Best online game I have played in a long time

This game is sweet. It takes a powerful PC to run but the detail, graphics and the play control are great. The single player game has a good story line and is a good teacher for learning character control and the in's and out's of the game. However, you buy this game for the online PvP battles and the game delivers. Hundreds of servers are always available and there is nothing like a good 8 v 8 game of capture the flag in Blood Gulch....
I have read on the box that it requires a minimum of 733Mhz to run, that may be a bit optimistic. I would say nothing short of maybe a 1.3 or 1.5Ghz and lots of RAM, at least 256 megs. I have a 2.4Ghz Pentium with 768 Megs of RAM and it runs super smoothly with no lag for load time while game scenery changes.
Multiplayer has good potential, dies with bad community

Aside from the instant impression that may be put on the reader of this review that I'm reviewing this game only because of it's multiplayer, singleplayer is actually what I look for in a game. Multiplayer is just an extra to me, however, Halo was ported to the PC with online multiplayer in front of the mind (Halo for the XBOX was originally intended to have XBOX Live multiplayer abilities, but this feature never made it into the game). Halo's amazing singleplayer campaign remains untouched (which is a good thing).
If you are new to the Halo craze, the story takes place between humanity and an alliance of alien races known as the Covenant. After a narrow escape from an enemy fleet, the USNC (human alliance) ship named The Piller of Autumn finds itself at a strange ring world that the Covenant call Halo. When the ship is boarded by Covenant forces, escape pods are launched and the ships surviving crew find themselves on Halo, attempting to learn about it and uncover it's dark secrets while franticly fighting through armies of Covenant all the while.
You play as Spartan 117, known simpily as Master Chief. You are a breed of super soldier, created to turn the tide of a losing battle against the Covenant. Stronger, taller and better equiped than average marines, you are a savior on the battlefield.
The game has 10 massive levels, many with vehicles that are easy and fun to use, while at the same time, not forcing you to use them. You can jump in and out of vehicles at will. You can pick up any weapon lying around, be it human or Covenant. However, you can only carry 2 weapons at a time (not counting grenades).
You will encounter a few different species of enemy troops along the way, such as...
Grunts- Chunky little guys who don't do much damage, even if they're in groups. They do however use plasma grenades, which will kill you 100% if it sticks to you. If their forces are thinned or if the stronger unit that is leading them into battle is killed, they will usually panic which sends them running around screaming.
Elites- The backbone of Covenant forces, elites carry plasma rifles (higher ranking elites carry energy swords) and deal out a powerful melee attack. They also use an energy shield similar to yours, making them equally difficult to kill. They usually work in pairs or larger groups and can often be seen leading teams of grunts into battle
Jackels- These are back-line troops. They hide behind hand-held energy shields and fire plasma pistols at you. They can be dangerous in groups, but they tend to shoot at you while you're fighting with other enemies, and their shields are difficult to take down.
Hunters- These are huge enemies with an extreamly powerful fule-rod cannon (the only weapon you can't pick up) mounted to their arm and dish out a melee attack that sends marines flying. Their armor is impossible to penetrate, so you'll have to shoot them in their small exposed areas in between the armor plates. They are always deployed in pairs as well.
You will also encouunter another race of alien spices later in the game that even the Covenant fear.
The graphics are now better than the XBOX version (provided that your computer can run it at maximum quality). If anything, I just miss the XBOX controler... Which is why I like the XBOX version of Halo better than the PC version. With that, Halo is still everything the XBOX version was only with online multiplayer battles.
Thanks to the people who play Halo's multiplayer, however, it's not very enjoyable. I don't know what it is about Halo that causes it's online community to be mainly populated by 10 year olds who have never learned how NOT to swear in all caps every time someone kills them. That's not the worst of it though... Teamkillers. Halo's multiplayer is COMPLETLY infested with them. Every time you turn around in a team oriented battle, a teammate is shooting you in the face. If you're headed for a vehicle, you should be on the lookout for a teammate who doesn't think that you are worthy of using it... All the time. If it wasn't for this, it would be a great multiplayer game. Another problem is that they didn't add campaign 2 player co-op, which was practicly the best part of Halo (XBOX)!
So, your reasons to get this are
A) You don't have an XBOX but want to play Halo without having to spend an extra $150
B) You prefer PC FPS games to console
C) You want good multiplayer, but aren't bothered by the bad community
D) You can't stand to play a game unless it has the best possible graphical quality
Overall, Halo is hands down the best game I have every experianced (I was a huge fan when it first came out on XBOX). Though I still prefer the XBOX version, PC is still great. Compared to Call of Duty, however, the multiplayer fallsa little short, mainly because of the people who infest it's online servers.
PC Version pretty damn good

