WARNING:IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS XP!!!

WARNING: Holiday season is upon us - The DVD version of this game (RIVEN) as well as its sequals EXILE and MYST do not work with Windows XP especially if you have Quicktime 3.0 or higher. We contacted the company though thier website and they have no intention of upgrading or providing drivers for said games to accomodate users. By their own suggestion at CYAN and RED-ORB and PRESTO is if you have purchased these games and they do not work take them back to the store and see if you can get your money back. Unless the compatibilty with any game produced by this company specifically says it is XP compatible DO NOT PURCHASE IT> Thanks

The Best! This is a game that keeps you wanting more.

Riven is a game that is as maddening as it is fun. This game has so many twists and turns that you really need to take notes just to stay on top of the mystery. You actually participate in the action around you, and getting to the end is a rush the player(you) will never forget.

Not for the weak of mind...

Now this is what I call a game. No need here for senseless mindless violence to keep you entertained. Riven demands that you use your mind. It is an exquisite experience, visually beautiful and brilliantly executed. The rides from island to island were worth the price of the game for me. Both Myst and Riven are in a class by themselves. I cannot begin to thank the creators of both these games enough. If you want to use your intelligence and your imagination as fully as possible, and have a wonderful time doing so,do yourself a good turn, and get Riven.

atmospheric excellence

Yes, the graphics, music and puzzles are engaging. I've never experienced anything like them. What really sets Riven apart from other games, though, in my opinion, is the eerie and magical feeling that the combination of these elements invoke starting with the very first scene. It may make you a little melancholy when you finally have to leave it behind.

Riven- There is NOTHING else like it!

This game is ABSOLUTELY TOP DOG, Hands Down! I truly enjoyed the ethereal, alien-like worlds that can be explored as well as the intricate puzzles that make you WANT to go further. The storyline is captivating, and the graphics are stunning. I was automatically immersed into the plot and became mesmerized by everything that there is to explore and to find. What an escape from everyday life here on Earth! I had thought I was thrilled when I played Myst, but now I am just overwhelmed by all that is RIVEN! This game is definitely THE BEST of ALL time and I am hoping against all hope that somewhere out there in software land, game developers are doing what they can to try and create a game that will top this one....thats the game that I would sell my soul to play!

The Ages of Myst live on......

I played and conquered Myst and Riven about a year and a half ago but I still find myself exploring their worlds for just pur fun. Their beautiful landscapes and enchanting creatures keep me entertained for hours on end. I even love the imaginative music used(so much that I bought the soundtrack).

When I had completed the games I felt like I had achieved a monumental task(which is true if you've played the games to the end), but enventually I felt some sorrow that it had all ended. I felt as if I still didn't know the entire story, which I didn't. So I bought the Myst novels to learn everything I could about the D'ni civilization.....they helped tremendously. It still wasn't enough. I wanted more.

I just discovered that Mattel and Presto Studios have pikced up where Cyan left off. A new follow-up to Riven will be released early next year tilted Myst 3: Exile. You'll have to check out the website(myst3.com) to get the latest information. If you've enjoyed the games as much as I have then this will be an answered prayer.

For those of you who haven't completed Riven yet, don't give up....it's the best experience.

Absolutely the best age ever written

Hi. I am one of the biggest riven fans. I have played the game, read the books, seen the websites,(made my own) and decorated my room to look like a rivenese temple. Everyday I email my Riven friends on the Riven Lyst, and I play it in my free time. Riven is way way better than Myst. Myst is the second greatest game in gaming history (it used to be the first). Riven has one of those long deep stories that you can discover along the way. The creators worked really hard on this game and you can tell. Every little thing has a cool texture and sound. Every animation is watchable over and over. The puzzles are fascinating, and you must venture all over the place to find the answer. The characters are great! I loved the acting, especially by John Keston, who plays Gehn. The endings are fantastic! Once you finish, you can try to find out other ways to end it. "mAybe I'll try this." you might say, "I bet they haven't thought than anyone would try it", and Lo and behold, there you have Gehn laughing at you for your stupidness and the credits come on. The music is very listenable, unlike in Myst, when they played the same thing over and over again as you walked into the same room, Riven has different music each time and the music is great!(My favorite is when the credits are playing) If you liked Myst, you are sure to like Riven. Ever noticed how Myst seemed kind of random, not everything was tied together? Well, Riven has things tied together, special symbols throughout, and you must venture deep into the plot and history to see what really happened. Read the journals. They are very helpful. Learn the numbering system, the animal life, the language as you go along.

