terrible game

i played this game for several months. ffxi is, literally, a waste of time. since there is little content story-wise, the developers have made the choice to make the game excruciatingly time-consuming. you have to run everywhere for your first 18 levels. you have to spend an hour (at least) looking for a party, because beyond level 10 or so the experience through playing solo is worthless. and finally, you can collect money, finish quests, gain levels, or run missions to raise your rank--but rarely can you do any of these simultaneously. so you spend eight hours to level up your character one to three levels (if you're lucky), then spend eight hours to get a decent set of gear for that level you just got, then try to gain a rank so one day you'll be able to finally take the airship and get places faster, and repeat, repeat, repeat.

it all comes down to CHOICE. ffxi is one of the most suffocating games i've played. you must play with a party. you must not form guilds, only "linkshells," which are loose configurations of players without the sense of community a guild would bring. you must not mod your gear. you must choose from our very limited set of character faces and styles, so you run into your clone seven times a day. square-enix wants you to play a game the way they tell you to. there is no room for player innovation.

finally, the game is currently rife with CHEATERS. and square-enix is doing nothing about it. yes, if you want to play a game where people who farm gil (in-game money) to sell in the real world for dollars, thus causing inflation in the game and injuring honest players, AND all the while square's game masters do nothing to stop obvious "botters" who create characters to automatically fish, etc., then this is your game. you'll pull your hair out as these people make money taking the limited resources in the game that would otherwise be available to you, and if you report them to square the company will. do. nothing. about. them. period.

no thanks!

I Played in the Beta in this game and Its a complete amazement. It beats Asherons Call (anouther Major RPG online) and Everquest (anouther Major RPG online). If you like playing Final Fantasy games on consols this might not be something you like. This is a MMORPG (Massive multiplayer online role playing game) its name says alot its not something u can beat becuase its almost never ending. You can say you made the lvl cap but unless u cap every skill, ability and character and waited and played it till the very end you cannot say u beat it. (goodluck hehe) But I Have played Asherons call and Everquest both were great games and this one was great as well and will more than likly be better in the future. Hope this review helps for all the new people trying to start on MMORPG just remeber it takes time so dont give up fast! :D

A few nits, but overall an exremely solid game

I enjoy playing this game immensely, playing it more often than any other game. A lot of the things other people dislike, I found are the best parts of the game.

For example, players have to cooperate to get things done. Personally, I think that's good. There's very little actual role playing, but I'd rather get to know a real person than a flimsy myth.

There is a bit of a steep learning curve. At first, it's very hard to do anything. You will have to put some time into learning your way around, and it's best if you have real-life or online friends who already play.

People make a lot about the random dying. The thing is, at low levels, dying isn't a big deal. You come back, you lose a few experience points, big deal.

One nice thing is that there's always something new for you to do when you get to a higher level. Others have complained about all these quests that you are given that you cannot do. Well, these are things for you to work on, and as you work up, you will get more assignments. It's not like you get everything when you first start playing.

Yes, moving around is tedious. I agree that this is probably the most serious nit. But this does it make it more rewarding when you gain the ability to ride a Chocobo, ride an Airship, or learn a teleport spell.

I thought this game wouldn't be good for people who really demand instant gratification from a game. But my 9 year old son, who definitely is in that category, just bought a copy with his own money and plan to contribute some of his allowance to the monthly fee. (I'll help him with that, though, it is one of the pricier MMORPHs.)

Square Enix has been actively developing and maintaining the game. They respond to requests and complaints and add new features and special events constantly. You can bet there will be something special for Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, and so on.

How can this possibly be worse than Everquest or others?

