Its Half-Life but in the future

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 17 / 22

... This is a great game in the tradition of Half-Life but still falls short of the greatness which Half-Life attained. I guess then I should start off with why I gave it 4 stars instead of five.

First the game is still based on the HL engine. While still being a good engine to use it is starting to show its age. HL came out about 2-3 years ago and FPS engines have had a drastic over haul in that time. The game still looks great and plays great though.

Secondly the levels are a little too short for me. I played it for a couple hours last night and I am already on the 3rd planet. The box says that there are 4 immense worlds to explore and well I haven't done much exploring to say the least and the worlds are not immense at that. Hopefully the 4th world will be a little bigger. Ya the story line is a little hokey but its better than many I have seen.

Well other than those two gripes the game shines. Each of the weapons has several functions with situations calling on your use of those various functions sometime throughout each level. The enemies are quite varied and fit in with the planet and its surroundings and their AI is pretty good.

I should say that I haven't played online yet with it so I am not going to comment on its multiplayer functions yet so this review may seem a little premature but I was here and what the hey...I wrote it.

Overall this is a fun game and if you like HL and Unreal then you will enjoy this game....

If 6 stars were available I'd choose 7.

This game rocks!! If you loved Half-Life you'll love this game. In my opinion it is at least as good as, if not better than Half-Life. Superb graphics/sound & storyline to keep you on the edge of your seat consistently.

The hottest first person shooter game I've ever played!!

Wow! This is a wholly original super fun game. The weapons are awesome and totally progammable. There's even a programmable tank you get to drive on one of the levels. The enemies run the gauntlet from human snipers to robotic monsters to dinosaurs and more. Though it it utilizes the Half-Life architecture, it is not a exactly the sequel to Half-Life but it's own game, with it's own awesome worlds at the far end of the galaxy. Graphics are great, fully realistic. Though it has a story line, it does not get in the way of the non-stop awesome action.

To start off, the game uses the Half-Life engine and the HL AI. Which is not a bad thing since HL put the gaming community on it's ear a few years back, with it's great game. So pretty much this is HL just with different story and setting, like I said that is the good thing. There are some points about the game that no one else has pointed out. The biggest to me is the game is just to short. HL took me 3 weeks to complete, Gunman 8 hours. This has happened to me twice now with add ons to HL, and that is pretty much what Gunman is, an add on. The other problem with the game is a texture problem. This does not affect the game, but do expect a patch in the near future. The last complaint is the fact that the story seems a little weak. You really never get to know who you are in the game, or who the Gunman really are. Once again this does not affect the game play, but does affect the way you feel about the character. What I did like about the game was the gun layout. You have a good array of weapons that can be configured to your liking. This is a good idea because of the fact of only being able to carry so many things. This way your laser gun can become a sniper riffle with the right model add on. Now you can use the right weapon for the right job and do it on the fly with just the click of the mouse. I also like the fact of being able to drive a tank from time to time in the game. This gives you a nice brake from running and shooting all the time. Okay so I gave it 3 stars, will mostly because it was so short. I do not like the thought of game companies throwing a few levels into a game and just not taking the time to make a fun experience, just to make money. If you have not played Half Life, GO now and buy it and see for yourself what Gunman should have been. Also if you want a great game try Deus Ex, loads and loads of fun and game play there.

Where is the rest of it?

I became a big fan of Valve's work when I played Half-Life, which had an involved story-line that seamlessly blended the action with the plot. Although Gunman Chronicles has a pretty weak story line, it still managed to keep me interested. The graphics are what you would expect from Half-Life, with a few new features, like cutomizable weapons and a tank you can drive. The down side is, the game is VERY short. I beat the game in less than fifteen hours of game time. I'm quite disappointed. This would get a stronger rating if it weren't for the length.

Gunman Chronicles is a first person shooter created on the Half Life build engine. Almost everything from the graphics, sound effects and the interface is the same as Half Life, When minimised to the tray the tray bar says Half Life. The storyline in gunmen is heavily inspired by Half Life and System Shock II, You play Major Archer of the gunman force, Gunmans are a kind of soldiers who battle against aliens, Years ago some gunmen fought a battle against an alien invation and their general was killed in that battle. That is before the game starts and now five years later the aliens are back and now you must take your troops and destroy the alien life forms, And surprise. You have to explore four different planets before meeting the final baddie, The A.I in gunmen is very good and like system shock II a computer AI will help you along. On your way you have to fight gaurds dressed like cowboys, Dinos, Aliens, Crocodiles, Shoot a copter with a rocket launcher, Drive a tank ect, You would meet scientist also but they will not help you sometimes they might attack you. Gunmen has some nice twist and turns to keep you intrested in the single player experiance, Just like half life the game starts with you taking a train ride but you need to take a training course before advancing to the main game. A training level in games is really great but that being a must and making it a part of the story and as if the training is for the main charecter is very silly, because the instructor says "Press your use key", things like that. The bad things in GC is that it is quite short and liner, The graphics are also bad and dated. Gunman has a lot of weapons and almost all of them have four types of firing but most of them are not intresting, The voice acting is not as good as half life. The ending is quite disappointing, I didnt expect the final showdown to be this easy and after what happenes in the final battle i felt that major archer is not the hero of the game something else is and all this time i was playing the hero's sidekick. The big boss is very disappointing i expected some other monstor to be the final baddie. And that it is so similar to Half Life that you could call it Half Life : Gunman Chronicles. Even though gunman has nothing new and quite dissapointing, It is great to see amatures create a game like this.

