Right out of the box the game is really really buggy, but this patch that is coming out is huge and is gonna fix AI and will let you save anywhere. And for those of you who think melee fighting gets a little to hectic, it will let you pause and then assign them actions. So if your thinking about not buying it cuase you heard it was buggy still buy it cause there are things called patches.
Not a bad buy

I've never played Vampire in tabletop roleplay so I'm not quite sure how true the game was to its predescessor. But it was still a very good introduction to the system for me. I learned about magic and lore and the differences between a ghoul and a vampire and a human.
The main character, Christof, was very interesting to play. My first nervous twinge about playing a vampire themes games was "Ew... so I'm going to play a bloodthirsty commando?" but as I progressed through the chapters I found that I was in control of my own destiny. I could try to be kind and just or I could be as cruel a jerk as I wanted.
There were some annoyances like the lack of saves and the utter confusion of combat and lack of tactics (You pretty much just mobbed a monster with everything you had and hoped it was enough) but I've heard that this will change soon with a patch.
The game progresses from the days of the crusades to modern times. I didn't care much for the time jump (It would have been much cooler to slowly progress through time to modern ages) but that might have made the game ten times longer that it was, so that's just a small gripe.
The characters of Christof, the holy knight turned Vampire, and his love Anezka, whom he searches for out of guilt and out of love are wonderfuly done and made the story more real. The dialogue was well written and made up for the messily done hack and slash fests one must take to progress through each level.
Another really great feature is the multiplayer capabilities. One of the things that makes it so great is that a person has the option to be a game master in an adventure and control just about everything. It's really great to be able to craft your own games and so far this has been the first one I've ever seen with this option instead of running Quake-like through a maze and killing everybody in sight.
Overall there were some innovative options in this game and it was well put together, just the combat was a little confusing at times and the lack of saving points made it difficult. Still, I think that the good points outweigh the bad.
Thoroughly enjoyed this game

Although this game can get slow at times with some long winded diologue, I found this game to be right up my alley. If you love vampires in general, and appreciate some kickin graphics, this game is for you.
I would not consider myself a gamer afficianado, however, I found the game easy to learn and found the fighting/story line combination to be a wonderful balance.
All in all, the story line is really great, and the cliff-hanger ending has left me waiting for the next release. Enjoy!
Hours and Hours of fun.

I followed this game through its stages of development and was very very anxious for it to be released. I'm not a big fan of RPG's, but I love games with great storylines and fantastic graphics and Vampire: The Masquerade is one of them. I was hooked from the first time I popped the CD into my drive, all the way until I (sadly) beat the game. I have never played the P&P version of Vampire, so I was afraid that I would be confused by the storyline and not know what the characters were referring to. But the game explains everything with excellent voice acting and an extensive manual.
Alot of people get frustrated with the save feature and the difficulty of the bosses, but would you rather breeze through the game easily or be challenged to earn the right to finish the game? Also, Activision is releasing a patch that is going to allow a "save anywhere feature" and is going to lower the difficulty of the bosses. All in all, this game is !great! and is worth the money.
Never before has a game had me addicted like this.

My first impression was not good, with the limited saves, real time combat, and buggy play. But after I patched, which anyone getting this game will surely do, it grabbed me and still hasnt let go. I got it at 10:00 AM on a Saturday morning, and didn't stop playing till 4:00 AM Sunday morning. I took a total of 3 breaks. Diablo 2 never did this to me. If you like RPG's go get this, the master of all RPG's. It's the Half-Life of RPG.
could be better

I bought this game the day it came out. I had read the PC Gamer review, and wasnt very pleased with what I saw, but was so excited about running my own games online, I had to have it. Surely enought, the initial release was terrible. I only played for about 20 minutes before giving up in frustration. But Nihilistic (the company that made it) deserves more then that for their tremendous efforts. So after the 1.1 patch came out, I tried it again, and now I am addicted. I especially reccomend the storyteller mode; I had the most fun pushing my attributes to 100 and making myself a second generation Elder vampire.
This game is worthwhile, but only if you have the time to download the patch. Even then, it is somewhat frustrating.
Don't believe the game reviews.

I read about five different reviews for the game and they all said the same thing good but could be better. I think it is the best game I have. The gameplay is just like diablo with the weapons and the healing and scrolls. The camera is much better; instead of being way away from the action you are right there behind it, like a third person shooter. I love the game, its a must buy!
It was....pleasing

Okay, this wasn't the greatest game I've ever played, and sometimes you just say to yourself after trying a boss (they don't really call them that, but you can see that it is a boss) " Man, this is way too hard" and then you exit and stare at the menu screen for a half an hour (this might just be me, but it's what I did.) The beginning was cool, but then that clocktower in vienna was the most annoying level, mostly because the AI is so bad. The combat was okay, you just keep clicking and there wasn't the most exicting combat moves, although sometime you could stay up till almost 3am in some towns. I know having a challeging game could sometimes be a good thing, I think they overdid it. I kept saying to myself when I was still in prague, "When is it going to turn to the modern age! " Plus Christof is always thinking bad thoughts, he never says "What a ride!" or "That was fun!" I know it might sound crazy, because the whole game being a dark game and all, I think that you have to be a brujah is dumb, I wanted to be a malkavian, there so much fun in the pen & paper game. I liked the modern age, and the graphics are awesome. I think my space is almost up, overall, it was a pleasing game. I would buy it if you can spare a few days and nights playing it. (I almost became a vampire playing it, until it got real frustraing)

this game is pretty good. it isn't exactly the best but then again no games are. as an RPG, this game is fairly standard. the first hour or so is really boring, but once you become a vampire, things pick up rather nicely. i LOVE how you have vampiric abilities and are able to feed off whomever you see fit. this is the ultimate game for anyone who wants to live out their dream as a vampire. the story is good. the thing that i hate are the other characters in your team, maybe it's me, but the were annoying and got in the way. they didn't have terrible path finding, but they had some awkward moments. another thing that bothered me is that if you don't have control of A character, they usually go off attacking some monsters you might not be ready to attack, due to the nature of their vampiric ways or the character's build. overall, this game is fairly exciting, with something nice for lovers of RPGs and lovers of vampires.
Flawed AI brings a potentially excellent game down to average.

This game has a lot of good things going for it.
The graphics were really great for its time, and even now still look good...at least on the main characters. The story, while not great, is still far above the average for a videogame. The same can be said about the voice acting.
And probably most importantly, the game is *fun*. Or at least it starts out that way. By the time you get a 3-4 character party, the game's horrible AI and pathfinding are irritatingly obvious.
For starters, you have the choice between your allies sitting there doing nothing while you're in a fight, or them running off on their own through half the level in search of something to fight (and biting off more than they can chew and dying). Babysitting them is extremely tedious, especially when you switch to control one from running off on his own, only to have another one do the exact same thing.
Pathfinding is awful. Going around a corner and through a door and getting your entire party to go along is more difficult than any boss in the game (and some of them are fairly difficult). On top of it, your allies will buff themselves with every spell they have (consuming blood...one of the resources you have to maintain at a decent level or suffer bad consequences/death) at the sight of so much as a rat. There is an option to make it so they only auto-cast from a short list of spells (that you choose), but apparently the option is bugged and doesn't work.
In the end, I found it easier to go through a level with just one character. I left the rest behind, only using them to store equipment and for boss encounters. That's how bad it is.
It's a shame because the character advancement system is very customizeable, and I would have liked to play the game multiple times to try things different each time. However the annoying AI has sapped any replayability the game might have held.