How can this game be possibly worse than everquest or everquest online adventures for PS2. I see some reviews by people who are "not new to the mmorpg community" giving this bad reviews. It may have it's flaws, but compared to the other mmorpg games it still at least matches up, if not better. I have a feeling that alot of people do not like this game and other new mmorpg's such as SWG, because it is not as easy, if not impossibe to benefit from 24/7 gameplay (i.e. living at home with mom or unemployed), cheat and "twink" your character with items and other higher level characters you own, or use multiple computers and accounts in your home, dorm, LAN party, etc... I have been playing EQ for years and, although it is a good game, it is out-dated and has it's many, many flaws as a result of that. It has been my experience that the majority of people that enjoy EQ and have high level characters are people that have cheated in one way or another (using the above methods), some have even used credit cards to buy in-game items, in-game money, or bought items to trade for experience (orc belts) online. These new games put an end to that nonsense. These new mmorpg's such as FFXI, Horizons, and Star Wars Galaxies are putting an end to this and I think it's great. This is the new age of MMORPG's. Don't be fooled because these people give it bad reviews because they can't find an unfair advantage like with their high level everquest characters. Also, this game along with others use new job systems and break away from the old philosophy of hacking and slashing millions of creatures for weeks in order to benefit from any of the games features. In older mmorpg's such as everquest, everything, including finding resources for all job skills and professions, comes down to hacking and slashing millions of creatures. These new innovations are trying to put an end to that. You should not have to kill giant frogs to get the copper and ore you need to build a sword! since when do frogs carry copper and ore? Everything in the old games comes down to killing things. These new games put an end to that I I like it. I give it a thumbs up.

A True MMORPG Experience

Welcome to Vana'diel!
To totally new MMORPGrs and returning veterans of DAoC, EQ, SWG, and perhaps even iRO, and those who'd like a decent review-this one's for you.

Final Fantasy XI- Online- the first of the acclaimed series to bring the game to the net and across the world. Brought to you by Square Enix.

Let's begin with the beginning. Planning to buy the boxed goods? Included are four discs, as of yet. Installers for Tetra Master, FINAL FANTASY XI, and the expansion set, RISE OF THE ZILART. Hopefully, the marketers will not choose to separate any of these from each other any time later, for that would drop sales dramatically (?) Yes.

What's there to expect in this game? you ask before grabbing it off the game store shelf. Well, if you've played regular RPGs before, such as those on a console, you can expect many of the same elements:
-Hours upon hours of training and leveling up; however, this an MMORPG that is not too merciful of solo adventurers. Most of the time, you will be way better off in a party.
-Lots of walking, talking, journeying abroad, creating, destroying, being a samaritan; Technically speaking, you don't HAVE to do all of those, just a few. However, if you choose to skip doing the quests or missions, and aren't too keen of having a reputation as a handyman/woman, you're going to miss out on a huge part of this game.
-An aspiring, memorable life experience; The experience of playing in a stunningly beautiful world such as Vana'diel, meeting with other players from different parts of the globe, getting to know each other before having to log out, laughing, crying, falling out of your chair, pulling an all-nighter, watching in horror as your party gets annihilated by that damned monster that spawned out of nowhere; all of this encompasses the experience of long-term dedication. From the small amount of game play time I've accumulated so far (seven days) in about a period of one month, I can tell you this much:

Give MMORPGs a hundred years to evolve to suit everyone's tastes, and it will consume humanity; but, the aftertaste is something to be desired.

On a less serious note, make sure you meet the RECOMMENDED system requirements that is so conveniently placed on the bottom flap of the FINAL FANTASY XI box. Not only that, but toss away all future frustration dealing with in-game lag (and some serious cash) with the new NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 graphics card, and be on your way to new, thrilling adventures.

My last comment: Ask the Tarutarus to /panic; It's a once-in-a-lifetime oppurtunity! You'll absolutely love the game, and forget your momentous worries. Then it hits ya.

"What? It's 4 AM already ?!?!?!"

See you in-game, perhaps. My info is disclosed within the review specifics.

