GTA this is not....

...this is no GTA, SO STOP COMPARING IT. Games should be reviewed on how good they are, not compared to other games, so this is the last time GTA (see its over now) should be mentioned. You are an ex cop on some special crime busting team. You can do the missions to crack down on crime or you can respond to regular 911 calls (Cops any one?) such as domestics, muggings, robberies etc. Instead of offing anyone you see, you must arrest them (unless you getting shot at, then cap em). This game is a lot of fun, and I reccomend it to anyone whos a driving, fighting, shooting, or police fan.

Not as good as all of the hype

Having played GTA I was very much looking forward to the release of True Crime: Streets of LA. The game itself is a little bit of a letdown as it seems to drag quite a bit in places. The driving portions are fairly fun, esp. when it is part of a high speed chase. However, the driving does get old after a while, and I found myself pursuing less and less of the street crime as the game went on. Also, the controls for Nick when walking seem a little ... odd. The default setting has you pushing the right thumbstick to the left to turn Nick right? Why? You get used to it after a while but it is initially pretty frustrating during foot chases. Also, wait until you try to play a game with Halo-like controls after this -- it will take you at least 1/2 hr. to readjust. The gunplay isn't bad, esp. at the shield /skill sessions where you can upgrade you skills. That seems to work relatively well.

That's really it for the good stuff, so now the bad. The game is extremely redundant to the point that it's annoying. You will see the same people, cars, and buildings over and over and OVER again, and sometimes this happens on the same street. The things that pedestrians say to you are pretty lame, too; count how many time you hear someone say "Aw shiznit. Aw diggity-damn" when there is a gunfight very nearby. Also, I think that this game is virtually devoid of any AI. The people trying to kill you (either in gun or fistfights) do the same things repeatedly. Even in the midst of a brutal gun battle on the street, people and cars that are less than 1/2 a block away from the action just walk / drive along like nothing is happening just a few feet up the road. However, I think that the worst aspect of this game is the graphics, which are really pretty subpar for XBOX. Here is just a short list of the things that I have noticed:
* Sometimes pedestrians are walking slanted to the ground on hills (instead of straight up)
* A couple times, Nick ran straight thought a conrete wall while chasing a crook, and there was no damage to either Nick or the wall!
* Body / car parts will frequently jut though solid walls (but we've seen this before, haven't we?)
* After a gun battle, you will frequently see bullet-holes floating in midair.
* I have seen Nick frisk or cuff a criminal while standing at least 5 ft. away from him.
* The character's faces, esp. mouth movement, are just terrible during cut scenes.

Overall, the game is weak. Wait until you get to mission 6 where you are in the tunnels beneath Chinatown. I won't give it all away, but I will leave you with a few hints: zombies, fire-head demons (a la Doom), giant fire dragon, and flaming ninja chics. Yes, these things are actually in a game called "True Crime". Also, almost every mission follows these steps: drive to scene, engage in fistfight, chase perp on foot or in car, tail a different perp from the 1st scene to next scene, follow him to the next scene, engage in 2-3 rounds of gunplay, bonus cruizin'. In every mission this happens! I think that this game must have been pushed very hard for a quick release to coincide with the GTA release on XBOX. The developers were sloppy, and they clearly ran out of ideas along the way.

All in all, the game is very mildly entertaining but nowhere near as good as GTA. Buy that for XBOX or the new Rainbow 6 game.

Over-hyped

I had this game on pre-order for months because the demo, background info and different avenues of gameplay and interaction made it look highly impressive and seriously engaging. Such an anti-climax. Why do games always look so much better in the promotional shots, demos and magazine previews? Because, of course, they want you to buy this game thinking it's 'better' or at least in the same league as Grand Theft Auto. One of the top selling video game titles of all time and one of the coolest and most fun games out there. It's actually a great deal different to GTA. There's other areas of game action including stealth missions, 80s/early 90s retro-style arcade combo-fighting, shooting and street patrol. It is fun for a while but it sure becomes repetitive and resctrictive when most of the missions are very similar just in a different scenario. The driving is the main thing you do in the game and it really sucks when you need to speed like crazy, you spin, burnout and crash but you actually lose points for hitting pedestrains - which makes sense 'cause you're a cop... But seriously, sometimes it can't be avoided, and where's the fun in actually 'not' being allowed to hit people?
The graphics are of original Playstation quality, 3D but in a thin-layered, blocky way. The animation is also of quite poor quality. They could've done a lot more to enhance the outdoor environment, the horizon, the weather, time-of-day, lighting effects and the textures (especially the roads, signs and plants). The buildings all look practically the same in toy-like/box-like appearance lacking individual structure and intricate detail. You'll pass the same looking cars and people over and over. They also could've given better effects to improve the sense of speed and more theatre and characterisation with the city-dwellers and crims. I like the custom soundtrack option though. I thought the original track listing offered too much funk and hip-hop but not enough electro, tech, hard trance, NRG or even alternative and metal tracks all of which are ideal for cruising, car chases and mass destruction.
The fighting is fun to watch and there's a certain devilish satisfaction with the bone-crunching grab'n'throw and finishing combos. When you're fighting a group, it looks a bit unrealistic how the others move about whilst you're fighting someone else. The controls are frustrating and difficult to maneuver - or that might just be the inconsistent pace and level of interaction. However, the fighting does look like a clever satire of typical LA cop clean-up-the-streets type thing like you see on many late-night corny B-grade TV shows. This whole game is practically a parody of that whole outdated mindless stereotypical form of entertainment, and it works well.
Generally, this is a fun game with a short life. You could play to the point it becomes increasingly harder but by that stage you'd start to knit-pick at the flaws and lifelessness. I did like this game to a degree but I feel it's the sort of game which will improve if/when the sequel comes out. I understand that they pushed back the release date for further finishing touches and tests, but I'm not so sure the original release date should've been confirmed so soon when this rendition doesn't really do much justice to such an interesting concept and variety of gameplay with great potential. It also won't get very far if it is always compared to GTA.

