It's a fun game for the most part.
Being a games journalist I come across a lot of video games on a daily basis. So playing a game like this was a bit refreshing -- insofar that it managed to spark and retain the interest of the gamer. All too often most developers get lazy with keeping the pace and entertainment values high, but that certainly didn't happen with this game.
Graphically True Crime looks terrible. Easily it's not the best looking Xbox game. But the numerous missions and non-loading make for an enjoyable, Mature-oriented experience.
A perfect cousin to GTA

Last week, I bought both the GTA double pack and True crime:Streets of LA.I enjoy them both greatly.I don't really think you can compare the two except on cruising with a great soundtrack;but with the street crimes, even that's different. One great thing is the voice talent, I mean what other game can boast Christopher Walken, and other big names. It's proof that you can have decent voice talent, not like some cheesy Resident evil script that even an adult movie would reject. The driving/fighting/shooting skills do take a while to master and stay alive, but it's like one of the games you call, easy to learn, long time to master.I would say buy both True Crime and GTA. I mean both are great games, and different enough to warrant getting both games. It is a lengthy game with great replay value, so that's another bonus.

I have nearly finished the game, and it is indeed a fun game to play. One plays as Nick Kang, a rogue cop that gets things done around L.A. The graphics is fairly decent, better than Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, but the kicker comes in the fact that there are still many, many collision bugs and on occasion, the graphics chug. For instance, one time, my car actually got stuck in the ground literally! Another instance was that Nick Kang went through the wall during a stealth mission. The controls are okay, but they are not great. For fighting sequences, generally button-mashing gets the job done (think Enter the Matrix here). For shooting sequences, however, the great fault lies in the fact that sometimes Nick gets pulled into zoom-in sequences when you don't want it. Lastly, sometimes, Nick suffers a tremendous delay in reaction, which results in him receiving damage.
Now onto the good parts...The story is well-done, and because of their development of the character Nick Kang, one can actually sympathize with him. The branching storyline is excecuted fairly, but I wish that it was much more fluid (aka Deus Ex or Grand Theft Auto: Vice City). The cinematics is like actually watching an old-school Jackie Chan flick. The inclusion of a street map is great! I wish that The Getaway offered such a counterpart. Lastly, the multiple varieties of cars and crimes offer good diversions.
Overall, this game is okay, but Activision needs several improvements in gameplay and controls. This is a game where rental may be needed before purchase.
Very good game

I would like to say i have been waiting since febuary for this game. When i got it i was very pleased. The only problem is that there are hardly any cars. Theres about 20. GTA 3 has only 50 and Vice city has about 120. The cars in true crime are okay but the damage moddling sucks. The Winshield looks amazing becasue when you crash. It never breaks the same way. but when you crash. No damage is done on the front or the back. But anyway it is a very good game. You have to get it.

So, if you like GTA I can't guarantee you'll like this, but it's still a fun game. The graphics are pretty much the same as The Getaway. Anyway, you're playing the character of an annoying Asian guy who's mean as hell and somehow passed the psych evaluation test to become a cop. The game is definately a knock-off on the whole GTA series, yet it's not as addictive or fun. The gameplay isn't really a freeroaming thing, it's set up like The Getaway with levels where you can free roam, but you have a certain place to be, you just don't have to go there, which is what I prefer to do. Since you're a cop, random crimes will pop up on the map such as, rape, gunfights, carjacks, illegal street racing. These are the most fun since you are free to do what you want when dealing with these crimes. A car chase might lead to a wreck, and then you'll be chasing the perpetrator on foot down the sidewaks as he shoots back at you hitting innocent pedestrians making the police experience very entertaining. There's different ways you can deal with criminals, such as holding up your badge. They might drop their guns, but if they've already downed a few uniform cops they'll probably ignore it, or run. You can also take your guns out and shoot a warning shot into the air. At this they'll either break into a run or surrender. One interesting and innovative feature is that while driving you are able to shoot out of the window ahead of your car at the car you're chasing. This usually leads to popping the tires, and then going for the gas tank. Also, for in-car and on-foot fighting you can use bullet time to focus as the fighting is pretty fast and it's easy to get quickly shot to death. One of the gimmicks of this game was that it was a fighting, shooting, and driving game. I'd have to say the worst would be the fighting mode, since it's just too annoying during the story mode. You could just pull out your guns and shoot the people, yet you are forced to fight them. One of these instances is a very pointless fight in a hobo house with hobos that are harder to fight than your brother who knows kung-fu. The driving is probbly the second worse, since it's so unrealistic. I heard that the damage would be really realistic, yet when you hit a tree you don't even slow down. It just fades away. The shooting is really cool though, since you can go to a semi-first-person mode with bullettime, and aim at a person possibly just disabling them instead of killing them outright. Well, the game would be at my house if it was cheap, but it really isn't. This XBOX version lets you put in your songs, and it is actually cool to hear your music play at random during fights and driving. Buy at your own risk, I take no responsibility.

