Three things concern me when it comes to buying a game, Graphics, replay value and fun factor.
I rated this game how i did because it has all three, while i know it hasn't come out yet i am convinced of this by the research i have done.
First the graphics, fire a rocket- see the trail, the light from the flaming exaust, the glass shattering in the side of the building as the explosion goes off, the dust from crumbling concrete, and chunks of columns as the building comes crashing down. I have seen all of these in the trailers available.
Lighting effects give explosions a new demension, muzzle flashes give away an enemy hiding in the alleyway... Particle effects are very well used and add to the scope of the world around you as it comes crashing down...
Next the replay value... Games by themselves tend to get old, AI gets repetitive, graphics can seem repetitive also... where do you get replay then? Playing with other people!!! Online play. With online death matches you can hone your skills and trim that mech into the perfict fit for your fighting style, lure an unsuspecting oponent into an alleyway and crash a building down on top of him, see someone rocketing up to a building top? wait till he gets close and destroy the building before he can land- watching him fall all the way back down ).
Finally the fun factor... need i say more?
This game gives the mechwarrior series the final thing it was lacking... ACTION. When you are in the midst of a city with huge buildings falling to pieces and attempting to get out of their way as well as fight as part of a team or a free for all against 5 or 6 other mechs... try to remain calm.
The third person perspective actually draws you into the game more than a first person would when you can see to scale all the dangers around you and the action turns fast paced you will feel it more than any other mechwarior to date... Enjoy )

This game is actually an okay game to play once in a while. The controls are intuitive, well placed and the graphics are outstanding.

My problem lies in the gameplay. It takes absolutly no skill whatsoever to play this game. You have rockets which automatically home in on their targets, so it takes no skill to shoot other people, and it takes no skill from other people to shoot you. Such as the mechs are slow moving, you might as well be just standing still and shooting each other to see who dies first.

If you are used to First Person Shooters, and like the speed, agility and skill in a game, this one is not for you.

Its a fun, uncomplicated game, that is easy to learn.

But perhaps that is the problem. The single player levels are too easy and uncomplicated; sure you get killed once in a while and need to replay the entire level, but after a while its just more of the same. You get more and different mechs to choose from, but I found the levels to be a bit repetitive.

Online play can be fun as long as you pick the right mech to use. It often seems as if there are only 2 or 3 mechs that used for online play and if you try to pick something exotic you're not going to have much fun. There are two new maps and two new mechs currently available for download (although I've never seen any of the new mechs being used in online play) which expand the game somewhat. No new game tpyes are available yet as someone else mentioned, although the idea of capture the flag would be a most welcome addition to the online experience. It gets old after a while when almost 99% of the online games are a destruction variant.

The other major issue which was previously noted is that everyone is booted from a game when it finishes. That makes absolutely no sense when you have a group of people you'd like to play a few rounds with.

Unlike other games, MechAssault has a pretty low replay value. However not everything is bad. The first time you start this up, run through a city and have buildings crashing down around you it is truly fun. Crushing infantry under foot and shooting a bridge out from under an enemy mech is always a pleasure.

In the end, however, this is probably better as a game to pick up used and save a few dollars rather than purchasing new.

two words: Xbox Live

I play this game almost every night. Sorry, but it's that good. I play it on Live and enjoy every moment, even the times where my team [is bad](playing Team Deathmatch) and we lose. Every now and then, I just play alone, playing a mission I've already completed, or playing on the Grinder mode (allowing you to fight mechs in a sequential order, getting your skills up to par for real fighting). This game rocks, and I have played it for many weeks (since January) and haven't gotten tired of it since. Man, you people expect too much. Think of a game like a good hamburger (vege burger for the vege people out there). Sure it's good to have everyday if you could, but yes, eventually you'll get tired of it, and eventually some day come back to it.

Mechassault does the job of entertaining me for an hour a day. That's all I need.

This game is umbelievably fun. You are in giant mechs that all have different charecteristics from the others. You have awesome weapons. An awesome game.

This is *not* battletech.

When I heard that microsoft was putting out a battletech themed game for XBox, I was quite excited. I played battletech quite a bit in college, and I was looking forward to checking out a new game in this genre. To this end, I was a bit dissapointed with Microsofts implementation of the game. Gone is the strategy that used to come with piloting a battlemech. Some of the things that are notibly missing:

* The ability to customize the weapons systems on your mech. All mechs come stock, and you have no control over how much armor, weapons, heat sinks etc that you outfit with

* Mechs do not take damage to specific parts of their bodies. Forget about aiming for a key system on an enemy. All mech's instead have a generic "life bar" that is replenished by picking up power ups.

* All ammunition is unlimited. There is no need to figure out how much ammo to stock your mech with.

All of this isnt to say that its a bad game. If you're looking for a generic "giant robots beating the snot out of each other" game, this one is fun. The graphic are quite nice and the various battlefieds take realistic damage. Stray shots will punch holes into office buildings, shattering their glass...evergreen trees catch fire, etc.

All in all, if you're looking for a good multiplayer fighting game this one if fun, but if you're expecting authentic battletech-style action you might want to take a pass on this one.

MechAssault is a great game for anyone who wants to be able to destroy everything in his path, and school armys with one huge battle machine. Destroying other Mechs and tanks as well. But when you finish the main game and have all of the mechs, then you would throw it aside not play it again? No. Not if you have Xbox Live. In Live you can play Capture The Flag, download new Mechs, and play with hundreds of players just like you, and you will always come back for more. If you don't have Xbox Live or a system link, that your wasting your money.

Great game, cant wait for the second one

Well, mechassault is definitely a gung-ho action game that blasts out of the pen with guns blazing and metal smashing...

The game runs a healthy length with plenty of missions and devastation to satisfy your average action junkie...

However after the something-teenth mission of "Go get this guy..." or "Blow this thing up..." the action becomes way too familiar and by the end of the game I was only playing to reach the credits. The story is okay, but it is based on the action and really doesn't have any solid footing - in all honesty it isn't necessary. There is no character development or improvement upon the mechs - although you do get different mechs at certain points of the game they all handle relatively the same way.

The performance of the game was perfect, the graphics were great, the sound great, and the action great. If those are items you love in games then by all means scoop this one up; but if you like a little more depth than constant explosions and repetitive combat sequences then pass this one up.

Take care!

Mechassault is the best! I love it. in the game you got campain mode, (multiplayer up to 8 players), and xbox live! In mechassault you have a big variaty between mechs, levels, and more. I only gave 4 stars because you can't build your own mechs or levels. But if you want a good shoot m up game buy this. it also has 100 star graphics!