Good Game Play , but way way way to short

The game is quite good and progresses pretty well, though once you complete the first side ending you pretty much know what you'll have to do to complete the game. And that brings me to the thing that brought the game from great to moderate, that being that the game was over way to early. I bought the game and sold it back the following day, I would recomend renting this one.

I live in LA and let me tell you, when I'm playing this game I don't have to go outside see LA. I can go anywhere in LA just by playing the game. Playing True Crime is like watching an episode of Cops, you can stick to the main story or you can chase down little street crimes. True Crime is one of those games that no one will forget.

True crime isn't this easy

As stated above, true crime as in real life is not this easy. I bought this game the day it came out and I just beat it. Believe me I took my time, playing for about 30 minutes a week. I usually beat games in 2-3 days, when I was halfway done after a week I stopped playing, anywho... I will agree with most that the soundtrack is just bad. A game like this should have had customizable soundtracks, but leave it to marketing- they payed Snoop Dogg too much money to have you not listen to it. A little Dirty South rap would have been much better. Andy Lau- if anyone knows who he is then you'll have to agree does not play a believable Kang. As well as Michelle Rodriguez playing Rosie. I like Michelle Rodriguez a lot, but it was such a small role for her. And they make Nick Kang a pompous, arrogant person. Some things he says are funny, but he gets annoying, Andy Lau is so much better than that. On to the story, what is with the Ancient Wu junk? They should have put Kurt Russel in a game and called it Big Trouble in Little China... oh wait... I really wanted to like it, but when I have to fight a dragon under the city of Los Angeles the "True" Crime loses it's meaning. Overall, rent it, wait till it gets down to $20... And I didn't even mention the terrible controls, but you catch my drift.

not GTA-but thats not what it was trying to be

True Crime has the largest area I've ever covered in a game. Think about really taking a freeway from Hollywood to downtown L.A. and think about how long it would take-that's how long it takes to get there in the game. Streets are placed in ALL the right places and everything is well designed and looks just like, if not really close their real-life counterparts, oh, and if you've ever been to the Staples Center, you should check it out in the game-and LAX. Now to the gameplay...everyone was hoping it would be a buffed-up version of GTA with more area to cover, the truth is-it's not like GTA at all except for the ability to go around and shoot people. Trust me, the similarities stop there. Not only is there a great storyline to follow with multiple endings, but during the missions you have choice to go straight along them, stop the various crimes that are happening in the area (crimes range from people stealing video game trucks to disgruntled men who just lost big time on the stock market and are shooting people), or just go around and steal cars, frisk people, or shoot helpless innocents. Also, there is various facilities around the 240 square miles of L.A. that you can visit that offer training, new moves, new cars, new weapons, health, and more. The shooting, driving, and fighting engine really beat the hell out of GTA's. Especially the driving and fighting. The fighting engine is on par (and in some cases beats) with the best fighting games. This game is seriously fun, and if you like freedom, huge areas to explore, and a very good storyline, then True Crime is for you. As for the graphics-not the best seen, but also not the worst. The best things are the good car designs and the real-time reflections on the cars, also the extremely accurate city design. The music? Well, it mostly consists of aggressive rap music that matches well with alot of the gameplay. There's also a little rock found in the game. But if you don't like the music and you own the Xbox version of True Crime, you are in luck because this game supports custom soundtracks! All in all...this game is great.

The idea for this game is a good one. You can go around and flash your badge at people (or criminals), pat them down, and arrest them--whether you're solving a crime, doing a mission, or just roaming. It's strangely satisfying and has great potential. While the story line is pretty dull, the cut scenes are pretty well done and realistic enough. The graphics aren't stunning, but aren't horrible either. There seems to be a good number of cars in the game, and obviously a huge area to explore.

So why the 2-star rating? The gameplay is horrible. As another reviewer mentioned, the camera angle is always screwing up, and you'll find yourself constantly trying to adjust it just to see what's going on. Firing weapons can be pretty haphazard; to fire the weapon you pull and release the R-trigger, but to go into slow-mo sniper mode you hold the R-trigger in for a split second longer. When you're running down a bad guy and trying to fire your weapon, and you accidentally hold the R-trigger down for more than an instant, it goes into that slow-mo sniper mode and throws everything off. It's bad design.

The driving in this game is a nightmare, and not even close to realistic. The physics are fake, the cars whip around turns like their tires are glued to the road. Unlike 99% of racing game on the Xbox, this game doesn't use the R-trigger as your gas pedal. Instead, you use the A button. It takes getting used to, but is just the tip of the iceberg in regards to how screwed up the controls are (but luckily this is adjustable). I will say that the car damage in this game is pretty cool at times, but that hardly redeems it.

Overall, good, innovative idea, bad outcome (mostly resulting from poor gameplay and controls). If you can get it nice and cheap, it might be worth a try, but otherwise don't waste your time.

True Crime Streets in LA is a your average LA Cop game. If there where any others, But the Sequal should come out this Hoilday Season. Anyway There are goods and bads to the game lets start with the goods. The graphics are nice and a huge map to play with. The moves are cool. And if you dont want to do the missions you can allways help out with the crime in LA. I Loved the soundtrack to True Crime. It had all your favorite Like Lil flip lil mascare and all thoses Bling Bling Bitches. The negitive is your character is a real dick, He thinks he funny but is a real loser. And the moves are old and crapy. Instead of getting this get Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Pretty much this game is a bad coppy over of the GTA Seris. I give it 3 Stars