Download the demo version first.

While extremely impressive as a user-made modification using the Half-Life engine, Gunman Chronicles falls short as a retail game. As I've made countless attempts in the past to make my own modifications and conversions for games like Half-Life and Quake 2, I appreciate (perhaps sympathize with) the huge amount of work (maps, textures, models, skins, sounds, programming) that goes into a game like this. For this reason, as I played through the demo, I found myself quick to forgive the authors for things in the game I found to be confusing, annoying, or simply of poor quality. Then I remembered that someone actually wanted money for it, and I felt somewhat insulted.

For a commercial product sharing store shelves with great games like Half-life and System Shock 2, Gunman doesn't really come up to par. The game is not nearly as visually pleasing as Half-Life. In fact, sometimes it's borderline ugly. I decided this was partially due to weird architecture (the space station you start in looks like something from a bad sci-fi movie), but mostly because of the grainy-looking wall textures. The configurable weapons were a nice idea, but instead of simply having a few different fire modes the player could cycle through with a single key, the guns use a menu system that's difficlt to navigate and becomes frustrating, especially when you're getting shot because of it. As far as the actual gameplay, I felt bored many times when nothing was happenning and frustrated other times when too much was going on at once. Also, it often seemed unclear where to go and what to do in many areas of the game. I found myself wandering around in circles for ten minutes at a time before I'd realize there was some lever I was supposed to pull or a button I was supposed to press. Oh yeah, and the voice acting is terrible to the point of having a nails-on-chalkboard effect.

I'm not saying this is a horrible game and that you shouldn't at least try it, because you should (especially if you really liked Half-Life single player). The configurable weapons are fun to mess around with and it is, after all, the Half-Life engine. It's definitely worth downloading the demo, but if I had extra cash to spare, I'd spend it on a different game.

This game rocks!

I read an online interview with the team in which they said there are three play levels (easy, medium, difficult). The easy version is basically for novice gamers and the game does go by in about 8 - 15 hours. Try the difficult setting and the game is superior to Half-Life and just as long. The thing is -- the innovations such as totally unique weapons that obey they laws of physics but that do things never done before in a game and the foes ( robots, odd but very cool creatures, human snipers, dinosaurs) have incredible artificial intelligence at the "difficult" level and are damn hard to kill. This game is great--it's too bad so many evidently are missing out by playing on the "easy" setting. The plot line about a general who was left behind to die in a silicon based life form and survived to get even for being abandoned fuels the plot and the plot is really cool.

U can still play it online multiplayer

The clans are still playing it, but because the old WON servers are now defunct, you will need a Steam account to play multiplayer online. If you have a Halflife game, then you probably already have the Steam account. I am telling you this because this game is no longer supported by the company and its servers are gone forever. Once you install Gunman normally, to play multiplayer online all you have to do is this:

Open up your Programs folder where Gunman is installed (probably C:/Sierra/Gunman), and look for the folder called "Rewolf." Then just copy that folder to your Steam programs folder where all your other Steam games are listed. For example, my address to the Steam folder looks like this:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\jokerfunny

"jokerfunny" is my account name in Steam. Also, something no one told me, is that for me I had to open Steam and click on Games in the Menu and then select Activate Product on Steam. Then I had to enter my Gunman cd code. Once I did that and restarted Steam, Gunman showed up immediately. It did not show up just because I copied the Rewolf folder to the address above, but others swear it will so it might for you.
You need to make sure you have your regular Halflife game installed and showing in Steam before you do any of the above.

It sounds like alot, but it took me less than 4 minutes, and now I can play this great game with one of the original first person shooter communities ever! Yes, Gunman was out there right with Duke Nukem, but Gunman was way ahead of its time. Deathmatch maps are still everywhere on the internet and the clans are still designing new ones. Believe it or not!!

It's the same as Half-Life but with a good ending

Since i'm a PC gamer i'd say this game is just the same as Half-Life , even my friend thought it was a level i designed for Half-Life , i was disappointed at first of the game but then i start to like it especially when you drive the tank in last few levels , considering Half-Life was (and still) a great game with a great story line you can't compare it to Gunman Chronicles cuz Half-Life is waaaay better than Gunman Chronicles , take my advice if you want the game try to download the demo before buying it cuz you may not like the game , by the way the only good thing in the game is that you'll get a quite good ending i mean in Half-Life you won't know what well happen to Gorden Freeman , but in Gunman Chronicles you'll see a good ending for a good game.