I got to play the XBOX version at a friend's house and found it to be a lot of fun, the only drawback was that I am used to playing PC games and the XBOX resolution was not great, especially when you are playing two people at once.
But the PC game is sweet -- rich graphics, sound, and extras makes improvements over the XBOX version!
Drawbacks:
- Too bad I can't have multiple gamepads on one computer and have a friend man the warthog.
- I have a good graphics card but still couldn't get good playability on higher resolution and had to settle with 1024x768, so you'll need the TOP graphics card to play high rez.
- Microsoft is involved.
Easily one of the best first person shooters of our time

It's the summer of 2001. I get an Xbox. I immediately rent 007 AUF and SSX Tricky. I kept seeing awsome reviews for Halo, but it seemed too good to be true and I didn't really care for the commercials. I beat 007 and I look at the back of the Halo box at blockbuster. I decided, "what the heck, maybe it isn't as stupid as it looks."
The menu screen was a turn-off at first. The music was starting to annoy me, too. The intro was pretty cool though. I had a very hard time with the controls, but it really is the best way to play FPSs so its best to just stick with it.
I thought going around shooting little red guys and an occasional blue dude was pretty stupid. I stil stayed with it. By the end of the second level, Halo was starting to warm up on me. The fourth level pretty much got me hooked. I loved the battle on the beach!
After that I became just another Halo lover. It was and is my favorite game mostly because i'd never played anything like it! The story was absolutly amazing, and the book added to the game alot. The graphics and sound were definately revolutionary in its time but I still gasp as the sun filters through the trees.
The multiplayer is awsome, but once you beat the single player campaign its good but not as good as the campaign. There are lots of game modes, and you can make your own. Like Goldeneye? How about Slayer, Pistols, no shields, 25% health. Just like the golden gun.
There will probably be LOTS of good mods and maps .etc after this ships. And a split-screen Co-Op mode is going to be added in an offical mod or patch. Not to mention a flame thrower, fuel rod gun, rocket-launching Warthog, the Shade stationary gun, and the banshee will all be added to the multiplayer goodness!
Time for the down-side of the game:
-No Xbox Live support, but you can still game online via XBConnect/Gamespy Tunnel.
-The game runs at 30 FPS when 60 is the Xbox norm. It can get a little choppy sometimes but this can easily be overlooked. You probably won't have to worry about this in the PC/Mac Version.
-The pistol is unbelievably good. You can drop someone from short to long range in 3 shots. Cheap!
-There is some redundancy in the levels, but your going back the way you came and it is mixed up a bit with short-cuts and vehicles. This is probably the worst part of the game. Still pretty easily overlooked.
Buy this for your PC/Mac/Xbox and if you don't like it at first STICK WITH IT! You'll be doing yourself a favor.

Imagine that armies of aliens known as "The Covenant" are attacking earth.
What would you do? Well in the game Halo you try to lead them away from earth and save the galaxy.
While doing this, your spacecraft is attacked and you crash on a ring called Halo and you are stranded on the ring until the Pillar of Autumn, your spacecraft is repared. While you are stranded you find out the secrets of Halo and what it does.
This game has plenty of characters. The human characters are Captain Keyes, the Marines, Master Chief, that is you, and the crew of the Pillar of Autumn. The Covenant characters are the Grunts, the Jackals, the Elites, and the Hunters. There is also a highly advanced AL at the heart of the Pillar of Autumn. Her name is Cortona.
This game has four powerful vehicles. It has warthogs that seat three. It has tanks that seat four. There are also ghosts and banshees that only seat one but they are the most powerful {if you know how to use them}.
This game has awesome weapons to. It has the M9He-Dpgrenade, the M6D pistol, the MA5B assault rifle, the M90 shotgun, S2 Am sniper rifle, M19 SSM rocket launcher, the M41 LAAG, and much more.
This game has plenty of multiplayer games types as well. Some examples are Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Slayer, Oddball, Race, and plenty of others.
"Halo is one of the best games in recent times," says Electronic Gamely Monthly. "Microsoft invented the Xbox so we could have games like Halo," says IGN.com. I think that Halo has excellent graphics. Some of the best I have ever seen.
If you are someone who likes action games full of surprises I highly recommend this video game for you. Now that you know about this game, don't just sit there wishing you had it. Go to a local videogame store or go on-line and buy the game. Or at least rent it.
Just a little tweaking and your ready to go...

