A TRUELY GREAT GAME

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 1

True Crimes: Streets of LA brings together jackie chan style fighting, max payne style shooting, and grand theft auto meets need for speed undergound driving. When you beat all of the missions which range from driving to save your brother, fighting a martial arts fighter, or escaping he triads in a high stakes get-away. TCSOLA never gets boring due to its amazing side-story, if you could call it that. When your not on missions you recieve calls from the dispatcher telling you of crimes taking place in your area. In response to this you can either do it or not. The whole point of the game is to be a good cop and the bottom corner of the screen you have a bar which shows if your a good or bad cop. This is effected by things such as completing missions and doing them safely(destruction of property etc.).
TCSOLA does have violence in it so I wouldnt recommend it for younger players although its violence is not so much as to restrict children who are allowed to play The Rainbow Six series.
If you buy this game I gaurentee you a great game you wont finish quickly and defiantly wont ever bored of.

Two Stars for the amount of Content

True Crime: Streets of L.A. may have the traits of many great games thrown into it, but just because it stole ideas from various companies and compiled them into one game, does it really make it that great?

The game is similar to the "Grand Theft Auto" series in the sense that it allows you to go anywhere and do anything (sort of.) Apparently, there are around 200 square miles of Los Angeles rendered down to every last detail and to many, this would be considered a programming achievement. Hundreds of vehicles are the players' to steal, (or 'commandeer,' as this game puts it) bullet-time similar to that of Max Payne or Dead-to-Rights is integrated, and there are many moves and weapons to choose from. But what largly dampers the amount of content in the game is the fact that the framerate is painfully slow, the controls are unresponsive and practically act on their own, and the draw distance (how far the player can see out onto the horizon in the virtual world) is lower than any Xbox game I've ever played. Sure, any company can stuff a game full of as many ideas as they can, but what really counts is the quality of the ideas, whether they be abundant or scarce.

Grand Theft Auto fans hoping for a similar experience in this game will be both fulfilled and dissapointed at the same time. If a gamer is looking for a no-holds-barred, shoot-everything, freedom frenzy in this game, they will be dissapointed. The worst thing you can intentionally do to a civilian is run them over with your leniently 'borrowed' car. The only people one can pull a gun on are the drug lords and the gangsters. I suppose this is moralic, but what is the point of playing a video game if it is just as restrictive as the real-world? I'd rather stick to my artificial, yet gratuitous acts of violence, thank you very much.

As far as the story goes, it is sort of interesting, if you like watching hyped-up 80's Box Office flops. And the way the story plays out is inventive, but frustrating. If the player screws up, there are no retries, no game overs, no nothing. The plot just keeps going, changing itself to fit one's flaws; my question is, if the game just keeps getting harder and doesn't let the player stop, how does one master their skills? As soon as the player has actually withstood these faults for long enough, they are finally granted the ability to run around the city, though all the while having to put up with crappy one-liners from the main character and boring civilian acts of tolerance.

If you need a time-eater, this is it, considering you'll feel obligated to keep playing due to the game's pressuring, obnoxious style. It is neat to explore the vast amount of cityscape rendered in this game, but other than exploration, which can be found in Grand Theft Auto anyways, this game is not worth much. I recommend renting it before the thought of buying it even crosses your mind.

NOT AS COOL AS YOU THINK IT IS!!!!

Well, for a game that ripped off a bunch of cool games (Getaway extensivly, which ripped off GTA, Max Payne, etc.), it was mediocre at best. The graphics are better in some situations, but worse in others, not too consistent. I beat the game in less than 7 hours (all 3 endings + upgrades, and alternate episodes). After you get the hang of the game, it becomes increasingly easier and easier. Which is weird, since games usually get progressivly more difficult. Plus, it goes from a realistic storyline to fantasy storyline.

The best way I can summarize this game is: It's a game that you would like to play until you beat it and never play it again. Hardly any replay factor, unlike the GTA series (for me anyway). If you want my advice, go to Blockbuster, rent it, solve it, return it. You just saved over 40 bucks.

I am still playing the game and enjoyed it up until get got freaky with the whole fire breathing dragon, zombies, and dont not to mention the flaming skulls. Yes I think this game is a rip off of GTA and the getaway but the getaway got boring after awhile and they tried to hard to make it look real. I have never plyed Max Payne so I dont know how the "originator" looked but I like how if you hit a car in a certain spot it will blow up. Now if anyone is a true GTA fan then they shouldnt get mad at this copy. The plus up it does have is the fact there is soo much more roads and streets to go down., Hell it has a working freeway!!!

People say the controls are hard but they are so easy. I learned them in 5 minutes.I paid $50 And it was worth the risk. Gameplay is awsome and the graphics are super. Its nothing like Grand Theft Auto And Thats What Makes it soooooooooooo good.

When i first heard about this game i was expecting a GTA rivalry but what the heck this game turned out not that good at all, the main character says the dumbest things and the gameplay isnt even that great.

Don't even bother

I tried this game 4 times. The controls and handling are difficult at best. In several efforts to stop the "random crime", I ended up killing civillians. Every time I ended up a "bad cop" BEFORE I even got halfway through the first mission. Compairing Vice City and this game would be like compairing a Ferrari and a Model T. Don't waste your money unless you just want to drive around a nicely detailed large city.

True Crime was good, but could have been better

It's a fun game for the most part.

Being a games journalist I come across a lot of video games on a daily basis. So playing a game like this was a bit refreshing -- insofar that it managed to spark and retain the interest of the gamer. All too often most developers get lazy with keeping the pace and entertainment values high, but that certainly didn't happen with this game.

Graphically True Crime looks terrible. Easily it's not the best looking Xbox game. But the numerous missions and non-loading make for an enjoyable, Mature-oriented experience.

A perfect cousin to GTA

Last week, I bought both the GTA double pack and True crime:Streets of LA.I enjoy them both greatly.I don't really think you can compare the two except on cruising with a great soundtrack;but with the street crimes, even that's different. One great thing is the voice talent, I mean what other game can boast Christopher Walken, and other big names. It's proof that you can have decent voice talent, not like some cheesy Resident evil script that even an adult movie would reject. The driving/fighting/shooting skills do take a while to master and stay alive, but it's like one of the games you call, easy to learn, long time to master.I would say buy both True Crime and GTA. I mean both are great games, and different enough to warrant getting both games. It is a lengthy game with great replay value, so that's another bonus.
