what would be cool? How about during matches, we just have the computer get up after every move, be it a blazing finisher or a shot with a pool que, or anything. And, just for kicks, let's make the player lay on the ground for 3-5 seconds after getting hit with a dropkick."

I'm not a casual gamer when it comes to wrestling games, and I can usually beat the computer on the hardest settings of most games. I say this because of the fact that I fought the same guy 5 times in a row, and lost all 5 times. A few times my "blazing" finisher decided not to work when I executed it perfectly, and a few times they just didn't do any damage at all.

Also, this game is slightly racist. I don't mean this in the "kill whitey" type of way, nor am I screaming bloody murder about the "opression of my people". However, the only white character in the game is Henry Rollins (someone please explain THAT one to me). And, for anyone out there wanting to make a white Create-A-Player, you'll have to settle for a light-skinned black guy with black features and voices.

Now, I'm the most anti-racism person in the world, but come on. The main draw of the Create-A-Player mode is the player being able to re-create themself in the video game. And the developers couldn't have assumed that EVERYONE who would ever take an interest in this game would be African-American.

One of the worst parts of this game (yes, there IS more) is the extreme lack of moves in your arsenal. I mean, EXTREME. The pickens are very slim, my friends. You literally have about 5 grapple moves, maybe less. Most of them are hard to execute (simply because the computer often reverses them or breaks the hold), and none of them are all that impressive. And as another reviewer stated, it is mostly about who can throw their opponent into the crowd the most. Couple this with the EXTREME (yes, I used the word again), EXTREME lack of the ability to reverse moves (If you try 10 times, you'll succeed once or twice.), and you have a very unplayable game.

Normally obstacles and challenges in games are welcomed, they keep it fun. We all have our favorite hard games. The ones that are really really difficult, but keep drawing you back in for more punishment. Well, if you're a glutten for punishment, you'll like this game. But for those of us who enjoy difficult games that keep you addicted (such as some select GTA: Vice City missions), this game is a no-no.

I gave this game a couple of hours, but there simply wasn't anything there to keep drawing me back. Perhaps it's the fact that I'm not a hip hop fan, and fighting through unbearable matches just to get "bling-bling" isn't really enough motivation for me to subject myself to the frustration, and I'm not impressed by seeing MTV rappers beating the snot out of eachother.

Rent it first. Even if you are a hip hop fan. Rent it, decide if you think it's worth the trouble, difficulty, and teeth-grinding frustration. If it is, buy it. But who wants to waste their money if they don't have to?

Hope this helps.
