As an incurable Trekker who loves all things Star Trek I purchased this game thinking it would be lots of fun to play, but found it extrememly limiting. One has to be quite computer savvy to close applications to get it to work marginally faster than snail pace. Although I have a brand new computer with a great processor, large hard drive and lots of memory and all the 'bells and whistles' I found this game 'eats' so much memory that it takes forever to get your ship across the quadrant. It certainly is a game where you can cook dinner, do the laundry and shop for groceries while your ship and crew fly the 'deep space' mission and still arrive back in time to make the important decisions about where you're going to send the crew next. The 'still' graphics are okay but the 'animation'is pitiful. The one great feature is the sound effects and the Star Trek music. After you've run through all the pre-set missions there's 'nothing new on the horizon'. I'm not into programming so that was the end of the game as I couldn't compose my own missions. I found it was a nighmare trying to 'make' my own crew by importing images and bios and finally gave up in frustration. There's no scope for upgrading your ship beyond the 'default' specifications so some missions are doomed to be failures from the start as not all 'fleet' ships are capable of successfully completing all the missions. Once the missions are complete (flown) there's only one word I can think of to describe this game ... Boring!

Save your money, this game is a dog. It couldn't carry A1's lunch-box. If you liked Armada 1, you will really be shocked at how bad this game is. It reeks from top to bottom...
TOOOOOO good

this is going to be the best star trek & stratigy game out and that is before it is finnished so just think what is will be like when it is. i've seen a heck of a lot of pics and data on this game and if anyone out there thought Armada 1 was good well i say this is 100 times better and with a 3D battle field, ships, stations, nebulae and planets what else could you ask for in a game {dont answer ;p }.
this is a must for stratigy fans as well as star trek fans

This game is the perfected version of the original Star Trek Armada! It's so great to get away from games such as starcraft and age of empires whose graphics are really two dimentional. in tactical mode you can view a ship from all angles and the battles in this view are spectacular! apart from that, new resources to gather adds another element to the original game. the borg tactical fusion cube is absolutely awsome. it is also nice to get away from equal races. yes, much is the same between races, yet much is different. this game truely stands on its own without the star trek name to hold it up. it is finally a game that can give a better name to the rather unsuccessful star trek gaming industry. the original is great, but in this case the sequel is far better.
the best Star Trek game yet!

The graphics are unbelivable and the battles are very realistic. A Star Trek gamer or not you will love this game. If I walked in and saw someone battling, I would think it was a Star Trek eposiode! It is great.
No good if it doesn't work on your computer.

This game will not work on newer computers. Even though tech support sent directions to allow me to play the game it still didn't work.
Vast improvement over Armada 1.

Positives:
Armada 2 is a vast improvement over Armada 1. Most important, the campaigns, instant action and multiplayer have run without a single hitch. I have encountered no bugs.
The greatest in-game improvement, hands down, is the new interface. Terrific grpahics and very intuitive interface make this game a hoot to play.
The expanded selection of ships and wonderful new Borg and Species 8472 designs mean that the species actually play differently (especially the Borg).
Also notable is the voical talent of Alice Krige, the voice of the Borg Queen, who manages to be seductive and creepy at the same time. It seems she didn't just read the lines off the page (think Patrick Stewart), but that she actually acted. And very, very well.
Negatives:
Although pretty to look at and a cinch to control, where is the strategy? A battleship with special technology lasts about three seconds in combat. The player who wins does so by throwing huge number of ships at you. I would have much preferred fewer resources neccessitating fewer ships (that don't die so easily). That way the loss of a starbase or fleet would actually mean something. As it is, the game is essentialy build, move and watch a (short) fight.
The terrific interface has one downside--because everything is so automated, there isn't much to really do. I felt like a spectator rather than a participant. Still, the game is so attractive it can still be fun to watch.
Unit balancing. The units are too balanced. I hear people complaining about unequal balancing, but here a Sovereign can beat two Cubes. I realize it's a game and not the show, but the game feels so balanced, it becomes impersonal.

Yes to some degree I was disapointed, however I have always had my doubts about a 3D RTS game. Think about it, its pretty tough to pull off. Activision probably did the best that can be done (Unless someone can inform me of a game that does it better)
Second, I would like to resond to the comments on ships being to fragile. That the smaller ships are rendered useless against larger ships. What I want is for anyone who says that to play me in a game and see how effective your handfull of cubes would be against over 100 sabres (which can be produced in under ten minutes from the start of the game). In my opinion smaller ships have the advantage over larger ships. In this game they have capped the officer level at 800, which severly limits the amount of battleships one can build. Not only that but the largest ship you can build now requires more technology before you can build them. And in regards to the fact that the ships in general are "made of paper," there is a new station that allows upgrade in shields, weapons, engines, etc... (trying reading the manual...it helps)
On to the diffuculty level, in Armada 1 before the 2nd upgrade I was able to take on 3 allied hard computers easily. When they came out with the upgrade i couldn't do it anymore. The reason for this is that they made the computers more powerful by giving them faster build rates and less production costs. Armada 2 provides the player with the option of both an easier game and a harder game. For the beginners who find it difficult to keep up with fast computers, a slower build rate and high costs for the computer can be set. And vice versa, if you are a "trained vetran" you can set them to the opposite. This effectivly allows the player to customize the difficulty level to his or her own playing skill. (One suggestion for those of you who want a challenge, try playing a borg hard opponent with these setting set to the hardest level. All I can say is wow! Have fun with that one)
The single player portion of the game was rather dissapointing. The plot (so far) is not as involved as Armada 1, I liked the Omega Particle idea, and from what I have seen so far the plot has not intrigued me. Also I wish they had made single player missions for the other 3 races: romulan, cardassian, and species 8472. Maybe and expansion would be in order (hint, hint Activision lol)
All in all I enjoyed this game, the graphics are very well done, the new races, ships, and technology provide more stratagy options. Thanks Activision and keep up the good work.

I recently ordered Star Trek Elite Force 2 and from what I have learned the game will include brand new weapons, never before seen, more holomatches on holodeck, and of coarse- what we have been waiting for-Roaming mode, where you can walk the Enterprise vessel controling all that happens, and interacting with Members on the ship. I own Star Trek: Voyager Collectors edition and I know the graphics are very nice...but with Elite Force 2 the graphics look almost like a humanlike movie. Even if you dont watch Enterprise on UPN every Wednesday night at 9pm you will enjoy this game.

THIS IS THE BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! And belive it or not, I HATE star trek. My friend convinced me to try it for a minute. And I played it for an hour. The graphics are completely outstanding! There are tons of different guns and this something called a holodeck is awesome. you can play awesome games on it. The storyline is great and the levels are awesome, from destroyed hulls of a spaceship, to mercenary spacestations, to frozen military bases on a mountain, to harsh volcanic planets, and you get to fight all these awesome alien things. I THINK THIS GAME AT LEAST COMPARES WITH GRANDTHEFT AUTO VICE CITY! And you have to be crazy, or it has to be an absolutly fabulous game! ( the answer is the latter one) Get it! You won't regret it.