Since GTA3's massive success, many games developers have tried to emulate it by relesing very similar games, often relying on controversy to sell it. True Crime was different in that you actually play a cop, but the same free roaming city was on offer, and you can also frequently break the law. Like all the copycat GTA games though, Activision completely missed the point with this, and it turns out to be a pretty average game.
The missions are fairly interesting, rather like GTA they vary from very good to boring, however whereas in GTA, the missions are almost a side show to everything else you can do, on True Crime that is practically all you can do. Other than missions you can arrest criminals and stuff like that, but it's repetitive and quickly becomes tiresome. The main problem is the city itself, though it is massive on a similar scale to San Andreas, there is nothing to do in it. It may well be an accurate model of LA, but unlike San Andreas, it doesn't feel like a living breathing city. In Grand Theft Auto games you can play for months and still find new stuff, here there is no interaction with people, and no buildings to go in, plus all the areas look similar for miles on end.
The plot is standard fare, you play a slightly maverick cop, who isn't afraid to bend the rules to get results, he also has revenge on his mind, so far so cliched. It continues like this until a ridiculous turn in the plot later on, involving the supernatural, I won't spoil it, but it is a bit stupid. Despite the criticism i've given so far, True Crime is a decent game, you could happily pass a few days playing this, just don't expect anything on a GTA level.
nice job music sucks though

when true crime first came out i quickly rushed to get it. i had seen a lot of screen shots and heard a lot of things from this game so naturally i bought it as soon as it came out. but when i got home to play it the first thing i noticed was the soundtrack. it was jam packed full of nothing but mindless rap music. nothing but rappers only two or three good songs from bands like the deftones and unloco but other then taht nothing but rap. so i found it fortuate that i purchased the xbox version. the game was good the stealth missions were nice but the only thing was the frustrating hand to hand combat that got annoying. it was made too difficult and i only got passed it by sheer luck. but other then that the game makes for a nice version of GTA not to be compared becasue this game is great in its own leauge
Good for what it is...

True Crime is very good for what it is, GTA for LA. As a parent, I think the language and theme is a little aggressive for my children but as an older gamer I enjoy the sights and sounds of LA as much as anyone. I don't recommend this to folks who are not ready to brawl in strip clubs or open fire on pimps. I do recommend this game to those who really like the free play feel of GTA with nice graphics and in a city we all know and love...
Controls are ok, graphics are great, soundtrack is great. I've just picked up the GTA double pack which looks a little better than on xbox than the PC version that I've played before. I think True Crime is a good update to GTA and worth getting if you want the same style of play but from the Cop side of the spectrum.
A solid game in it's own right

The best thing about this one is the combination of fighter/shooter/driving action and various story lines depending on the success or failure of the previous mission. While much is made of the expansive city environment, the game doesn't really take advantage of the environments in the missions as well as GTA, and the timed driving missions in true crime seem completely arbitrary.
The main character Nik Kang, rivals Tommy Vercetti as the classic video game character for the twenty first century, with one important advantage. A karate expert, Nik is a smart-alek cop with Asian-american heritage and badd-ass karate moves.
Another advantage over the GTA series has to be in the soundtrack and customization music feature, where you can mix soundtrack tracks with your burned tracks from the Xbox hard drive. The game plays the selected tracks randomly. But when will a game let you leave the car radio on after you get out so you can blast tunes and kick ass at the same time?
Question to people who object to fantasy monsters in True Crime: Did you complain because there were no donkeys in Donkey Kong?
Good game but not enough

I really loved this game but the only thing is that it is too short. The gameplay is somewhat challenging with an enthrawling storyline. I just wish there was more to it. I would have given this game five stars if it was more difficult and longer. As for the replayability there isn't much there. Once you've beaten the game you don't want to pick it up and play it again. There isn't enough side quests or action in just free balling it. In short this game is everything GTA Vice City hoped to be except that it is way way way too short and needs to be more challenging.
