No Other Games Needed

I have owned Oblivion for several months now. I am still playing and love it. I don't touch my other games and am considering cancelling my Gamefly subscription until I can stop playing this game.

Oblivion is not the typical roll playing game. No longer are hours wasted walking around trying to figure out what needs to be done or where to go. There is a great navigation system that provides a nonintrusive "compass" that points to your next objective. You can also change this objective to another quest you want to follow or set your own makers. Another attraction is that once you visited an area you can "warp" to that area if you desire. I rarely do because I enjoy the game so much that I feel like I might miss something.

The graphics are outstanding, with the exception of the character faces. They seem lifeless and a little repetitive. I also find it odd that in such a vast world there isn't a single attractive person, but I digress. The music is so good I have wondered if a soundtrack is available. The classic score builds tention when needed and provides a serene feeling while observing the beautiful world.

The story is compelling and encourages the player to push on. The detail in the story line and of the world itself are astonishing. There are literally over a hundred books within the game that you can read about the places or people in the game. The side quest are optional, but I find it too hard to resist them. Most are fun and add to the gameplay experience.

The fighting and spell system are more than adequate. In fact it is the best battle system I have ever played in a RPG. The equipmemt and inventory is easily handled and does not distract from the gameplay.

I can't adequately describe how great this game is. You can literally almost do anything you want: read, explore, be hero, be a menace, be a loner, join guilds, get drunk, steal, plunder, murder, talk, make potions, repair armor and weapons, collect flowers and seeds, eat, sleep, sit, wait, ride horses, barter, pursuade people, and the list goes on.

I recommend this to anyone who can hold a controller and who is mature enough for a game like this. There is gambling, murder, stealing, demons, monsters, etc, available. How much is done is left to the player, but this game is not for children.

A Great Game

I bought this game when I purchased my X Box 360 Wireless (taking advantage of my wife's momentary weakness). This is the best video game I have ever played (and I started with playing Pong at the local Pizza Hut).

The game is never boring and it allows for endless wandering and exploring. My biggest complaint with role-playing games (especially fantasy ones) is that, eventually, you just end up repeating things over and over again: you know how to fight each character and the game becomes boring. In Oblivion, this does not happen. Your opponents rise in level with you, so you are presented with more and more difficult fights. Yes, you fight the same creatures, but the settings and actions change enough to make it continually interesting. The closest you get to repetition is fighting bandits, but they are a good source of gold.

There is a main quest, which you don't need to follow and many, many side quests. If you want to crawl in dungeons for a while, you can do it. If you want to explore, you can do that too.

The graphics are amazing. You will find yourself wandering through the landscape just for the joy of wandering around the landscape. Many times I have climbed a mountain just to see what I could see.

The game is easy to learn and fairly intuitive. The controls are easy and the "puzzles" challenging, but not ridiculous. You will find yourself having empathy for your character and thinking about and weighing the morality of your character's choices.

All in all, this is a fantastic game and will give you many, many hours of fun.

The best ever?????

Just wanted to put my two cents in about this game that has eaten up alot of my time. More time than I'd like to admit. I 've been a gamer all my life and have enjoyed many great games, but i can honestly say that I don't think there has been a game where everything came together to near perfection. The least anybody could say if they don't like the gameplay for whatever reason is that "it is the most beautiful game I have ever seen." It just so happens that gameplay, sound, and replay of the game are also top notch. When I say top notch I mean with some of the best ever. Framerate could have been a little better, but for a game that has everything I was able to put up with a few of the games glitches. For anyone that likes games like I do this is as close to a sure thing as there is. I would rate this game a 9.6, not a 10 only because of some of the bugs, get those fixed and you have, do I dare say maybe the best ever.

My Favorite Game For The Xbox 360

I purchased this game because I heard somebody say that it was similar to Grand Theft Auto. If I were to just see the game sitting on the shelf at a store and read the back of the box, I would likely have never played the game. It seemed like it would be one of those RPGs that is more like a card game than a video game, but Oblivion is a large, interactive and fun "first person" type of game with the expansive story line of an RPG.
The game is like Grand Theft Auto in that you can roam freely throughout practically an entire country. (I love games where you don't feel restricted to certain areas and tasks).
Lots of details and tons of "side missions" make Oblivion a great game for everyone. From the casual player that likes to pick up from their last save in the exact spot they left off a week ago, to the hardcore gamer that can't help staying up until 3:00am trying to get to the next tuning point in the story line.

