I was a big fan of the Wing Commander games, and always wanted to see a Wing Commander style game that was open-ended. Well here it is, Freelancer is an addictive game full of hours upon hours of gameplay. I only have a few problems with the game (1) It's anoying that you can't play any jobs if the story mode is active unless you advance to the next level. (2) After you reach level 8 I beleave or 7, suddenly everyone want's to kill you and this can make the game very frustrating, if you just want to explore, because they always atack you when you're miles from a jump gate, and have no shields left. (3) Most of the ships only let you carry about 15 shield batterys at a time which last about a minute in an intence dog fight against 10 fighters and 2 battle ships! Other then that the game is great. I highly recomend it to any fan of the Wing Commander games, or anyone who enjoys open-ended games that give you almost total freedom to roam.

After reading some of the reviews written by serious gamers, I was surprised that here the game was treated with favor. Since it looks like the game is well covered, I will keep it short. The graphics are great. Good storyline. Lots of action. The race is tough but if you practice for a while you can get it. I thought some of the later firefights were worse than the race. Only piece of advice for the fights is use your thrusters and keep moving. If you like to sit down and play for 30 minutes to an hour with great return play, this game is for you. There is another side of this game that actually is the best part and that is internet play. After you have mastered all the aspects of the various spaceships and their weapons then you are ready to play online. If you thought the computer was tough, try playing live players. On the internet this game is alive and well and prospering. There are 100's of games to choose from and people from all over the world play this game 24 hours a day. Kind of makes you wonder with all of this gameplay why it went out of print. I've played this game for years and have seen nothing like it anywhere else. The play is open ended. People run missions, explore the various systems, barter for weapons, and quite often shoot at anyone in range. The longer I play this game the better I like it.
Not bad

I have the demo version of the game, which is pretty comprehesive. I enjoyed the game a lot, but it isn't a very accurate sim. All the ships act the same, doesn't matter if it's a big freighter or a little fighter they are all the same in agility. The AI isn't very good either, they just are stupid what else can be said. However, the storyline is pretty cool and I like how it's laid out and how open ended it is. If they combinded Freespace and Freelancer you would have the best space sim ever created. Oh and I would give it 3 and a half stars.

I have been playing this game for about 4 years, now, and I still love it. The online games offer an incredible ammount of new experiences with the Player Modifiable system.
There are many mods on different servers available and easily installable.
Provides endless hours of entertainment!!!
Awesome but a needs more content

Freelancer is an awesome game. The gameplay is incredibly addictive and the control system is really nicely user friendly. I had a great time playing through the single player campeign. My only gripe about the game is the shortness of the SP campeign I got through it in 3 days. Once done with the single player campeign there is loads to do but after a while. I had max level and plenty of money and the best ship and the best guns and there was really nothing left to do. Apparently there are some huge mods that add loads of content to the game, maybe they would spruce it up a bit.
Really though, this game is awesome and I would suggest it to anyone. I don't usually play space sims but the role playing elements and the awesome control system in Freelancer made it a whole new experience.
It's been several years and I'm still looking for a better game!

There are quite a few space sims and flying sims in general, but Freelancer is unique. Here's what makes this game unique:
Online co-op multiplayer.
Dedicated server that YOU can own and control.
Real time missions and flying.
Many mods.
There are a number of multiplayer space sims and flying sims that are good (and also very old). Some decent ones included the Star Wars X-wing/Tie fighter series and Freespace series, as well as a number of WW2 based games. However, all are mission based, so you have to select a mission, ready the mission, then launch, wait for it to end, rinse and repeat. Freelancer isn't like that. Your buddies (or enemy players, for that matter), can be in the middle of selecting a mission, can be retrofitting their ship, trading goods, blasting baddies, or being a wingman for you, all at the same time, so this game best approaches a MMORPG (without the RP, I suppose). Oh, if only they'll release the next version of this game!
Wish they came out with part 2

I like this game. There are sites devoted to modding and what ever you could think of which has helped make it live a very long life.
This game is very stable and intuitive. It's the best space simms so far that have played.
The only big disappointment is that there is no Freelancer two.

This game does take alot of time when playing but if you like space and you like to buy your own spacecrafts then this is the game for you. I really liked this game, and the game came in real good condition. No scratches to be found. I rated this game 5 stars overall because I personaly love this game. But i rated fun level to be only 4 stars because it does take alot of time going from place to place and the planets have nowhere really to go to. Other then that the game is perfect.

If you just want to trade, the story can get in the way, but the game is a lot of fun if you can play along with the story line. Unlike Privateer, it doesn't take forever to upgrade your ship, and there are lots of ships to choose from. Some are heavy haulers with turrets and lots of armour, while others are lite, nimble little scouts, with little armour, little firepower, be great maneuverability. The combat situations really depend on you knowing how to make the best use of your ship.
The story line is interesting, but seems very linear. The story unfolds in a way that helps you find you way around and which areas are safe for your skill level.
Good game overall, even as old as it is, if you want a space trader, this is about the only choice.

Freelancer is a great game with replay value. Had difficulty access MMORPG servers, still trying to find out how, that is kind of dissatisfying, but the graphisc and ease of play are very intriguing. I play this game often. One of the best Space games I have played.
