Superb Action/Adventure Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

Oni is an extremely fun anime style action/adventure game featuring great music, colorful graphics, amusing dialog/sound effects, and the ability to fight martial arts style or with futuristic weapons. Stealth and agility are useful in this game, as well as good aim and strategy. Highly recommended!

Very Nice

Most of the third person action games I've played have been one or the other: hand-to-hand or guns. Oni is very much different in that you do both (granted, guns are pretty weak, but more on that later). I was pretty impressed by how deep the fighting is. You could of course just bang away at the attack buttons and eventually wear down your enemies, but that would take forever, and it wouldn't look very impressive (Coolest move ever: Running Lariat--Ring their neck as you dash on by) One thing I've noticed is that the guns (except for the Superball Gun, and Mercury Bow) are pretty much useless. Against an advancing group, I suppose one could come in handy to pick off a couple of enemies, but one on one, they don't work too well. You're better off just throwing down and start punching.
Over all, I like this game a hell of a lot, and play it repeatedly just for kicks (Bad pun). Also, the anime theme of this game carries over into an actual anime (granted, it's hard to find, but it's out there.)

This game is one of the best i have played in a long time. The grafx are dated, yes and the levels tend to look the same but the game plays like a dream. Being chased by three guys over catwalks, sliding to dodge heat-seeking rockets, and watching ase the rockets you dodged hit your attackers never gets old. I love friendly fire! The storyline is cool, i care about the charachters and the final decision of chapter 13 is one of the coolest things in a video game to date. ...

Best 3rd person game I've ever played (all genres included)

This game has it all: passable graphics (for its time), good voice acting, engaging plot, and addictive gameplay. The only drawback that I have detected is the "Save Point" system it uses...it is not always fun to have to replay almost an entire level because you took your eye off the screen for a moment and fell to your death. But it is a minor obstacle and does not diminish the coolness of this game. Innovative, addictive, and FUN, Oni is a must-have!

**Side Note: If I have been properly informed, then in Japanese, an "oni" is a monstrously small possibility; a 1 in 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000 chance, or something like that...

Great fun--some flaws

This is the first game that has every attempted having hand-to-hand combat as well as shooting. So far, the product is amazing. The fighting is awesome, there are tons of combos and power moves, and it's very, very easy to learn. That said, there were a few flaws for this game. First, because this game was released on both consoles and the PC, there are fixed save points. That in itself is not that bad, but the save points are very spread out. Another thing is the game is told in anime form. This means that the acting is pretty cheap, and the plot doesn't make a whole lot of sense. But don't play this game for the plot. Play it for the fighting. The camera control can be kind of iffy sometimes, because a guy can sneak up behind you and you wouldn't know it. Also, the levels look a lot a like, you'll take full advantage of your compass.

i LOVE this game. It has got to be one of my favorite games i have ever played. The PC or MAC versions are much better than the PS2's. If you want to play this game, a two button mouse is a MUST HAVE. This game has superb graphics, amazing gameplay, and it is very immersive. The only thing wrong is the bad graphics in the cut scenes. They are just the ingame character models. I highly enjoyed this game. I played the demo and was hooked in 15 minutes. I highly reccomend this game to any person who likes fighters. Imaging Street Fighter or Tekken, just put into a third person game. That is what this is.

The Matrix - The Animated Game

Hyped beyond the stars, Oni left many reviewers cold upon release. But this Anime-style 3rd-person fighter should not be passed up for a number of strong reasons.

One of the many criticisms centers around the bland level design and the less than stellar graphics. However, the core of the game, namely the fighting system - is wonderful in its three-dimensional complexity and its aesthetic results.

Konoko, the cartoon version of Run Lola Run's female lead, can not only fight like Neo, but she has the same liking for guns, which she can borrow from her opponents. The enemies themselves are well-realized, though a bit repetitive, though this is fairly common.

In a way, this is a great opportunity to play an infinitely cooler version of Tomb Raider. Only now, the character's moves an other aspects of the game are somewhat better crafted.

Arguably, Anime-inspired games have an edge over their classically-themed competitors due the inherent appeal of violent cartoons. Oni is no different, and it's a wonder it didn't end up somewhat more highly regarded. Though cut-scenes aren't particularly well made, at least the voice talent is indeed talented.

As long as the criticisms are addressed, then Oni's sequel (if anyone takes up the franchise) could become a hit.

Excellent graphics and fighting skills :-)

You will never get bored with Oni, because it offered lot more fun than you just expected from the rest of the action games.

Comparing with NOLF, No One Live Forever, it has multiplayers accessed on its game server, but Oni is a single player pc game without having NOLF's online features. NOLF and Oni were my most favorite pc games in the year of 2001.

Oni is composed of 14 major levels with excellent graphics and music design. The game level modes are easy, normal, hard. Recently, I finished with all 14 levels and got a cheatcode at the last level ending. I would like to share it with all the Oni fans in here.

Press: F1, Type: shapeshifter, you will see, "Character Changed Enable." Press: ESC, Then Press: F8 repeatly to pick your most favorite fighter during the game.

There were more than 30 characters on this game. They were powerful bad guys, strong security agents and civillians. Each types of these characters had different sets of fighting skills. Here I am not talking about the skills of using powerful weapons, instead, I meant their powerful "Jet Li" kinds of fatal martial moves...I don't think I need to describe them even further.

You look like you are ready to rock the Oni world now. Have fun :-)

Disturbingly Fun

The most engaging, and varied combat I've ever seen in an action game. With an amazingly simple array of controls you can do quite a lot. This game is not just barging in and killing everyone (or John wayneing it)it has alot of stelth and infiltration, while not being just a sniper. In the game you can't pick up more than one weapon at a time making you think. Also the saveing method of not letting you save every second made the game more of a challenge.
The story line is fairly simple but then becomes quite twisted towards the end, then at the end it still left you wondering.
I've also noticed it doesn't matter that there is no multyplayer, as some other reviewers thought to be a problem. Who actually plays multyplayer anyway?

Oni rocks...

One of the best games of this type I played in the last years. If you're into Anime this is a PC game you should have played. There's not much searching or puzzling to do (you get a compass of where you should go to) and the game is linear, it's a more "brains-to-zero-lets-kick-[them]" game with a great combat system.

Granted the backgrounds are not as detailed as could be but the game is very atmospheric and playable.

On the downside, there's no multiplayer. There will be no ONI II or derivatives as the company stopped producing games.