Pros:
Huge playable areas
Almost everything is interactive
You choose your own course or "lifestyle"
Great graphics with only moderate loading times between areas

Cons:
On my console, it tends to get kind of slow and glitchy after playing for a few hours (it could just be my Xbox).
No online play

Overall, this is my favorite game for the 360 so far. I like how it combines the old world, medieval theme with a free playing style that isn't seen in many other games. A good game for all types of players.

I hope you have a lot of free time on your hands. In fact, its best to say goodbye to your friends and family right now, you aren't going to see them for a long time. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion will instantly suck you into its world and keep you there for months. Its do-what-you-want gameplay and massive world combine to create an almost flawless game that is incredibly fun to play and improves upon the previous installments.

The good news is that you don't need to know anything about the previous Elder Scrolls games. The game opens with the emperor's assassination by a demonic cult which allows these portals called "Oblivion Gates" to open all over Cyrodiil. Your job is to figure out a way to close them. The story manages to pull you in right from the start while still allowing you to freely explore the world and take up any other quests that might interest you.

Of course you could just as easily ignore the main quest all together and let the people fend for themselves. Feel like exploring the wild? Want to become a thief and steal everything in sight? How about going hunting or becoming an assassin? The game does not exaggerate when it asks "What do you want to do today?" There are hundreds of quests, and you will find that you always have something that you could be doing. Even though the game has a remarkable amount of things to do, the game manages to never feel overwhelming. Maybe it's due to the quest log, which keeps all of your quests organized nicely. Or maybe it's the fact that you never actually feel obligated to do any of it. You only have to do what you want to do. So while the main quest will take most people between 20-25 hours to complete, there is easily 100+ hours worth of content in the game if you choose to explore, which you will want to do.

The same is true for your character. There are countless ways in which to customize your character. You can pick from your standard list of races like Elves and Orcs and then pick from some typical (and not so typical) list of character classes. Or you can create your own character class if you choose to. Each character class has a list of core skills and abilities, but you are never prevented from learning others. You can truly create a character that fights the way you want to fight.

The world of Oblivion is just amazing. Not just in the sheer size of the world, but in the story as well. You really get a feeling that this world has its own culture and history to it. In fact, there are even books you can read in the game about the history of the world. There is a lot of depth to the world if you want to go looking for it. The main quest does a good job of making you go out and do some exploring, but you will only uncover a fraction of the world. There are tons of things to discover out in the wild including dungeons, shrines, forts and even hidden towns. I think it is safe to say that the majority of players will not even see half of what is there. Because the world is so huge, getting around it could have been a problem. Luckily the game features a "fast travel" system, which allows you to quickly travel to locations that you have already discovered. When you fast travel, it simulates the amount of time that it would have taken you to walk there, which is a nice touch.

The combat in the game feels good and intense. Of course the type of character you make can drastically change how the combat works for your character. I personally made a warrior, so I was involved mostly in close combat (with a bit of spell casting). The combat in the game was pretty simple to learn. You basically have quick attacks and power attacks. As you level up your weapon skills, you gain special attacks. You can use these attacks (like disarming an opponent) by pressing in a certain direction while attacking. You can also block incoming attacks with your weapon or shield if you decide to use one. Battles can have a sort of rhythm to them, with you blocking enemy attacks, following up with your own attack, and then blocking again. The ranged combat in the game also works pretty well. There is a wide range of bows and arrows that you can use as well as a bunch of ranged spells. It feels pretty smooth overall.

Experience in the game is done pretty well too, and a bit differently then some might expect. You gain experience in different skills simply by performing the action. So if you want to increase your blocking skill, you simply block attacks while in combat. You level up your stealth skills by sneaking around. It makes the leveling up system feel more natural and less contrived.

The visuals in the game are amazing to say the least. The outdoor environments are by far the best in any game. The forests are full of trees, rocks and plants that all animate with the weather. The HDR lighting is in full force, which helps to create some beautiful looking outdoor landscapes. The amount of detail in everything is also impressive. Weapons and armor (as well as all the items in the world) are beautifully modeled and textured. The only thing negative about the graphics is that the frame rate can slow down a bit at times. It is mostly noticeable while riding around the world on horseback when the game is loading the next area. But for the most part the Xbox 360 gives you pretty solid performance.

The audio in the game is exceptional. Every single character you will meet in the game has full speech. Given that there are hundreds of characters in the game, this is an amazing achievement. All of the voice acting is superb as well. While it would be nice if there were more voice actors in the game so you would not hear the same voice as much, there are a decent amount of voices. The music score in the game is also perfect.

