Good action game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 3
Date: April 12, 2003

Pros:
-The storyline is interesting.
-The graphics are very good.
-Customizing your ship with weapons, shields, thrusters, missles, etc... is a lot of fun. There are a ton of ways to costumize your ship and there are many ships you can buy with different statistics.
-The game has more missions than anyone would care to complete. The game is virtually endless (though the game does get much easier when you have the best ship and weapons).
-The universe is very large and beautiful. Did I mention the graphics ;)

Cons:
-Multiplayer could have been much better. I wish MS would have put at least one server for people to play on. The servers are run by players so expect downtime and problems.

Overall:
-The game requires little strategy, but the gameplay is addicting. There is always action going on, but you can take a break in friendly bases. The single player storyline and related missions are very well done, but don't expect much from multiplayer. Multiplayer is pretty ... for the fact that servers are publically run and there really is not much to do except kill other players or do the single player missions (hoping that the server will be there the next day with your character).

I gave it 4 stars for the lack of multiplayer options & gameplay.

Fun but has some holes

I've never been good at joystick based flight sims so the mouse for me (unlike many other reviewers here apparently) was kinda nice. The main story however isn't up to par.
1) it's too short
2) it's not all that good
3) it gets in the way of doing things on your own
In order to rise to the next level (which enables you to buy better weaps) you MUST play the main story most of the time. There are places built into the main plot where other main characters have to "do some digging" allowing you to do what you want but that only lasts for a brief moment. In order to buy the better ships and weaps you have to complete the main story. But once you do there's not much point to buying the killer weaps (if you can't use the biggest baddest weaps in the end battle what's the point? Yeah you can now blow up fighters with 2 hits but that gets awfully boring awfully fast) Good game if you enjoy blasting things (which I happen to) but not if you're looking for some real plot content.

Game Good for Younger Players

Note that there is a demo available for this game, and you will definitely want to download and play it before buying the game.

Freelancer might be a good game for players in the 6-12 year old range. The violence is all indirect (ship-to-ship, rather than person-to-person), and the game dynamics are simple: mouse-driven spaceflight and an economic system with one decision point. One possible area where the game might not work for younger people is that there is quite a bit of down-time, as moving from point A to point B can easily consume 30% to 50% of total playtime. So if your youngster has a short attention span, this one might not keep them occupied enough.

For more advanced gamers, I think the game will not have enough depth to last very long. There are a lot of places to go in the game universe, the graphics are good, and the single player game is very open-ended so that you can fly an unlimited number of missions as you evolve your character, earn money, improve your ship, and so forth. I personally thought the voice acting was fine.

But the economic system is very simplistic. Every item you buy takes up the same amount of room in your ship. (You can carry 20 of something, whether it is refrigerators or marbles.) This means that you always want the item with the largest profit margin per unit.

The simplicity of the flight system didn't bother me. I have played other games with very simple flight systems (such as Magic Carpet), and have had a lot of fun. In some cases, a simpler system is better. But there was something missing in the Freelancer experience, I'm not sure what. It just never really excited me.

My other complaint was that I spent too much time moving around. Transitioning between space and planet-side, and moving from one waypoint to the next probably consumed a third or a half of my total game time. The game does have good visuals, and there are quite a few random encounters with enemy fighters (more than I really cared for), but ultimately I wound up feeling bored.

Your mileage may vary, which is one of the great things about demos. Freelancer's demo is high quality, and it gives you a solid look at the game, so you can decide for yourself if you like it or not.

Excellent in the short term, flawed in the long term

First of all graphics and audio are top notch, although you'll get the same lines when you are in search of a mission on star or planet bases. There's not much character development nor interaction .
Despite these flaws I totally am for the control design. It takes a while to get the hang of it, but soon you will see that this was one of the better design choices.
The main plot is very good, although you can complete the main story in about 10 to 20 hours.
The open ended nature of the game leaves something to be desired. You know that you'll get the same missions over and over again. Do not get me wrong, but I found that after the main story ended there is not many things to do, which you haven't done before. Still, there is always plenty of opportunity to upgrade your ship...
Perhaps the designers should have given the option to purchase a base or to run your own trade shop.
As it stands, FREELANCER is stil a very good game but flawed in its open ended approach.

