I've been playing a whole bunch of other games lately, and this one took a back burner. I played it for about 4 hours or so and I was starting to get bored. There is a lot of detail and involvement in creating and setting up your character. In the end it's an OK RPG, maybe it works for some people, but not for me. I'm also playing Mass Effect and Bioshock right now and both are waaaay funner. I went to my local used games shop, and they only offered me 8 bucks for my copy of Elder Scrolls IV. They had a lot of them on the shelf.

Boring!!

I bought this game because of its great reviews. However, I'm surprised at the lack of fighting and basic physics of the movement. The world his huge...yeah, great, but the simple movement is so monotonous and slow. Why can't we get the movement from Zelda? I just don't see what the hype is all about.

Not a fan

Of course this is my review, my opinion. This game pisses me off because it's obviously high regarded and loved by all, yet I cant find out why. Gamespot gave it a 9.5. I can't seem to figure out what I'm missing. Just sheer size, mass and freedom of a game does not make it fun to play (to me). You will walk around this huge world and encounter only a handful of enemies, all very weak. The enemies difficulties do not seem to change depending on where you are on the map either. You can investigate caves, but there are only a few weak enemies in them, very little treasure, and nothing exciting happens, ever! The battle controls are clunky, he seems to swing the sword so slow and delayed. You can heal but it doesn't seem to do anything. And gaining experience depends on using the skills that you attribute in the beginning of the game, not fighting enemies like traditional RPG's. Yes you can steal and virtual do anything you want, but that gets old after a while. The fact that you can travel from virtually any point in the map automatically, takes away from the game big time, traveling is a huge part of RPG's for me. Also, If the action gets too tough for you just go into the menu and slide the difficulty meter to easy, WTF is that?!?
Having played about 20 hours, it just wasn't fun for me (needless to say). I am not a deviant, usually when games have such ridiculously positive ratings like this one, I end up loving them like everyone else, which is why I'm so vexed!
The graphics are indeed very good with a real-time environment, the sun sets and the moon comes out etc, and all the NPC's do their own thing. This game does not play out like a typical RPG for me, it seemed more like a virtual reality game, a Sims game.
I love the FF series, exploring caves, fighting monsters, buying and selling weapons and armor, which is all in this game, although a huge problem for me is that it lacks incentive.

Good but Flawed

I am writing this review in hopes that the makers of Oblivion will see it. I am leaving out the pros of the game (of which there are many), and will focus specifically on a few main flaws that, if corrected, would make this the best game of all time. Here they are:

1. Creature/item leveling system- having your opponents and items you find level up with you has to be the worst idea ever in an RPG. It makes all the monsters and treasure totally generic and makes you feel like your character never gets any better, not to mention taking away the fun of trying to fight creatures that are far beyond your level.

2. Where's the dragons?- there are basically no large monsters in this game, including dragons (what a travesty!) and most of what you fight are humanoid or the occasional evil bear. I explored the land looking for wyverns or other such magical creatures to no avail. This seriously detracts from the fantasy element of the game.

3. Landscape and dungeons way too generic- what's the point of having a huge map (which actually isn't that big) when all the dungeons and ruins look essentially the same? I quickly lost interest in searching the land for these sights, especially when all the treasure and enemies you find are all relative to your level and not set.

4. No realistic Body Damage- I understand that this is an RPG, but it would be nice to have a head shot with my bow do more damage than normal. I'll never forget the look of an orc I was fighting with at least 10 arrows sticking out of his head and most of his HP still intact. If they are going to make an action based first person RPG, they should include differential body damage.

5. Where are the children?- There is not one child in this whole game. I've looked. This makes all the towns and cities you visit seem that much more lifeless and dull. Not to mention that the NPC's in town and cities are not very interesting and the dialogue system you use to gain information is really lame. I would rather it was like Morrowind where you have to read alot.

Overall, this is a great game, but with these flaws and others it is not 5 star. Once you realize how generic everything is in this game, it doesn't seem as big or exciting as it does at first, and for me there is basically no replay value. Can't wait for Elder Scrolls 5.

The best RPG game ever

This is my plea on behalf of all amazonians to all marketplace sellers. Offer this game WITH Shivering Isles for a bundle price! NO ONE is doing this. It is killing me. Thanks.

So promising, yet so bland

I first got to know about Oblivion because of all the hype that surrounded it. Being a gamer since the long gone days of the Atari 2600, I don't tend to get caught up in the usual hype. But the more I learned about Oblivion, the more it seemed like the perfect RPG.

When you start off, it really feels like that perfect game. The world, even if the map size isn't exactly impressive, seems so huge and open to possibilities. NPCs feel alive, going about their daily routines, and remaining forever dead if you kill them. I avoided the main quest for a while, and experimented with the side quests. In time, you begin to notice quite a few disappointing problems. Some side quests are really interesting, but the overwhelming majority of them is nothing but go-there-and-fetch-me-that as one reviewer already mentioned. It feels empty, after a while.

So I moved to the guilds. The quests are usually a bit better, but there's absolutely no space for role playing. If you finish a certain guild's quests and become their leader, all you get is a few advantages and that's it. It certainly doesn't feel like you're a powerful leader. There's nothing else to the guilds but getting to their top. It's very frustrating.

My biggest disappointment, however, had to be the main quest. Apart from making you close the same four or five "Oblivion Gates" all over the map, there's nearly nothing else to it. Go there. Get this. Fight this. Go there. You beat the game. There's no effort at all for you to actually care for the (few) characters involved.

It's that overall feeling of blandness that killed the game to me. You can play for a decade (in game) and Kvatch - the city that is destroyed at the very beginning - won't be rebuilt, even if you rid it of its troubles. Its inhabitants will remain camped outside the city forever. After hours of gameplay, you begin to realize how little effects your actual choices have over the game world. There's just no real meaningful choices to be made in Oblivion. It's very disappointing.

And then there's the levelling system. Being somewhat of a "power gamer", I wanted to level up as perfectly as possible. Well, unfortunately, it ultimately involves choosing as "major" skills the ones you don't use much. And still, you have to keep track of how many times you improved each skill to be sure. Having to walk around jumping and healing gets boring after a while, too. The scaled world is also really annoying, as there are no tougher and easier places. It's just bland.

One thing can be said in favour of Oblivion: its world is beautifully designed and carefully detailed. As many reviewers have said, sometimes you'll just stop to watch the world. Not many games can do that. It's just a shame that the amazing amount of genuine effort put into it ended up creating a generic, bland game. A game that's beautiful, very promising at first, but very disappointing in the end. I'd still recommend it, I had some fun with it, but rest assured you won't be playing this game around this time next year.

Bang for your buck.

This is the kind of game that makes you want to read the LoTR books. Except you can't because you're spending all your time playing this game. And there's a lot of it to play. I've spent at least 40 hours playing this game and I haven't even done anything except talk and spend my money. Just like work! Am I right?