Nothing New for PC MMORPG Vets

So you've played all the popular MMORPGs and are looking for a new game, eh? Unless you're a gamer who falls in love with every MMORPG you play, you probably won't find anything in Final Fantasy XI that you didn't play in Everquest, Ultima Online, Asheron's Call or another PC MMORPG. Final Fantasy (FF) XI is the latest game in the famouse Japanese role-playing series and this time around, the developers decided to make FF an MMORPG. Gamers familiar with the FF line will recognize many famous trademarks such as chocobos or spell names. If you're not familiar with the FF games, you'll still have an easy time getting into the game but it's especially recommended for FF fans who have always wanted to experience the virtual worlds provided in the famous fantasy series with thousands of online gamers. One important thing to keep in mind if you purchase Final Fantasy XI is that this game was designed primarily for the PlayStation 2. PS2 users in Japan and North America play simultaneously with PC gamers in the world of FF XI which is unique for MMORPGs but unfortunately gives the PC version many limitations. For one thing, this game was not designed as a keyboard & mouse control system. My advice would be to pick up a PS to USB adapter so that you can use the popular PlayStation controller when you play because it's much easier to play with. The graphics in FF XI are also limited because it was meant to be experienced by console gamers. There are several aspects that slowdown the game which will go unnoticed by PS2 gamers but immediately noticed by PC MMORPG vets. An example is that walking into any shop requires the computer to load a whole new zone while most PC MMORPGs don't. If you've never played an MMORPG before, I would probably recommend Final Fantasy XI as a good one to start with, especially if you're a fan of the series. For people who are sick of the MMORPG genre, I wouldn't make this game the title you attempt to start fresh with.

Maybe it's fun but beware of a few things

If you're on the PC, I highly recommend you do a LOT of research to be sure this game is for you. I thought I had done enough but I was wrong. The control structure is not intuitive but not difficult to learn. The graphics seemed decent but I couldn't figure out how to modify them much myself. Leveling wasn't as tedious as some people said but I couldn't get into it enough to get very far.

What am I suggesting you beware of? There's a couple things.

1) If you cancel, you have 3 months to return and if you don't, you have to buy the game again. That's ridiculous. Just make it so people can make another account. How they think that's fair is beyond me. Maybe it's smart but would you buy the game again if it compelled you to take a break? As it stands since I know I won't be playing again in the next three months, I'm just throwing it away. Glad I wasn't sweating the cash to try this out.

2) It's a slow paced game at first so be sure to have a LOT of patience. If you don't, you'll have wasted 50 bucks (as I did). Be sure that you're ready for a time crunch-- and I really mean it.

I don't think this game was bad by any means but I'm not sure that I would recommend it. In fact, I will be telling any of my friends or people I meet to not bother until the next gens are out but if you must go for it, go in warned that unless you're on the PS2, this might be a waste of money.

Not a typical Final Fantasy game

I bought this game because I love Final Fantasy games. I played the game for a month and thoroughly enjoyed it. But it is very different from most Final Fantasy games. First of all, it's a Massive Multi-player Online Game, which you have to pay a monthly subscription (the first month is free.) This makes the game amazingly complex and interactive, but I feel that it looses the story in the process. There is no linear story of good fighting evil. I like Final Fantasy X & X-2 so much because it was like watching/playing a movie, this game is nothing like that. It would be a good alternative to Everquest, and I think many people that play Final Fantasy games would like this game, just be warned that it is a completely different game.

A total fanboys point of view

As as huge fan of the final fantasy series ive been a massive skeptic with everything that Square has release since final fantasy 8. That game was a huge letdown for me. Ive hated every single last game since 8. I felt like all they were going for was flash since then. Big summon spell, walk around, talk, very linear storyline. This game is the polar opposite. The gameplay system is so immersive you lose HOURS of time playing this game and i love every minute of it. The game is a bit difficult to learn and is definitely not for everyone. But if your a fan of final fantasy 1 through 7 you will love the gameplay system in this game. Im a level 9 white mage right now and love accompanying partys. Its been a great experience and at least give the game its shot, the first month of play is free so youve got nothing to lose. dont like it? Send it back to amazon and get your money back.

THE BEST MMORPG THERE IS

A lot of people are not liking this game because it is ether online or the fact that it has not much of a storyline. The Final Fantasy series is great for the storylines and FFXI dosnt do much in this catigory. But I dont think of it a Final FAntasy XI I think of it as Final Fantasy Online. But the fact of having a final Fantasy Online is something truly remarkable trust me. Meeting other people in this game is a great experience and a game that is so addictive it can suck the life out of you if you are not carefull. Though if you are serious about this purchase. I perfer the ps2 version over the pc. I own both versions and the ps2 version run a little smoother than the pc version. Though the graphics are no where near as great as th pc is the game moves better on the ps2. But if you can not affored the ps2 setup for it. Then the pc is a great choice for one of the greatest Online experiences there is.
