OK for Beginners -- very anti-German

I got this game for a Christmas gift. I thought it would be a nice addition to all my Panzer General, etc. type games: WRONG. The game is pretty unique with its real-time movement and the confusion of all those units moving and firing, but the game is very unrealistic and prejudiced against the German forces. Imagine fighting the Blitzkrieg in the early 1940's with no artillery (you have to steal the enemy's guns) and no Stuka bombers (one of the mainstays of the Blitzkrieg)! I was sorely disappointed because I prefer the German side in these games because of the lack of resources, but their dependency on initiave and ingenuity. If you prefer only the Allies and you want to win big every time over an easy, severely handicapped Axis opponent, especially as the Russians (note the heavy influence of Russian names listed in the credits in the back of the book), then you will LOVE this game.
Since I already have the first game I will try the SS Forever in hopes that it will be more realistic! But, in my opinion, this game is only for beginners and those unfamiliar with the actual WWII struggle.

This game is what I've been waiting for. A game with excellent graphics, in real time, with a touch a realism. The designers must have a sense of humour too for if you watch carefully you will see infantry units smoke, sing etc when they standing around awaiting orders. All units are beautifully recreated from snipers to King Tigers.
You can play set missions or campaigns as either the Germans, Russians or Allies. My gripe here is that there is no carry over of units in the campaigns so you can't build up veteran experienced units which can be seen in say 'Panzer General'. Also seeing B17 bombers used as low level tactical bombers seems a little absurd and artillery is excessively devasting. However, I don't think you will ever find a perfect game.
Be warned this game cannot be played like Command & Conquer for if you do you will probably lose. You have to apply strategy, tactics and above all reconnaissance otherwise be prepared for heavy losses. You will have to learn the advantages and disadvantages of each particular unit type to make full use of them.
I found there was a bit of a learning curve involved with this game and the instruction book is too lightweight to be of much use. There is however great hints, tips and even walkthroughs at the relevant website...
Overall, a very enjoyable game and highly recommended if you have an interest in World War II.
This is not the WWII version of AOE II!

No building up your civilization and no way to get new soldiers once they are killed. Not even close to the level of AOE II.

If you are used to getting all the units you want in order to win your missions rushing through enemy ines, stay away from this game. if you are used to self-moving, out-of-scale war machines, stay away. if you are used to not think about tactics, stay away from this game. if you are used to win easily and without effort, you are either very good, or just stay away from this game.
if none of the above refers to you, buy the game, get trained in singleplayer, and play this game online. no other game i have ever played beats this game in multiplayer. giant maps, with up to 12 players, hundreds of units you can manage individually or in groups, sophisticated tactical possibilities, and real-time-battle. my alltime favourite, really. and the best of all: rushers and campers never win against good tactics. but thats probably why most of us-americans do not like this game. it's maybe a little bit too complex for fast-food-minds.
see you all on th battlefield. Sun Tzu

Sudden Strike is a fun and realistic game. It might be hard for a lot of you, but it's still fun. A bit of advise about this game--even though I gave this 5 stars, don't let this be your first stategy game. You need experience in stategy games. A good first one is Red Alert 2. I'm NOT saying don't buy this, because this is realy a "Excellent" game.

---If this game had an expansion in which you could build structures and train units, this game would be the bomb.---
However thats not going to happen. I appreciate the reality of it being that, in war, you have a certain amount of men to accomplish something with and thats it. However in this game, it makes it way too difficult.
I found the graphics to be over the top and the maps truely realistic. The units were detailed nicely. Thumbs up to the artists. Thumbs DOWN to whoever combined the fog of war to initial enemy placement and their AI. Hell, even on easy and the first mission map, my guys were getting wiped out no matter which direction I wanted to send them. I would send a few tanks into the fog of war, so I could start getting a better view of the map. Instead of gaining intelligence on enemy placement, I start getting shot out of view and having grenades and missles obliterate the tanks in a mere 2 seconds. I cant counter attack, because the fog of war doesnt disappear when Im being attacked. This was a HUGE frustrator. No matter how fast I would try to mobilize my troops and get a plan going, I was being invaded by the enemy and blown to bits in a matter of minutes. Im not a cheater at heart, but I think I will retry this game with the cheat that lifts the fog of war, just so I can accomplish some of the missions. This by far was not my first RTS game. I am quite excellent at C&C 1 and 2, etc.
Maybe if they toned down enemy firepower or at least lifted the fog of war when your being attacked, or give you triple visibility when revealing new areas, the game could be more tolerable. But, for the simple fact that difficulty and fog of war impede gameplay, this game gets 2 stars instead of its well deserving 5 for graphics alone.
I would suggest the new title Real War over this one.

This game is great it has strtegic depth and has lots of cool animation. One flaw I found is that there is no random map maker but that does not even upset this game. There is plenty of fun to be had so if you want a great rts game buy this its really cool.
Realistic, kind of funny, and full of action

Go from The Battle of the Bulge to the bloody invasion of normandy. There is many Countries to play as and each has its own forces. The graphics are realy great and the game is realy realistic. Machine are weak against tanks and unlike the c&c games the tanks can actually kill troops!!!!!

I purchased this product expecting what the photo was alluding to. The product i recieved was only Sudden Strike, The first one. The photo as you can see has Sudden Strike, Sudden Strike Forever, and Sudden Strike II. So if you want the anthology... dont buy this.
