Great graphics, but it's best LIVE

MechAssault boasts great graphics, detailed Mechs and engaging single player ... but just wait until you take your mechs LIVE!

The game basically has you controlling a variety of mechanical robots with armor and weapons on a planetary assault mission. You land and start fighting off infantry, tanks, other mechs, and more.

There are a bunch of single player missions that you go through on your quest to rid the planet of the enemy. The graphics are quite nice, with rolling fields, rocky mountains, bases full of bridges and vehicles. You can blow up boats, take out bridges, demolish large buildings. You can stomp on infantry and shoot down helicopters. It's very destructive, but all in the name of saving the planet.

The mech takes a little getting used to, because of the combinations of flying, twisting torso, movement, and weapon selections you have. But really, for any gamer that's played games for more than a year, this shouldn't be a problem. The controls are rather intuitive and we were up and running with the mech in no time flat. Your ability to pretty much go anywhere and demolish anything means that you can take a number of different approaches to any problem. Add in the fact that you can often choose from a variety of mechs to take on the mission, each with its own configuration, and you can really get involved.

Still, the missions are single player and your multiplayer gameplay on your own system is two player only. The single player missions can probably be won in a weekend if you go for the easy settings. But all of these things are merely TRAINING for the true on line experience, with XBox Live!!

No AI is ever going to match the true cunning of a human (at least not any time soon) and when you play on XBox Live, you get to play against entire teams of mechs! You can play Capture the Flag, deathmatch, team deathmatch, and MANY other types of games. It is amazingly fun! And you really do need that single player or two-player local mode to practice in, so you can hold your own against the Mech players from around the world.

Highly, highly recommended if you have XBox Live. It's a blast! If you don't have XBox live yet, it's a great game to play for a while, if you keep increasing the difficulty level to keep you challenged.

Okay alone, Awesome Live

The old mech games for the PC were a lot of fun alone, and I got this hoping to play it both alone and live.

Although it's enjoyable alone (or 2 player), it won't keep your attention long that way.

The 2 player game only has 2 different maps (maybe there are others I can download or unlock - I've not tried yet). There are plenty of different Mechs to choose from, but the lack of variety of maps means you'll get bored within a few hours. After a few hours of this, we went back to Halo (which we've probably logged about 1000 hours on so far).

The 1 player version has a decent storyline and is challenging. But after you've made it all the way through, you'll retire the game.

UNLESS YOU HAVE XBOX LIVE! Live is totally different. Playing with others online makes this a killer game. If you have Xbox live and you like to play online, this game will spend a lot of time in your console.

If you have Xbox Live, get MechAssault.
If you don't have Xbox Live, get something else.

A solid game, BUT missing some features of the MW4 PC game

First off, let me say I'm having a blast playing this game! I sure love blowing buildings up, and it's satisfying to toast your enemy 'mechs and watch them fry when their fusion reactors blow up. I haven't tried the Live version yet, but I'm sure it'll be more fun playing against humans. AI can be a bit dumb sometimes.

OK. The bad parts? The 3rd person view can be a bit annoying when your mech is up against trees or cliffs - it goes bananas - I get disoriented. I wish they would allow us to switch between different views like in MW4; you have a cockpit view, and several different 3rd person views, which even allows you to see yourself from the front, from the left, from the right, from above, etc.. Also, targeting in MW4 allows a ZOOM, which is really neat when you try to hit far-away targets that you can't see on screen.

The next thing is that unlike MW4, there aren't any critical hit areas where you can shoot off a 'mech's leg, arm, or a weapon pod, instead of just shooting at the torso. The other thing, is there's no more "Death from Above" move, where your mech with Jumpjets (like cougar and Uziel, for example) jumps off and lands on top of another mech to damage it. It's one of the Mech Warrior 4 highlights. It's one of those hard core Mech Warrior moves that I love to try.

Another thing: you can't customize your 'mech in Mech Assault (so far - maybe in live, but I don't know). This is another MW4 highlight that I love. There are many camo and marks you can put to make your mech *distinctively your own* in MW4. I really miss that feature.

I understand that this is a console game, but there's no reason why you can't have some depth to the game such as custom skin, critical movements and critical damage abilities. I think it would have made me give this game 5 out of 5 stars.

