Everquest--Worst Game I've Played

Here's the lowdown on Everquest: 1) You can really write a dissertation like Phillip Cooper says about the flaws of EQ--that eventually turn the game into a drag. But I think the big flaw of EQ is that it's like the old D&D games--BUT run by a 13-year old sadistic Dungeon Master who delights in player killing, broken quests, and an environment where the player is way-underpowered compared to monsters (by EQ design to force grouping)! I'm an avid game player: Go, chess, Panzer General, Diablo, Vampire: Redemption--you name it--and I grew to *hate* EQ because of the way the game is setup. I feel that EQ is not fair 100 fold over any other game I've played. You can spend hours doing a quest (versus camping) and receive a sliver of experience (and a crummy rusty weapon). Or you can find out the quest is broken. Recently a player asked the EQ customer support lackey if they would publish which quests were broken. A reasonable enough request, no? The lackey replied that this was not possible as telling which quests were broken would be giving away tooooo much information. This is sadly typical of the attitude EQ has. If you would like to play a game run by sadistic designers who put out a bug-ridden product--then by all means buy EQ. You'll waste a lot of time before you're writing your own EQ horror stories here (the EQ bulletin boards are full of 'em). All of these stories are not by whiners--or by power gamers. Everyone has complaints about EQ--at least those who play enough. The good thing about EQ is whenever you're sick of getting stiffed and switch games you'll find you appreciate other games more.

I have been playing EQ for about a year and enjoyed it without any problems but the last patch or set of patches they made me download jackup the game. It was a directx patch for the new upgrade. Lots of other people have complained about sound and graphic since the last patch. Verant has refused to do anything about it and blames the dumb customers for the problems. I havent played in about a week and miss the game alot. I would buy S.O.V. if i was still able to play it. Make sure you have the few video cards verant wants you to have before investing in the game.

Ok, first of this game is an awsome game. Now you are thinking about why I only gave it one star. The reasons behind this are some of the biggest draw backs and I think most others will agree with me on some of my view points. First off, be prepared to pour alot of time into this game. To get to the highest level ( level 60...so far) can take up to 2 years of gameplay. Total playing time to get up to there is alot. I have see 113 days of a life spent to get to 60. To me that seems a bit extreme. Also another downside of this game is that all the best things in the game happen at the highest levels. Now to some people they can just jump on and make a character and just stick with that one character all the way to 60. This to me is extremly boring and quite a long process as well. The thing also about this game unlike others is that your melee skills are based almost purely on level. EX: A level one would never ever be able to kill a level 15. Another thing is that you can not control your own hits. You have no power or say if they hit or not except at the level 50+. At those levels you get disiplies that allow you to always hit a creature but then they only work for a short period of time. Another reason this game only got one stare is that no matter what people say the game is always going to be unbalanced. It has to be to keep your interest. The downside to this is that some classes in the game at, at the higher levels, are not wanted or needed. On behave of the game I will say the game is fun. Although at the lowest levels it to me seemed boring. If you have a family member that loves games, and you wish never to see them again buy this game. ( must have the second version to play) It is one of the best games I have ever played. It is overall a good game. You meet new people on-line from all over the globe. I hope this review will help some people with their decsion.
Add "dated" to its flaws!

Everquest has many problems (see the reviews of Ruins of Kunark) especially among players who have played it for some time. Some of the ones stated in the 80 reviews or so (currently) are: overcamping, internet lag (which will literally kill you), broken quests, corpse running, large amount of down time meditating and healing, and forcing players to group up at higher levels. Although players often suggest improvements, Verant's customer support is notoriously bad and anti-player. The only way to remedy some of EQ's faults would be to design a new game--one with the same depth and possibilities but without the disadvantages of EQ. If the game administrators weren't so anti-player EQ could be a fun game to play. Scars in order to be consistent must be more of the same and whereas EQ when it first came out over two years ago was a breath of fresh air compared to Ultima Online--the novelty of EQ has worn off. Though they may remain playing, most EQ players will have terrible stories to tell . Although we may expect to see expanded and better graphics with Scars--that's not really where the problem lies with EQ. And it's not even remotely possible that EQ will be better with Scars because the game administrators consider player complaints as so much whining. I played EQ for a while, but I noticed I wasn't having a good time--simply doing the same thing over and over and over again (while dying from Internet lags, random high level monsters killing me while I meditated, and resisted spells). I resent it, because EQ could be a good game.

Okay, here's the gist of things. EQ finally got to a point where it was almost bug free.......then out comes ROK. They still run patch after patch trying to fix little problems, and graphics glitches....and then they come out with yet ANOTHER expansion? Don't we get the picture yet? It's not about quality of gameplay, people.........it's about the bottom line. I could go into a 5 page dissertation on why I despise Verant and their company, and why the majority of people who are looking for a good gameplaying experience will walk away shaking their heads sadly....at the potential wasted, but I digress. Fix the car before doing a brand new paint job. Otherwise, you have something that LOOKS real great.......but goes nowhere.

This review applies to Everquest in general as well.
1) The game is geared towards high level characters (above 45). It can take up to 6 months just to reach level 30 (playing an average of 4 hours per day). It requires a significant time commitment to advance in the game past level 10.
2) The majority of quests provide insignificant experince points, items that lost their usefulness well past when a player is able to obtain them, and/or require a large amount of time of sitting and waiting doing nothing. A supplementary game (Tetris like in nature) was included to attempt to minimize the waiting pains.
3) The game is strongly oriented towards group interaction, although soloing is possible up to around level 34 or 35. Character classes become crucial around this level and if you are playing only one character and it doesn't fit in with a group that is fighting a monster or pursuing a quest then you don't get in. Same goes for the over abundance of guilds.
4) The game is constantly being modified to remove loop holes in poorly written code. Players caught utilizing these loopholes are punished or banned from the game.
5) There are some significant social and psycholgical issues that are compounded from this game. Addiction (obsessive compulsive behavior)and all that relates to it is the biggest. The game uses the proverbial carrot to string a player along. at certain levels new spells are obtained or a new skill is learned. But, these must be advanced as well. Players will stay home from work, school, and other responsibilities just to try to game that next level or that piece of gear that they must sit 8-10 hours to kill a monster that may or may not give the item. Loss of job, divorce, poor hygiene, financial problems, etc. have ocurred from playing the game. While it not the games direct fault, it is a result that can be caused from playing the game.
6) Customer service is extremely poor. In Sony's and Verant's eyes the customer is almost always WRONG. I personally consider the game analogous to tobacco industry and smoking.
I would not buy this game

First of all, this is only an expansion and it is an online-only game. Secondly, the company behind this game has a very poor history of customer support. If you take the time to do some research on the some Everquest's messageboard's...you'll discover the game has a lot of bugs. Verant Interactive, the company behind the game, frequently bans players from the game for little to no reasons, and cares little for their customers. I strongly recommend Asheron's Call, Ultima Online, or one of the upcoming role-playing games to this.

Unlike most game companies, VI lets nothing at all be known about games that they are about to ship. They basically take the stance, "trust us, it is fun, we are gaming gods" Nothing is known about the game, and no review is possible. Asking someone to preorder this game based upon NO information is an exercise in the gullibility of your customer base.
Everquest just keeps getting worse

Everquest was a fun game that gets progressivly more boring each level you gain. AT first I thought this game was excellent but as my character grew so did the problems, spending hours just trying to find monsters to fight, lag deaths, terrible customer service, and the list goes on. This expansion pack is no diffrent from the rest of the game. Aviod this like the plague and spend your money on the better upcoming online roleplaying games.
