Diablo meets Whack-a-mole

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 6 / 9

When I first started playing the game, I thought I had purchased a classic. Something as simple as Diablo, but with a story, an immersive world, and a few unique twists (like the conjurer class). However, after a couple of hours I was quickly proven wrong. Combat eventually deginerated into what could best be described as a mideval whack-a-mole. The challenge of combat boils down to this: try to get your mouse to center over a rapidly moving target, while healing and/or trying not to get hammered. Some of the enemeies moved some damn fast, I literally spent an hour running around in a circle while trying to hit this equally fast thing with a few dozen spells. Eventually I figured out the trick then that makes all combat trivial (no spoiler here). Then I felt no desire to finish the game. Wait for Diablo 2. In the meantime play PlanetScape, Thief II, Unreal Tournament

I bought the game knowing my computer covered all the requirements. But when I try to play, the game crashes. I sent the company, and by the looks of their technical support list, it has a lot of problems.

Am I missing something?

After reading rave reviews for this game I was very eager to buy a copy and play it. Unfortunately I found the game did not live up to my expectations. I found Nox to be little more than a mouse "click fest". Much too linear and repetitive! In single player mode the protagonist is delivered to an area and the player clicks madly on their mouse until the area is completed. If you are looking for a CRPG I suggest you look at Planescape: Torment or wait for one of the upcoming offerings from Black Isle.

I bought Nox since it looked decent, but was not happy with the game. The reasons are that it brings almost nothing new to RPGs, and does not have enough innovation to keep me playing. Sure it has dynamic lighting, but the pixels are as big as a ultralisks aft orifice. After playing the game for two months I could not understand why some many magazines gave such a average game tons of "above average" reviews. Totally linear gameplay combined with a pathetic disney sense of humour make this game a 'bring me back'. Considering the amount of time Westwood took to get Nox to the markets many people who bought the game will soon clear some surplus space of their hard drives since you will not get obsessed with it. Tough Luck Westwood...

Electronic Arts simply isn't known for putting out good games of this type. Their money seems to be on sports games. Anyway, I got Nox at the bargain bin price. The game is solo action pseudo-rpg. Buy this game if you want to help Amazon out.

Manages to take the worst parts of both Diablo and Quake...

and make something entirely not fun. This is NOT an RPG, it's a deathmatch fantasy action game. To it's credit, it has nice graphics and pretty good spell effects. Other than that it's Diablo without the originality, and Quake without the visceral adrenaline-pumping action. It's a dumb game, with a dumb concept, and no ground-breaking ideas to it's credit. Don't bother...

Diablo (solo or co-op play) fans, wait for Diablo2

If you enjoy multiplayer Player vs. Player, BUY THIS GAME! However, if you're a fan of solo or cooperative play, keep reading.

The crisp graphics and ability to interact with almost everything around you as you play this game is incredible. There is so much attention to detail in your surroundings and you can talk with just about any NPC you encounter, which is how you get most of your quests. The gameplay is slick and fast, and a lot of fun once you get used to using both buttons on the mouse (left-click to attack, right-click to move). And if you enjoy multiplayer PvP games (on a LAN or over the Internet), then this is definitely your game.

But it's not all positive. I'll admit that I was looking for something to not a PvP fan, and that is what this game was originally designed for - solo play was an (obvious) afterthought. There is no cooperative play in Nox at all, and as far as I can tell, there won't be anytime soon. Solo play is engaging, but the game is rather short and you can't play again as the same character class and make it a truly different game (i.e. focus on different skills or choose a harder level of play) since everything else stays the same.

The game comes with 2 CDs which made me think it was an expansive game, but solo play never touches the 2nd CD. Diablo2 is going to have around 5 CDs, so you KNOW it's a much larger game than this one. And with random generation of dungeons, quasi-random assigment of quests, and the ability to play the same character through multiple games of increasing difficulty, D2 is a "longer-playing" game than Nox. From the screenshots and gameplay reviews I've read about Diablo2, and the actual playing I've done with Nox, I think that Diablo2 will be a better solo-player game and well worth the money spent on it. Nox is a good game, but having spent $40 on it, I expected more.

Good, but not a classic

I bought this game while I was bored one evening. I went to my local best buy looking for something to hold my ever shortening attention span and I saw this on the shelf. For lack of something else I bought it and was happily supprised. It entertained me for a good three nights while I played it in the evenings with my shiny new Conjurer. The game play is sort of diablo-ish, but not quite as much of a dungeon crawl. Your scenery constantly changes as you wander on your quest to save nox (and get back home to your... trailer park?). I had a blast playing this game and was really eager to play it multi-player. Which horribly crushed me when I discovered it was only death-match (okay, okay, it has capture the flag too, but I still call that death-match). No co-operative play what-so-ever. This really killed the games re-playability in my eyes. It's a lot of fun winning the game solo, but I just can't bring myself to pick it up anymore, and i'm sorry, but these types of games just weren't ment for deathmatch.

All in all, a great single player game, but if you're looking for a lasting multiplayer experience, I'd go elsewhere.

Cool Game

When I first played Nox it was at my cousins house, it was a blast! Then I got it for my bday in January. But by Xmas it was getting boring. I say it's good at first but gets boring later on.

Originally I would have givven this game a 10 out of 5. This is one of the most original and creative games I have ever played! I could play for weeks on end withought getting board with this game. Unfortunately I recently found out that this game can no longer be played online...This crushed my soul into oblivion! This was quite possibly the BEST MULTIPLAYER RPG EVER. Now it's just a memory from a distant past. The blame for this great injustice falls on EA Games, who decided to dissolve one of their branches Called Westwood Studios (the creators and sole online supporters of NOX). Man I miss this game...
