awesome game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

After playing the demo, I was hooked, and I bought Freelancer along with the strategy giude.

I have to say, the single player game was absolutely incredible. It took me about 13 hours to complete, so there is definitely a long value to this game. The equipment upgrade, trading, dogfights and rich story line was excellent, although upon completing the single player missions, I was left with nothing to do... :(

In many games, multiplayer is the best part, but I found that there was a very small community of online players, and very limited possibilites.

This game was excellently created, but has little replay value after 15+ hours of play. Although maybe too short, I loved every minute of what there was.

Space Combat is Alive and Well!!

This game isn't Wing commander or even Privatter(although it tries to be) but it is better than any space combat game to make it to thw market in the last 4 years. Keep in the mind this is just my own opinion.

You're name is Edison Trent, when your home is blown up you are left stranded without a ship(flat broke) on Planet Manhaten in the Liberty system. You are forced take jobs in order to survive hence the title of the game.

Something strange starts to happen, other surviors of the attack start to vanish or die in "accidents" and you start to wonder what the hell is going on.

You'll find out

The Game
Now I know those of you who are used to using the joystick are scared about this whole mouse control concept and I know that the joystick is a sacred cow and you don't feel someone should go around shooting it. The concept takes a little getting used to but it does offer you more control over your ship.

Cons
The Graphics need some work
Conversations get very repeditive
While the cutsceans are impressive some of the vocice acting needs a little work.
For those of you who have your heart set on a vast multiplayer enviroment don't bother. in the final product it is almost redundant.

I'm still giving the game 5 stars because it is just that fun to play.

Addicting, but...

I bought this game, I've played most of the way through the single player, and I'm currently finding very little reason to do the multiplayer. Here's why. All the non-story-driven missions are repetetive.

The story is great, the missions that are a part of the story are great, and have some pretty good range. You'll get to fly escort to ships, scan cargo of ships, run for your life... It's not bad so far. What sucks is every side quest style mission is the same: Go here, shoot down everything in sight. There might be a base to destroy or someone to capture or assassinate, but it's done in the same way, blow it up. I would have liked to see missions where you can escort a convoy, run supplies, perform reconnaissance, stuff like that. The variation is a little lacking. I don't know, maybe there's more variety in the multiplayer mode, but I just don't think it's too likely. Otherwise, this is a seriously addicting game. After work, I've been playing it almost nonstop. Check it out.

Great fun

When I first read about the game I was really excited and when the demo came I got it as quickly as possible. I played that demo about 15 times because I had so mnuch fun. Then I bought it and even more fun! The story may be short but it's very cinematic and full of little twists. The combat is fun I think and I personally feel the mouse control is better than using a joystick because its more accurate. I didn't let the graphics affect my rating because I just turned antialising on and it looked a little better and Digital Anvil started making this game 4 years ago!
All in all I REALLY enjoyed the game and would recommend to anyone that isn't really picky about games.

This is the greatest space shooter since Tie Fighter

... This game rocks. I've spent hours playing this and it never gets boring. You can trick out your space ships with tons of weapons and anihilate enemies. You can also attack captial ships but you'd better get your hide out of there after you do. You can go scavenging in junk fields and mount assaults on Rebel outposts. They could of made the interations on the planets and stations a little better but it's that that big of an issue. I need to play it right now after writing this. If you buy this you won't be sorry.

Amazing

Now, I am still waiting for the game to arrive, should be here tomorrow. But I have been playing the demo. And for what i see, it is truly awsome. Its almost like GTA in space. If you work for one group, your reputation will go down for another group, depending on what you do. If you rescue a pilot from a loosing battle, your rep will go up for the branch that he works for, or atleast thats what happened for me.

This game reminds me allitle bit of the Fantasy game in Ender's game, and Ender's Shadow. It keeps changing.

It is a must have for people that like a very large, changing game.

Freelancer offers a lot for insane gamers. It will take a long time to beat and is sort of hard. It was a very unresrtictive story mode so you can do what ever you want. This is a must buy game!

This game should be Privateer 3

One of my favorite games of all time is Privateer from Origin, and this game reminds me of it, it's an awesome game. It has the touch of Chris Roberts (the mastermind of Wing Commander), and there's no other space simulation better than the ones that Origin created, and at last something worth of my attention in this genre.

If I have any complaint for this title, I would have liked to generate my own character.... (grumble, grumble)

That being said, Freelancer is just good ol' shoot-em-up/RPG/trade simulation gaming. Visually, I'm reminded of the displays from Bang! Gunship Elite and/or Colony Wars, and the gameplay is reminiscent of Syd Meier's Pirates. It's meat & potatoes gaming... but the whole is definitely more than the sum of it's parts. Nothing here stands out more than any other space sim, but the depth and size of the game universe will humble you. That's the way it's supposed to be.

AND... you can play darn near the whole game using just the mouse. Lazy armchair captains (that's me!) Rejoice!!

If you're looking for that old-school Traveller RPG adventure sim, give this a shot. It's easy to get into. And it's very large.

Best Space Game Ever

45 systems to explore
160+ bases and planets to land on
30+ ships to fly and upgrade
37+ commodities to trade
Hundreds of different weapons to use

Gameplay:
The game handles very well; you do not often see a space sim that is mouse controlled which equals great fun. You learn how to fly and to use docking rings, trade lanes, jump gates and other things during your Single player career. Very cool way to implement a tutorial.

Factions:
There are many different factions in Freelancer, from the beginning, some will love you and others will hate you. You can divide all the factions into 3 major groups:

Law Enforcement (House police, Military, Bounty Hunters etc.)
Corporations (Gas Miners Guild, Spa & Cruise, etc.)
Criminals (Liberty Rogues, Outcasts, Corsairs, etc.)

Trading:
Each ship has a different amount of cargo space, fighters have low amounts of cargo space, while freighters can fit much more cargo, a freighter is essential to make a good profit while you are trading. Trading is quite simple, you buy goods on a planet or base for a low price, then travel to another planet or base in another system and sell them with profit.

Mining:
Mining is quite simple; you just fly towards a mineable area on your map, hang dead in space and shoot little asteroids that come floating by.

Scavenging:
You can also go around and search for old derelict ships, which contain special guns, missiles, mines etc. and cargo. They are scattered throughout the systems in nebulas, asteroid fields and other hard to find places.

NPC's:
FL also features a large amount of interface with NPCs (Non Player Characters). You meet them everywhere, in bars, equipment dealers, ship dealers and commodity traders. You can engage in a conversation with people in bars, they can tell you rumors, give you missions, bribe factions for you or you can even buy information on planets and shipwreck locations. When you go to an equipment dealer, ship dealer or commodity trader there will be a person there you simply click on them to buy stuff etc.

Graphics:
The graphics in this game are absolutely stunning even when played on the lowest resolution (800 x 600 pixels). The game utilizes DirectX 9, and does so very nicely. There is a lot of detail in this game; you can shoot off other ship's guns, shields, wings, and various other parts of the ship. There is smoke coming out of badly damaged ships and they often try to run away from you as well. It is amazing to watch a battle between two or sometimes more factions going on from a distance, you will see missiles flying around in all directions, ships shooting everything that moves you will even hear communications from the battling ships.

Using trade lanes and jump gates is also an amazing experience, the animations that you experience are just amazing, traveling though tunnels of light really adds to the game.

Mod's:
Freelancer has a ton of mod's for it just search for Swat-Portal or The Lancers Reactor both sites are fan sites and both have a lot of information on the game including hundreds of modifications.

In all Freelancer is the best Space Game Ever.
