Very well done!

I picked this up about a week ago, and just beat it this afternoon. Wow, talk about one heck of fun ride!

The game has a common progression.. you start at the bottom of the heap with a tiny cheap ship, and as the game progresses you use your money to buy new ships and upgrade weapons/shields/thrusters etc however you see fit. Its well done and never at any point felt too powerful for the battles or overwhelmed. You can also use a tractor beam in the middle of a dogfight to grab nanobots or shield charges (from the debris of annihilated enemies) to help you continue the fight or goods you can sell at a nearby station.

The whole immersive level of the game is pretty awesome, you'll frequently visit a nearby bar to look for missions. There you can also scan the news channels, pick up on rumours, or slip someone a little cash to fix your reputation with a certain group. If you're getting tired of fighting you can take a turn at transporting goods.. using the tried and true rule of buy low and sell high.

As for gameplay itself, its pretty fun. I guess some were complaining about the no joystick support.. but the mouse and keyboard setup is incredibly smooth and intuitive. The dogfights are incredibly fun, full of flashing laser beams, mines, missiles, debris, and explosions. In asteroid fields you can use asteroids for cover and swing around one to come up behind the person who was chasing you. Every fight was its own fun experience and I NEVER felt bored at any point. Later on in the campaign you start flying into places which gives a Star Wars Ep 4 feel to it as you weave throughout the insides of whatever you are infiltrating at the time (I'm trying not to give too much of the campaign away).

Overall, this game was a BLAST to play, had incredibly good graphics out in space (I was amazed at how many beautiful but different each system was), intuitive, and easy to learn and start having fun. I'd recommend it to anyone who is in the mood for a good space combat with an immersive world and fun plot.

Great Game So Far

The demo is excellent. The random missions add so much more game time into the game. The area you get to fly is is huge. The customization of your ship is good too. All these factors will make the game last a long time.

The 'no joystick' isn't so bad. I was use to the mouse the first couple minutes. But it would be nice if the developer could add joystick to it. The cockpit view (Ctrl+V) isn't so nice.

To sum it up, so far the game is great - graphic wise and gameplay.

A Little Mislead

I gave this 5 Stars because, heck, it is fun.. But I was a little mislead. Somewhere, I read that it was based on the adventures of Han Solo. Now, this guy's name is Trent.. Never mind..
Anyway, cool game. Looks great, runs great.. Easy to get lost in space, though. I'd recommend it to people of old school flight games.. even though the mouse flight is a little difficult to get used to.

Just what I've been waiting for.

In my various musings on what I would like in a game, I devised somthing so much like this one that I don't remember what it was any more. Once you get through the single player campaign you are free to roam a seemingly endless universe. Complete with Bounty Hunters, rouge corporations, pirates, and attempts at government controll. There is also a seemingly endless selection of weapons and ships to choose from, if you can find them! I have logged over 100 hours of time on one game and I suspect I have yet to discover 3/4 of the jumphole pathways and hidden bases. Without multiplayer however, the un-ending freelancin starts to get old.

Privateer On Steroids

After the catastrophe of Privateer II, I figured that the original Privateer was as good as it gets. I was wrong.

I've been playing computer games for decades, and own quite a few that I've considered addictive. However, Freelancer takes the title as the best I've ever played.

For those who are concerned with the lack of a joystick, I must say that the mouse interface is very intuitive. However, I strongly recommend having a wheel mouse for this game, as the wheel can be used for throttle control.

Although I'm still in my first campaign, I foresee limitless replayability, as the player's available options are significantly based on his/her reputation with factions that vary from police to bounty hunters to rogues to merchants.

Oh, and the graphics are fantastic. Enjoy!

A Good Game for the Price

I wasn't to sure about this game when I first tried the demo version. Actually, I played all of about 5 minutes and said "not for me"!! Well, I heard some good things about it and decided to drop the bucks and give it a try. Definitely, glad I did. Most of the game info is noted in the other reviews so I won't bore you with that. One note, there is a story line you can follow or you can change it around some by deciding on who you want your character to be--the basic good guy or the villian type. The graphics are great--and I only have a PT 3 900 with a Nvidia G-force 3 game card. The universe is worth the buy. I'm not finished with the game yet, and I have flown through some spectacular space scenary. The missions get a little slow at times, if you keep the same type of ship--ie. fighter or cargo. However, I have found taking on the roll of pirate, and blasting away at certain cargo ships fun. I have chosen who I want to be friends with and who I want to tick off. The next time I play, I intend on changing roles again. Hope this is somewhat helpful. I say it's worth the dollars to buy the game.

What a great game!

One of the most realistic games in the history of space games. Unlike many other space sims, Freelancer is an easy game to learn but hard to master. Freelancer is one of the few games that can totally immerse the player in the game, unlike many other space sims the game doesn't revolve around the player. Police check other ships for illegal goods, and as you travel through sapce you can hear CPUs talking to each other. One thing Freelancer could have improved on was the graphics. Planetary graphics are breathtaking, stars REALLY look like stars. In dog fights, however, ships are pretty much reduced to a targeting circle. All in all though the graphics are absouloutely stunning. Multiplayer is also excellent with many servers to choose from.
If you like dogfights or if you like to trade or if you simply like to explore, Freelancer is the game for you.

Great Game!

Yay,yet another space sim. One thing:Freelancer is the best space sim I've seen on the PC.
Freelancer,as the name suggests, let's you have a tremendous amount of freedom. You can just flay around in hundreds of miles of space. It's addictive. This game also has great graphics and animation, voice acting, and controls (except for the stupid mouse control).

However, you you are going to play this game on a laptop, you'll have some problems. Not technical problems, but control problems. In this game, you have to steer your ship using the mouse. This is extremely hard when you use a laptop track pad.If you really want to play this on a laptop, then buy a real mouse (for your laptop).

One good thing about this game,is that you don't need a powerful supercomputer to play it.I ran this game on a old Celeron 767 Mhz Emachines, and it ran really well. The only thing that you might have a problem with is having a good video card.If you have a old video card, then the text in the game (of which there is a lot of) will be unreadable.

PROS:
Great graphics
Great sound
A massive world to explore
Totally addictive
Don't need a powerful computer to run on

CONS:
Totally addictive
Need a good video card

This game is awesome!! Beyond belief!! If you are looking for something that can keep you busy for a long time. This game is perfect! I can tell you that there are roughly 30 systems you travel through, inside one large galaxy. Now, to give you an idea how big the game is. It can take you about 10-15min to get from one extreme to the other. The Single player and Online multiplayer are seperate, so if you beat single player, decide to go online, well, you start over. i recommend starting in the server called "raw" I only play there. Anyways, this game is certainly worth the MONEY. so buy it now!!

Simple and Addictive

While most gamers (including myself) have become a bit jaded with all the bells and whistles out there, all the convoluted plots, etc....sometimes you just want a game that is fun, easy to use and play, that isn't so technical and pissy that you get a bug if you look at it the wrong way. This is that game. It's online options are limited, and it's storyline is simple but not boring. The ease of use with the controls and the sheer fun of playing a dogfight style space shooter through GORGEOUS spacescapes makes this game one of the best of it's kind currently. It's a game I've finished several times and still find myself coming back to. Unlike many games, this one is still playable after you win the main story. My only regret here is that there isn't more of it, of that it isn't likely to receive a sequel. It'd sure get my vote if it did. For simple fun, buy this game.