Microsofts Halo is an excellent game. It will hold it's own
in the FPS genre. My personal favorit is still Unreal 2k3 and
Tron, but Halo is just as great. Fun game and action. The assault
vehicles are GREAT. Now my pc is on the low end of the gaming
spectrum compared the the lastest soupped up computers.
My system: Dell 8100 Dimension, 1.3Ghz P4, 330w PS, Nvidia ti4600
128mb video card. The only tweaking I had to do was download
the latest Nvidia drivers, (45.23), and I was rocking.
So don't let the negative comments about it not playing well
on some systems. Like any new FPS high end game you buy, there
are some things you need to tweak to get running just the way
you like. GO AHEAD AND BUY THE DARN GAME!
it still shines

Halo is the best game that was ever created, period.
Though some people might have problems lunching it on their system, it is because the system is NOT strong enough for that game.
Microsoft still cannot decide how much of a minimum CPU power the game requires. In the readme they put 733MHz, and on their shopping store, they put 933MHz.
To tell you the truth, it is still not enough, the minimum is somewhere in 1500MHz's. That might seem a lot to handle, and that is probably one of the reasons posting a lesser CPU value.
So if you decide to go Halo, (which I strongly recommend) make sure that it's above the 1.5GHz mark. And the more memory you have (more than 128MB) the better you'll be. So if you are running Win XP which it self requires 128MB plus the Halo 128MB then the minimum Mem for you is 256MB.
Verify that you do have that power before spending your dollar on the game. It would just be a shame to have the game and not be able to plat it without the savemode.
There are first-person shooters...and then there is Halo

The only word I can say for this game is "magnificent!" I can't quite put my finger on what makes this game better than any other first-person shooter i've played, but I do know that it's the only one I like enough to purchase. The story is given in other reviews; basically, humans are fighting a losing war against a covenant of aliens bent on eradicating us called (surprisingly) the Covenant. You play the last remaning supersoldier called Master Chief, and you're on a last-ditch mission to draw the alien forces away from Earth. The ship you're on makes a random space jump and crashes on this place called Halo. It seems to be a planet...or is it? What secrets does it hold, why are the Covenant exploring it? Play the game and find out.
This is an intelligent gamer's FPS. You have limits as to what weapons you can carry (2 at a given time) and you can only pick up ammo for the weapons you're carrying. You can only have 4 grenades (thought you can have 4 each of Marine and Covenant grenades, switching to the one when you run out of the other), and you have control of various vehicles at various points in the game. You also have the intermittent support(?) of Marines who crashed with you. Usually, they end up being cannon fodder, but they can hold their own; if you're in a Warthog (indestructible 4WD that holds you and two others), it's great to have them as gunners.
My passion is the weapons. These are for your selection, human first then Covenant
Assault Rifle: The mainstay of your armory, I view this as a steady girlfriend. You may date others and use them more, but you always return to her. It is good allround, has a max of 600 bullets with a 60 bullet clip. Relatively accurate but don't try sniping with it. I usually it as a backup. I may use the shotgun or plasma rifle as my main weapon, but this is always there.
Hand Pistol: This pistol is good for accurate shooting and taking out Hunters in their weak spots, but i haven't developed the skill for that. Aim correctly and you can kill a lot of Covenant with one shot. Flood, on the other hand...It has 120 bullets and is a single shooter. It'll do in a pinch, but I wouldn't rely on it as a main weapon.
Shotgun: Can't dodge buckshot! This is my fav weapon in the game. It has a max ammo load of 60 shells and chambers 12. It isn't good at distances, but one shot at close range will take out any bad guy except a Hunter and maybe an Elite with shielding (and 2 shots will take the Elite out). Especially good for fighting the Flood...
Rocket Launcher: Tried and true staple of all FPS, operates like all the others. You're only allowed a max of 8 rockets, and 2 per chamber, so aim well or die. For taking out vehicles and bad-asses(Ghosts, Banshees, Hunters, enemy groups, etc)
Sniper Rifle: Great zoom, nice accurate bullets, one shot one kill, great for the game, bad for multi-players. A pox on all those who win by sniping. I believe it's a 60 bullet limit there. Very effective against covenant, ineffective against flood.
Covenant weapons: Whenever possible, I recommend using these against the covenant. They seem to be more sucseptible to these than to human weapons (not that human weapons are BAD) and you can conserve your ammo better. Keep your machine gun, but use and discard Covenant guns as your main attack when dealing with covenant.
Plasma Pistol: Small energy-blast weapon that can be retrieved from bodies of defeated Covenant. It's better than fighting bare-handed, and you can charge the pistol to deliver a large burst against your enemy. Firing the weapon depletes the charge, and you cannot recharge it; once it's depleted you'll have to toss it and get something else.
Plasma Rifle: The covenant equivalent of your assault rifle, it's bigger and more powerful than the plasma pistol. It doesn't do the charge-release attack like the pistol, and must be fired in moderation lest it overheats. A good primary weapon when facing the Covenant. As its smaller cousin, it depletes with firing and cannot be recharged.
Needler: This weapon fires needles which home into and stick onto your targets, and then explodes. The needles bounce off shields and Hunter armor, but it's a decent weapon overall. You can get ammunition for it. You can have a max of 80 needles, and the weapon holds 20.
more can be said, but look it up yourself. This is a good game and I recomemnd it wholeheartedly.
THANK YOU MICROSOFT