A far cry from Privateer, but a few nice points.

Some very good things, some very bad things about this game.

The box lies. The plot isn't optional. You have to start the plot just to get a ship, and you have to play the plot to get access to ships and equipment. You don't get to decide who your friends and enemies are, because it's based on who's ships you destroy, and that's decided by the plot, because they make you play the plot. Where you are is decided by which plot missions you're between at any given time. As such, you need to have played through the entire game to get access to the entire galaxy, which, admittedly, is impressively large. But they lied, right there on the box, just to get Privateer fans to spend money on it. It's not like they were vague. They said something that wasn't true. That really bothers me, to the point where I would hesitate to buy another Microsoft Game.

Pros? The mouse interface, which almost made me not buy it in the first place, is actually pretty cool once you get used to it. It's a little disappointing though, because people (like me) with programmable joysticks don't get to use them. Also, while the on-planet interface (clearly a Privateer ripoff) looks no better than PII, the space graphics are gorgeous. I mean it. It's a beautiful game to fly around in.

If you have a good system and want some eye candy, and like playing the plot, buy this game. If you want games with better graphics and true open-ended realistic non-plot driven gameplay, you can.. you can.. well, I dunno. Start a software company and make one. I'll buy it.

Better than average

The main plot is somewhat repetitive, but it's entertainng. The open-eneded nature of the gameworld is really unlocked only when you finish the main story in that at several points along your advance, ment you're required to complete specific missions. That means if you're tired ofplaying themain storyline and just want to go cruise on your own, you're stuck under a ceiling until you advance themain plot. Once you've finished the storyline advancem, ent's no problem.

What makes this game appealing is that it's a great space sim with enough role=playing to keep it out of meiocrity and does NOT need a joystick nor do you miss it: a mouse and keyboard work perfectly.

The graphics are nice, the combat is fun and varied, and shipping goods between systems is fun too. Not the best game in the owrld, but definitely not one to be written off too soon.

Twenty bucks? Yeah, I think it's worth it. Overall, not a bad game at all.

No limits!

This is the freeist game I have ever played or heard of. The only problem with it is that the missions aren't different enough. But this is the best game I have ever played. Still I think that Starlancer was more involving. But overall great game!

Great game with fantastic graphics. Want to play it all the time. Only problem is my mom keeps telling me I need to take a break from the computer!

Great, addictive game... But constrictive

This is the best game I've ever played, It has great graphics for it's age, it's very open-ended but a lot of it is similar, your character only says the same things over and over and the side-missions are all alike while not being exactly the same. It's a great game if you want to just keep going and explore a universe. I find myself coming back to this game over and over again because it just appeals to all my various interests, trading/economy, exploration, blowing things up, and law.

I can get around most of the faults in the game but I just wish there was an option to skip the storyline. I have a harddrive failure and it erases all my games and having to do the entire storyline over again gets annoying. It's fun the 5 times but after that you're basically just going through the motions which can still be fun but it's not something I want to do over and over.

All-in-all it's a fun game that you can play for years without getting bored of but with downsides.

The most repetitive RPG ever made

First, I will state right up front that it is pretty and the space combat engine is pretty nice to fly. Having said that, I will have to point out that all the combats play out basically the same. Every mission you get from the NPCs is essentially the same. All your canned face-to-face interactions with the NPC are pretty much the same. In about two hours of playing this, you will already be extremely tired of the repetitious conversations. The combat will hold its fascination a bit longer, but in the end, that too will start to seem really repititious. In essence... As a space sim, it lacks complexity and detail. As an RPG, it lacks depth and variety. This game was truly disappointing to me after reading all these glowing reviews.