Good blasting fun even for the single player

I'll be the first to admit that I don't like multiplayer games. I'm more of a solitary gamer. I don't buy into Xbox Live or any online play services. That said, I have been enjoying Mech Assault tremendously. My time with the series goes back to the very first installment of Mech Warrior; oh, that was how many years ago? 8, 9? Can't remember. But Mech Assault is the best of the series, by far, and also the best of mech games I've laid my hands on. The environment is vast, the gameplay tight and FUN, and the framerate excellent. This latter point is important because it makes the game enjoyable, compared to old versions where the mech would move painfully slowly. This time around they fly and leap, and truly come to life. The graphics is first-rate. The controls are easy and Halo-like. And everyone just loves the sight and feel of megaton explosions.

Like I said, I don't play multiplayer, but every review raves about the online play. So the final verdict is, 5 stars for a single-player gaming experience, and more (you name it) for added online features.

In short, this is one game I'll play again and again, if for nothing else besides running my favorite tech around and just blasting away at everything in sight. (Disclaimer: this reviewer is a totally peace-loving American and only blasts away bad guys and bad buildings worthy of getting blasted.)

Dumbed-down but a blast

This is a simplified version of the PC game, MechWarrior 4. For example, you have to use stock mechs for example... no customizing. You pick up the scrap of dead mechs and use it immediately. There are only a few different multiplayer games, but lots of maps. More mechs and maps are promised to be downloadable from Live.

That aside, the game plays very well. The graphics and framerate are good even in multiplayer. I haven't played online in LIVE yet, but I can't wait! The game is fun and addictive. Best Xbox game I've bought since Halo.

Those not on X-Box Live just don't get it...

I've read several mediocre reviews of Mech Assault which all seem to revolve around complaints associated with single or 2 player modes -- These complaints are for the most part valid, but miss the point of the game: One should not purchase this game if your plan is to play it by your lonesome, period. This is not your father's Mech Warrior...

Mech Assault is at it's best when played live over XBL. While I'm not an aficionado of the Mech Warrior franchise, I have purchased a few of their titles (Fasa - Pre Microsoft) in the past and have to say that I've found this to be the most enjoyable one so far: I can't begin to explain how much fun it is to play over XBL - playing the PC-versioned Mech Warrior titles online can't hold a candle to XBL experience: I've yet to hit a laggy game, and the voice component can really be a blast.

My one complaint about this game (and it's really more of a criticism of XBL in general) is the difficulty of putting an obnoxious player on your "ignore/mute list". There is no way to do this easily while "in game" in order to immediately silence someone who is annoying to you - You have to wait till after your current game is over, then go back to a menu and pull the trigger on them. I want the ability to do this immediately rather than having to suffer through a complete session of hearing some ... babble away. (At times I just turn down the volume all the way, but then I can't hear the "good guys" either).

Anyway, this is a fantastic game if you're an XBL owner. Don't hesitate to pick it up.

MechAssualt is one of those games that, when you beat the story, you
crave more. MechAssualt is one of those games that, when it's all
said and done, you can really look back and say "that was an AWSOME
game!" Not many games leave you craving more, and even fewer games
that do leave that feeling, have more to offer.

But for MechAssualt, when the INCREDIBLE story and game play is over,
you realize that the fun is just beginning.

Here's a review of MechAssualt for the Microsoft XBOX:

1) Single Player: This game was one of the best games I have EVER
played. Your living in the 34th century, and there's a planet with a
group of terrorists, called "The Word of Blake" who threaten the rest
of the world. Your part of a Space Army. Your sent to restore peace
to this planet, and take out anyone who threatens to do otherwise.
You are the future's cops!

So you and your co-workers are the 1st team. Your sent in to secure
the planet for the rest of the Dabloon to arrive and destroy the
enemy. Your in enemy territory from the beginning, trying to secure
the safety of the rest of your Dabloon. You are part of
the "Icuras", and you have some of the coolest weapons ever thought
up of. They're called BattleMechs.

If you fail your mission, THOUSANDS COULD DIE... Good luck!

That's just the beginning! You must now plan, think, destroy, and
fight your way through dozens of Mechs. You start out small with
little Mechs. But as you get deeper into the story, you begin to use
some of the more powerful Mechs as they become available. You must
defeat the "Word of Blake", before they defeat you!

The game really begins to kick in later on, as there are so many
types of missions. One has you inside of a stolen Mech, trying to
sneak into one of their bases, get information, then make a run for
it. You must blast bridges to cut off enemies, bring cities down in
rubble (on top of your enemies if your lucky). There is strategy
involved, too, as you can sometimes avoid hits, take out stronger Mechs first, etc...