THIS GAME ROCKS. Now if your the medal of honor allied assault kinda guy that doesn't care about story line, THEN DONT'T BUY THIS GAME (not that i have anything against MOHAA). But if your the kinda guy that likes a great story from the begining, and with exciting twists after each mission, THEN GO GET THIS GAME NOW. And if your looking for a good multiplayer game, then this game will satisfy you in every way. But, this game does lag tremendously, but you get used to it for a while. My comp is a 256mb ram, 64mb grafhics card, pentium 4 average computer. so this game doesn't have very high requirments. BUT, on my comp, THIS GAME FREEZES. It sucks, but then again my comp isn't very exactly up to date. overall this game is very good, and i highly recomend it. SO THANK YOU MICROSOFT for bringing a game like this to the pc. i don't have and xbox,ps2, or a gc. SO THIS WAS A DREAM COME TRUE TO ME. BUY THIS GAME.
This is it? We wait for TWO years and this is all you can give us!?

Halo, the game is one of the main reasons the xbox did so well on the console market. All I have ever heard from most of my friends was "halo, halo 2..," so when I finally get my hands on the PC version of the game, I thought that I was going to be in for one of the most extreme and best experiences in game history. That's not really what happened.
Graphics. This game is showing its age, it was made in 2001!
Sound. This sound is amazing, the sound director certainly did his job.
Gameplay. Ahh, well, yes the AI does give you a great experience, it wears off quickly, it's not helped by the fact that the levels are very repetitive. The enemies you fight are either the Covanent or the Flood, that's it, 9 different enemies. Well the gameplay was not everything I was told.
Plot. Great story, nothing more to be said.
Multiplay. Yeah, its fun, but it doesn't live up to my expectations from the 6th best game of all time.
Replay. You may decide to occasionally hop into multiplayer, or play the campaign with a friend, but that is it.
Sorry, Halo fans, but on the PC, halo doesn't really hold up to the high expectation, especially when it was released two years after the xbox version. It would have faired better if it was released at the same time.
On the PC, halo is crushed by opposition like Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor. That concludes the review, I am going to go play Unreal Tournament 2004.
Graphics 5/10
Sound 10/10
Gameplay 7/10
Plot 9/10
Multiplay 7/10
Replay 6/10
Stability: On the second to last level I experienced some serious graphical corruption, and after that the game messed up by graphics driver
Overall 6/10 - Passable (Sorry)