A bigger, tougher, and superior sequel

Unlike movie sequels, game sequels are often better than the originals, and Riven is a prime example. The graphics are a huge step up from Myst, something I once thought impossible. There are also a lot more characters, eliminating the perpetual loneliness of Myst. The story has also become deeper and more complicated.

At the end of Myst, Atrus said he was fighting a foe much more dangerous than his sons could ever hope to be. Here, that foe is revealed to be his father, Gehn. 30 years ago, Atrus realized the immorality of his father's thinking; he believed that ages and everything in them, including the people, were his creations and his property with which to do whatever he pleased. Atrus managed to destroy all the linking books on Gehn's fifth age, called Riven by its inhabitants, while Gehn was there, effectively trapping him. Now, Gehn is on the verge of escaping Riven, which is about to enter an Armeggedon that all of Gehn's ages eventually entered. Also, Atrus' wife Catherine, is imprisoned somewhere on Riven. Atrus must constantly write in his Riven linking book to stall the end of the age, and therefore cannot enter it. Your mission is to enter Riven and rescue Catherine, relocate the natives, and trap Gehn in a book similar to the ones Sirrus and Achenar were trapped in. The situation is complicated further by the theft of the trap book immediately after your arrival. I'll let you figure out the rest on your own.

The downside of Riven is its complexity. While the puzzles in Myst were all logical and not too easy but not too hard, in Riven they are fiendishly difficult. The final puzzle to solve before confronting Gehn is just about impossible to solve on your own, and I, like many others, was forced to look at a strategy guide. However, don't be put off by this. It's still a great game, and a must have for fans of Myst.

Astounding game, not for every one though.

Althogh I've never played this game's predecessor, Myst, I know enough about it's story to say this this game is awesome. I first recieved it from my aunt when I was 10 years old, I guess in the Christmas of '98. At the time I thought it was a great game but I lacked the intellect and attention span to really take a shot at beating it. Now i'm 15 and I started playing again and i'm still amazed 5 years later. Though I haven't beaten the game yet I've gotten really far(I think...). The puzzles are ridiculously hard but once you crack one you feel a sense of pride and discovery. The puzzles are also awesome because you either find something new or even if you don't, you know that something that will progress you to the end will have happened. The graphics are insanely good, mostly becuase its only a big bunching of snapshots, but everthing else makes up for it, the animations are like watching a movie. The number system on this game isn't so hard until you read Atrus' father's jounal and realize that the code in it contains numbers that arent directly accesible and you have to find out how the numbers themselves work. When I figured it I was ecstatic. All in all, this game is great but for people with short attention spans dont even think about this game, you wont like it. Bottom line: Great graphics, great story, great sound, great music, great puzzles, GREAT GAME!

The best adventure game ever!

Okay, I'll admit it but I am not much of a myst fan. Because the graphics were bad and rather boring, I really didn't enjoy the hit myst game. But Riven is different. It boasts beautiful graphics and sound and very hard gameplay. I never would have won the game if it hadn't been for the strategy guide to help me. There are many D'ni numbers symbols which you have to recognise. Recognising how islands represent grid patterns is another puzzle. The many Ages you must explore are beautifully rendered and feature real graphics and interesting worlds with a dark secret behind them. I've heard that Myst3 is coming out soon. I hope that it will be as fun and exciting as Riven:the Sequel to Myst.