Another strategic element is trying to decide how to fight each
mission. The smaller Mechs are TWICE as fast, and some of them can
become invisible for 30 seconds. They vanish before your eyes,
giving you (if your using one) the ability to sneak around and get
away from massive Mechs, without damage. Or perhaps go for big and
slow, as they have some of the coolest weapons ever thought up.
Electric shocks, machine guns, time bombs, etc...

It's all worth it, too, as if you beat the game, there's a nice little prize waiting!

2) Graphics: INCREDIBLE! Your Mechs, when damaged, are smoking, or
if you aim for a leg, you'll see them dragging along a broken leg.
Sparks fly across the Mechs huge bulk, a sign that a few more shots
will result in it's destruction. Any building, in 2 words, CAN
FALL. And the explosions are awesome! The windows break, fire is
everywhere, dust chokes the entire screen after a HUGE building
falls. In the end, it creates a feeling of all out war!

When you shoot at the ground, dirt flies up, when you walk through
the water, water splashes. Basically...ANYTHING CAN BE DESTROYED! Hech, your Mechs even leave footprints. The graphics here are incurable, along with the story that leaves you craving for the sequel!

3) Multiplayer: Even without XBOX LIVE, the Multiplayer can be

sweet. You can play with you and a buddy and go 1 on 1 with the most
powerful weapons in the world, or work as a team, trying to destroy
as many Mechs as possible. The longer you survive, the more Mechs
you'll be facing at once. Buildings (and Mechs) will fall!

System link is awesome, too! As you can have 1-8 players in battles of even 4-4 in ULTIMATE DESTRUCTION, or several other mini-games to play!!! Sweet!

4) XBOX Live: The greatest feature of all. Get a team of 4 and take
on another team of 4. Or take another human Mech Warrior 1 on 1.
With dozens of Mechs to use, and a ton of games to play and places to
fight in (and soon destroy), the multiplayer is endless! With games
like Deathwatch, Grinder (4 people fight endless Mechs until no human player is left standing), etc...(over 6) But that's not all!

Rankings!: Compete for kills. Can you get to 10,000 , 20,000? Will
you be the #1 Mech player in the country? Will the world fear you?
It's pretty cool. And when you try 4 player Grinder, and try to
finish off as many computer controlled Mechs as possible, it's really
cool!

5) Downloadable Content: Within a few weeks, we should have something
that's never been done in the history of video games! Downloadable
Content. That's right! In a few weeks, you can download to your
XBOX hard drive *NEW* Mechs, *NEW* game types, *NEW* arenas to fight
in, etc... And they'll just keep coming. The possibilities are
endless! *NEW* downloads, to begin with, will include:

A) New Level to play in: "H*ll's Kitchen". A volcanic level!

B)New Game Type: "Capture the Flag" 2-4 new Mechs (not yet been
announced)

And much much more! And the best part, it's all going to be
$$$FREE$$$

As you can see, MechAssualt is a HUGE and complete package. There is
so much to do, so much to try, so much to download. This game could
easily keep you busy 150+ Hours. And when something starts to get
old, there'll be more stuff to download to the XBOX hard disk.

I hope I convinced you to get this game. Great graphics, online play, single player, etc... My kinda game! U?

Thx!

The game is O.K.

The game is fun but I wish I rented it before I bought it cause I'm kinda disappointed. It only took me a day to beat the game so I'm kinda bummed, I don't feel I got my fifty bucks worth out of it. The graphics are fun and good to look at however the game play isn't all that I had hoped it would be. No matter what Mech I choose, I get three similar weapons to use in battle and the action is pretty much the same even thought I choose a different Mech.

If you enjoyed the Mech games on the PC I think you'll be pretty unsatisfied in the way this game plays. My advice again is rent it before you buy it. I would have only gave this game 2 stars but the graphics are better than most games I've played on X-box so far.

Its missing..... oh yeah the FUN!!

This isn't a bad game and I'm sure people new to the series will enjoy it. But be warned if you're looking for the type of gameplay you'd expect from a 'mech game (mechwarrior 3 & 4) you are out of luck. You cannot mod your 'mech (thats right not at all). In most missions you can't even choose which mech to go into battle with. Phantom Crash might be a better choice for those of you out there that enjoy a little more freedom in gameplay. The only reason to purchase this game is if you have XBOX live, otherwise you'll soon be bored of the 19 levels this game has to offer.