The AI in the game is actually pretty special. Bethesda has created what they call "radiant AI". Basically what it does is it gives all of the characters in the game daily routines that are not scripted. For example, if a character decides they are hungry, they might go find some food. When they are tired they go to bed. In the morning they will wake up and go to work. And the system allows for some variations within that schedule. So some days a character might sleep in or something similar. Characters also have dynamic conversations with each other about stuff that is going on in the world. While the conversations can sometimes feel a bit stiff, they are pretty impressive and go a good job of making the world feel alive. Characters also behave differently based on how much they like you. This can effect things like what or how much information they give you on certain topics, to if they will help you if they see you in trouble.

Overall, this is one of the best RPG experiences you can find anywhere, and the strongest game the Xbox 360 has to offer so far. It is pretty clear that Oblivion has been a labor of love for the developers. They have poured all of their effort and creativity into this game and created the best single player RPG to come around in ages. This is a game that almost anyone can truly enjoy.

My fav rpg game definately worth buying

I will start by saying that this is the best rpg game that I have ever played or have seen being played. Oblivion really is like a whole different life from the one you already have, once you have created your charectar and gotten into the game a little bit you will feel like the charectar has become a part of you, a reflection of what you are like. Every charectar in oblivion is completely unique. You can spend hours just making your charectar just right. You will have to see it to believe it how detailed the designing of your charectar really is. Trust me you have never seen a charectar designing system like this before. In fact if you wanted you could even make your charectar look like yourself or anyone else. The only thing that I see lacking in the designing system is the hairstyles for each race there is about six different hairstyles to choose from. This does not bother me much though because you will probably end up waering a helmet or hood or something of that nature anyways.
The graphics are stunning, especialy if you have a high-definition tv. Its amazing just to sit there and look at the world around you. The atmosphere of the game is really realistic when it is supposed to be scary you feel it, when happy likewise.
The replay value is incredibly good for this game. ( providing you finish it with one charectar anyways) There are 10 classes to choose from ( Argonian Breton Dark Elf High Elf Imperial Khajiit Nord Orc Redguard and Wood Elf) each with their own different skills and abilities. Then you get to choos from about 12 different classes rangin from a feirce warrior, a stealthy rougue, a powerful mage, and all inbetween. Plus you can create custom classes to so you see the possibilities for this game are limitless.
The difficulty system in most games is horrible with just three levles easy medium and hard. When games have that you may feel like you are not being challenged enough with easy and medium, but cant even walk two steps without dying in hard. Well, oblivion's difficulty system is a slider which gives you the perfect difficulty. Also not only does it make the opponents harder or easier, it changes them. For example if you went from easy to hard what before may have been a wolf would now be a bear or the other way around.
There is so much more to tell about oblivion but i have run out of time. Ill let you discover that on your own. One last statement.

DEFINATELY WORTH BUYING

Everyone else can give you the techy stuff. Gameplay is what I'm about and this game delivers. I HATED Morrowind, but decided to buy it anyways. I'm glad I did... My wife, not so much.

Fun, not impossibly hard and you can juggle numerous quests at once. Your character can be as original as your imagination. I still haven't exactly figure out how to level up, but this game is so immersive that for the first time I'm not concerned with it. This game feels like Dungeons and Dragons meets Fable meets Knights of the Old Republic. It absolutely will suck up your life, so married people and parents BEWARE!!!

Buy this game. It will appeal to anyone on some level whether it be gameplay, graphics or story. If you hate RPGs this may change your mind.

A serious CLASSIC

If we are comparing Elder Scrolls 3 to Elder Scrolls 4, which it seems a lot of people are, then I am sorry but the older Morrowind game wins. I have played both, beat the first, and am somewhere in this middle of Oblivion, and still don't feel like I'm truly in another world. The game is wonderful. Don't get me wrong. It's vast and beautiful and everything is perfect except it loads every other step when I'm in the open range. How can everyone be giving it a 10 when Morrowind was almost just as big and was on a weaker console and never acted up this bad? I would have rather the company have waited 5 more months to fix the screen rates than to give into Microsoft and release it to drive sales higher before th PS3 is released. I will give a final example before I submit this and get ripped apart ... when I destroyed the Sigil stone and destroyed the first Gate my game loaded for 10 minutes, which I waited for, and then it went black, with music playing, and stayed black, for FIFTY minutes, before I turned it off after finishing my sandwhich. There's no excuse for that. This isn't Colleco Vision.

frigging unbelievable...
