WE SHOULD ALL CONTACT SQUARESOFT

Being a big Wot fan, I couldn't wait for this game came out. But I only had a 386 PC! Then I got a much better PC, which left me with nearly nothing moneywise. Or I simply couldn't find the game. So I downloaded the demo--as one person said here, the demo is a horrible representation of the game, I'll take their word for it. But from what I did play, I was most impressed at first, playing it often, then there was a several-month period when I didn't play that game at all. The architecture is FANTASTIC in this game. Not exactly how I visualized it in the books, but pretty close. Multiplayer is Okay, but not great. The battle system, I think, is kinda clunky. When you need a certain ter-angreal right NOW it's hard to get to it without accidentally skipping over it. There isn't much of a variety of bad guys from what I've seen. Where's the Draghkar? Myrddraal? Darkhounds? Gray Men? etc. The atmosphere is nice in this game, though. Very dark at times. I'll probably still buy this game--hence the 3 stars. But if you want my real opinion, I feel that Robert Jordan's Wot series should be made by SQUARESOFT (the company that makes the Final Fantasy series). Squaresoft has EXPERIENCE with RPG's and if anyone could do justice to RJ's masterpiece, Squaresoft can. Like many of you have said, there isn't much of a quest element in this game. Anyway, I don't know about you, but I'm going to e-mail Squaresoft now and see if I can convince them to make something that will be what this game should have been.

Wheel of Time ROCKS!!!!!!

This is one game that I do like. I dont like many games because of all the things you have to remember on the keyboard but this game you only use your arrow keys and mouse to move. There are 3 levels you can play easy medium and hard. I choose the easy and I'm having a great time even though easy for me is hard. This game is long. Not that quick run through game but a nice long game with well played movies through the game. The graphics are great! For this price this game is worth it.

Never read the books, but love the game

I've never actually read the books, but a friend has, and has been telling me about the game for a while, so I decided to try it out. I was pleasantly surprised; some of the best graphics I've seen, creepy atmosphere, great monsters, great spells...my main reservation is the fact that choosing spells in the heat of battle can get tough...great stuff

Inventive and creative Multiplayer.

I'll keep this short, since I played it such a long time ago. This game
was so underrated, it's a shame it didn't do all that well. The multiplayer
was creative and interesting - spell casting ... and counter spells! It turned
boring "shoot-em melee" (ala Quake2/3) into a tactical shooter. Plus
additional setup time for multiplayer and the setting of traps and
barriers was unique, and added enhanced play value.

And the Unreal engine was used to its potential. Gorgeous maps and

lighting. Almost as awe inspiring as the original Unreal maps when they
came out (and they were - don't be jaded by today's standard's (4/21/2003))
(Sunspire, anyone?)

I think the only reason I stopped playing this game was that I went from
a school T3 connection to a 56k modem ... and then got caught up later
by other games.

What a piece of garbage.

This game utterly failed in the market for good reason. The graphics and sound are fine, but the gameplay completely sucks. Basically, there are three aspects of it that monopolize the entire Wheel of Time gaming experience:

1) Trying to select the right spell you want, by spinning your mousewheel or tapping a key over and over like a moron, usually while in combat and under fire. The game has 39 spells btw. Let me type that again: 39. You do the math on how much fun this is.

2) A maze/movement type puzzle around every corner. EVERY. CORNER. Take a step, hit a wall and try to figure out what inane "puzzle" the game designers had in mind for you to advance another few feet. Take another step, repeat. And repeat. And repeat. And repeat. The entire game is like this.

3) Dying. Your character is very weak, your strong weapons injure you about 80% of the time, and the enemies are very strong, both to kill and in their attacks. You will die. And die. And die. And die. In between every fun map puzzle, you can look forward to dying one or two times, sometimes several. Your save/load fingers will at least get a workout, if your shooter skillz don't.

I got this for a just a few bucks, and I feel cheated, more for my time and frustration levels trying to "play" it then anything else. I feel sorry for anyone who bought it when it first came out, expecting a good gaming experience to go with the WOT license. My two cents: this game is complete crap. Don't even waste the wear on your hard drive installing it, let alone any money buying it or time playing it.

A Nice Try, But No Dice

"Wheel of Time" by Atari is based off of Robert Jordan's ongoing (interminable) series by the same name. It is a FPS with both Single Player and Multiplayer modes.

As far as its actual graphics goes, they are pretty good for the time . Sound, also, was done reasonably well.

However, gameplay was horrible. While the missions themselves did make some vague amount of sense, the devil is in the details, and this is just one of the places the game failed. There were many instances where I was able to trick the computerized enemies (MOBs) into standing in places where I could hit it at my leisure and it would just stand there and take it. I also was able to use certain spells through walls when it made no sense for it to do so.

Another problem was the control system. Movement worked fine, and I never found myself stuck anywhere. But the selection of items (all "spells" in the game are derived from items which you collect and in some cases use up) for use, particularly in combat, is problematic to say the least.

The plot is in many cases highly dubious if one knows much about the series it is based from. In fact, it borders on absurd. Also, I found the ending to be highly anti-climatic, to say the least.

In all, this is a game that tried hard to be something great, but fell far short. Like the author of the series, it appears that SquareSoft bit off more than they could chew.

Insanely Addictive!!

This game rocks! It has kept me up many nights- the multi-player portion is the best I've ever played

It's more than just a game!

First, the raw game itself: The graphics are absolutely beautiful, and the music contributes greatly to the overall atmosphere. As far as appearance goes, this game might be the best ever created. The downside: A powerful computer is necessary to fully witness the splendour. A vodoo3 video card, 500 MHz computer, and 128 MB RAM will make this absolutely awe inspiring.

The online community is what really makes the game a winner though. The community is small and personal, and has a personality far above and beyond that of any other online game. While the game is intended as a Single Player game, it's the multiplayer experience that truly makes it wonderful. But again, a good connection (at least 56K modem, Cable modem recommended) is very important to enjoy the game to its fullest.

A fun game, but lacking.

As a die-hard WOT fan, I was sorely dissapointed in this game. The graphics are great and the multiplayer is very fun and engrossing, but that's about it.
The major faults were that the storyline, contrary to what many people claim, in no way ties into the plot in the books. But more importantly, you cannot play as Rand (the main character in the books). I would have given this game a far better score if you could.
Second of all, you cannot channel the One Power (a magic-like force) directly. Maybe it's just me, but the idea of not using your inborn ability to channel is rather stupid. Also, while men who can channel the Power play and important role in the books, there is almost no referance to them in the game so far as I have played. It would be awesome if you could encounter an insane male channeler and confront him (a dangerous situation, considering that in the books men are generally more powerful channelers than women).
Thirdly, adapting WOT into a first person shooter was a decidely bad idea. A format such as that in "Dungeon Siege" would have been far more desirable.
However, if you have not read WOT, or are not a Wheel of Time fanatic, this is a fun and engrossing game.

All of you complaining....

This game is amazing in terms of graphics and game play. that is all i will say concerning the game. but to all you people out there who said the game was below your expectations, there is a line from a song that fits in with this situation; "if you don't expect too much from me, you might not be let down". i'll leave it at that. love the game, love the books. ~signed the HMFIC
