UO:R.. not for the weak minded

For a newcomer to the world of Ultima, this game would seem pretty boring and painstakingly hard to build up a character. But as you progress through the game, friendships are built and lessons are learned. You realize that not everyone is to be trusted and you build your character based on that sort of dependancy.

First off, there are many different towns, and 2 different facets to top it off. Personally, i'm a fan of felucca - a pvp (player vs player) oriented facet. It was the original facet of UO until more newcomers to the game began to leave the game because of tough gameplay caused by other RPers which led to the creation of Trammel - a pvm (player vs monster) world.

Second of all, the gameplay gets very monotonous. There is a limit of what's fun and what's exciting after you've seen it all.. which actually does take quite some time unless you know how to go about building a strong character quickly. That's what leads to the bad thing. You pay 10 dollars a month to have good clean fun.. but in fact, there are so many others out there that use third party programs and stuff like that to ruin your fun. If you can get around that then i'd say it'd be alright to get this game.

Of course, there is also the "reality" part of this game. You can get married, buy quite a few different types of housing, and a few ships. You can even make characters that can actually build things and sell them. It's actually kinda surprising how much a person would pay for some things.

Then there's the battle system. There are about 64 spells for the mages but the funny thing is that you would probably only use about half of them most of the time. Especially when it comes to PvP. The fun thing about spellcasting in PvP though is trying to figure out strategies and defense tactics against other mage combinations. If you're gonna get UO i strongly reccommend learning the magics of the game. As for the warriors, there are 3 main melee skills to master. Fencing, Swordsmanship, and Macing. Basically all you do is build up your skills to GrandMaster (the highest level of any skill you can go), go into attack mode, and double click on anything you want to attack.. Not much excitement there right?

Overall it's a great game. If you plan to fully enjoy this game i hope you have a connection of Cable or higher.. you're gonna be really frustrated if you try to play with a dialup connection as this game really puts a strain on your connection. Also, if you're the kind of person that will get bored from repetitive gameplay and hate rather harsh playing conditions, i suggest you go buy something else. There are a lot of things that i haven't covered because it's all just stuff you're gonna have to find out for yourself. I guess the only other downside is that you'd be paying 10 bux a month for your account. So really think before making a decision.

Hmmm... A little Overated?

I really dont like to admitt it, but I've bought this game a while back ago.

When I started playing with it, the large selection of occupation and skills were pretty impressive. When I started the game, people kept bothering me with the prize you get when you meet other players. Which was really annoying to me.

Walking around aimlessly around town and getting killed isnt fun at all! Once you die, thats it! You become an spectre, a ghost that wanders around. You get revived from a temple and start playing again. Wow! Isn't that the most fun anyone can have. Starting out in that game is not fun at all. Talk about lag, the game play was soooo choppy it wasnt even funny. Top-view is all right, for a game like Fallout or Command and Conquer. Even Heroes of Might and Magic was more imppressive than this.

Bottom of the Line - This game can be really fun if you know what you are doing, if you are a big fan of Baulders Gate, Ice Wind Dale, this would really excite you quite well.

Wow

This is essentially the same as UO the Second Age with some major, friendly changes. This game is excellent, and now very begginer friendly. The Rennaisance version includes a whole new mirror world, Trammell, where new players can learn. This game is very good for roleplayers. You can choose to be a merchant or adventurer, depending on your preference. You can own a ship or a house; the very rich can even own a castle. A very good game. Come say hi to me, Beouvle on the Catskills shard

Try UO.

I've played almost every game out there for online gaming and THIS (uo) is where it all started... thanks to this game we now have OTHER onlile games...Like it or hate it- UO is the godfather of online gaming. That said.

I've play this game longer then most people (on and off for 7 years) this game is NOT as dull as everyone thinks it is, there is SO much more then meets the eye, So much is hidden. the friends and gruops of people you will meet and get to know is amazing. Its not how GREAT the gif's are by today standereds they do suck...But its about the quality of game play and the freedeom you get from playing UO.

Enjoy.

To the person who demoted UO: Only a newbie like you would write such a review. One must actually READ the help books and ASK other people for help. Its called Healers! You go to them to get ressed. To anyone else: The old UO was better, before the new patches, yet UO is still worth buying and playing. So I invite you, anyone that is willing to spend the money on it. And if you come on Pacific, go to Brit bank, look for Ravon, I will assist you in all that you need to get started, and explain to you where the healers are. :)

If you are looking for a "Kill'em all and let God sort'em out" game, look in another spot. This isn't your type of bag baby....

Even if you're not into role playing this game is great fun. It takes patience and strategy to play this game, something that I believe is lacking in the shoot'em up, blow'em to hell games.

Great game to meet people from all over the world, and yet be able to drink a beer whilst sitting in your easy chair.....

A Must Have For Anyone Who Loves RPG's

UO is by far the best thing to happen to RPG's in the past 5 years, at least in my opinion. Renaissance is much more beginner friendly than the previous edition and access becomes simplified. Plus, the gameplay is everything one would expect from a high quality RPG. A definite must have for any RPG fan!

The game overall is quite large and intricate- but it has some flaws.
The programmers did an AWFUL job with the connection-to-actions in UO. There is almost no limit to how fast or slow you can run so there is a huge variation of movement speeds.
As for the gameplay I would consider it an "almost" ongoing process. The most "constructive" things to do gets really boring, really fast, and the fun things dont do anything constructive for you. If you have fun and is doing constructive things, chances are you're a newbie.
They say the game has an end. It does. Once you wear it out, to a new game you go. Also, the lag is horrendous. If you can make it 1 screen without a little lag stop or lockup you'll be lucky
Also there are hordes of dirty mouthes and bug exploiters out there, and the GM's dont care. They let the cheaters cheat and the fairers and squarers go on their own.
Hope it was helpful.

UO is a great roleplay!

Ultima Online is a very impressive and immersive game. There are many options available in the huge, diverse online world that this game offers. I found that I was easily able to create a character and become a part of the community with little trouble. Some of the occupations are Tailor, Carpenter, Pure Mage, Animal Tamer, Blacksmith, and many more. Plus, there are thousands of real people online all the time that you can talk to. I think Ultima Online is one of the best role play games that the computer world currently has to offer.

I have played Everquest and Earth and beyond as well as a little know game called Avalon ...Online games, yet, the detail to which Ulima Online creates a world is well beyond any other game, on or off line...Example I have a character that is a tailor. He hunts animals and prepares their hides, then sews their hides into boots, shoes and leather armor to sell....That's not all...he collects cotton from plants, wool from shearing sheep, then spins it on a wheel, uses a loom and makes the thread and yarn into cloth...dyes the cloth and sews clothes to wear or sell, everything from hats to pants to kilts and dresses, includeing cloaks. He regularly rides a horse that requires feeding and needs resting on occasion. His weapons need to be repaired by interaction with Blacksmith characters. He lives in a small tower with furniture and everything. Now thats detail! He is a Paladin and lives by the code. The detailed game play of your fantacy is also enhanced by other roleplayers in the game...such things as greeting courtesies take on a whole new meaning with characters rangeing from paladins to necromancers and the latest in player designed characters. Whether you wish to design your own characters or pick from a selection, I think you will find this game captivateing...I would, however, caution you to limit your game play...this game can be a little addicting. Enjoy!
