EQ is a great game. It is diverse, and lush. EQ: SoV is an area that I can't even get to yet. I am only level 9. There are good and bad points to this game and its expansion.
I rate EQ higher than I would the expansion. Most people are criticizing the fact that it's devoted to higher level characters. They also mention the fact that the game itself takes hours of play to reach the higher levels. This is true, but you can spread these large number of hours to the span of several months or even a year. This game offers a LARGE variety of things to do. This game adds to those who do devote a large amount of time to the game. This game may get boring if all you do is kill. However, there is much to explore in this world and an almost endless array of rewarding things to do.
Pros: 1) Long time players get added variety and more zones. 2) Benefits as new items get added and traded about-- even players that do not have SoV get this benefit. 3) Customizing Windows has been made more readily available. 4) Some previously useless skills are now implemented. 5) Rumors abound about new quests and the ability to gain factions with Dragons or Giants.
Cons: 1) Lower level players will not enjoy full benefits. 2) You will grow envious of those auctioning of Vellium items. =) 3) Those tired "power" players, or those with time to play-- will dislike this expansion.
Overview: EQ core is fun but Scars will not be for everyone. This offers some nice features but best for those with level 30+ or 35+ characters. Graphics continue to improve. Three stars because it adds variety to the game in the form of new graphics and user interface devices. Bad because it accentuates power guilds, power players with a lot of time on their hands.
Personal note: Con #3 will exist in almost all games. Those with time to practice it will be better at it and higher in level. True of Ping Pong, Basketball, and Everquest. If they work hard at something, they get that reward for the time and effort at learning the game.
Hint: Find people that make you laugh, that you group and work well with. This is the true path the enjoying the game called EQ. This is regardless of what expansions you buy, or what you do in RL.
Hope this review helps. shooman out

Everquest began in 1999 with a world named Norrath, there were 3 continents, Odus, Antonica, and Faydwer, which were filled with creatures such as humans, trolls, and elves. In Early 2000 the Ruins of Kunark was released, this added a new race, the Iksar, a lizard type creature and the continent of Kunark was discovered south of Faydwer. And then in December 2000, the Scars of Velious was released, which completed Norrath with Velious, the icy island in which the life energy of Norrath was deposited by the crystalline dragon Veeshan.
This expansion adds much to the game, although there is no new playable race, there are new quests and hunting grounds for levels 30+, players choose from many different races and many different classes such as warriors, wizards, rogues, etc., but if you are just beginning on Everquest, I recommend you get a character into the high 20s before grabbing this, you can get the weapons and armor from Velious without it. The game only has a few setbacks, such as the $10 per month fee (It's worth the cash though), and the recently developed problem of server overcrowding, some of which are now populated with close to 3000 people. But if you're looking for adventure and a great online game, pick up Everquest.

First off i must say that this game is THE best game ive ever played...no matter if the game is action..Unreal Tournament....or real time strategy...Age of Empires II ..no other game i have ever played comes anywhere near. This is what i have to say:
For all of you that have ever played Asherons Call or are still playing it....do yourself a favor and throw that game in the Trash and buy this one...it is a BIG improvement. I know becuase i played asherons call and that game is pale in comparison to what this game has to offer. At first when i started to play EQ i was astounded by the actual look and gameplay of it...beautiful cascading colors and enemies that actually look like what they are. I also heard rumors that you had to group to gain levels...you dont..it is an option and when i first started playing i wanted to solo everything and not worry about joining a group. But as ive played further and further in the game now i have way much more fun talking and interacting with others as i fight the monsters. This brings me to my next point...you will never get sick of this game...and the possibilities are endless on what type of character you can play and how to improve your weaponry and armament ...even if you get to 60th level which is the highest ..the game doesnt end there is still much more stuff for you to do. The amount of time you can spend playing this game is endless ..truly.. endless. There is only one downfall of this game and that is one thing...it is unbelievably addictive you will play this game so much you wont want to do anything else. So in closing i must say to all of you out there that say "camping" and "lag" are problems with this game....you must be pretty ignorant. Lag is something that is not a problem in the least ...play asherons call then you will fear lag. And in any online rpg you will always fing campers which means one thing...GO SOMEWHERE ELSE there are tuns of places to go to for experience so if you have a problem with camping you obviously know nothing about how the game is played and whatever obstacle you cant overcome in this game is your own fault..use your brain and common sense and you will overcome anything...When truly there is nothing to overcome in the first place if you have an IQ above 60. Hopefully you will listen to my advice and buy this game...its really fun and you wont buy another game for a long time.... youll be playing this one for years.
The best expansion for EQ

Verant finally has shown there is more than just Kunark. The Ruins of Kunark was good... Scars of Velious is BEST. This expansion is very well done. The art is exceptional, with the snow areas being shown in a most realistic fashion. This expansion also brings out the concept of grouping with others. For some this is a detriment, for others it is a welcome venture. For those who are solo players, this is not for you. Most creatures are designed too tough an obstacle for one person to take down. For those who like to group, this is a dream land. XP is given very well for even grouped folks, but made so a solo character will not see much XP gain for the creatures they will be able to defeat. I myself am a grouping person so I found this an exceptional buy. I thought kunark was good, then I bought Velious.

Man i think wingbat7 hit it right on the nose. I am so sick of reading these off the wall reviews that have no foundation because they only look at the box or turn on the screen. Man you people haven't lived until you have actually gotten into the game it has a life of it's own. Friends come and go, heck you can even fall in love. Granted it is a game but haven't any of you just for once wanted to be what you have always DREAMED. An Enachanter to dazzle the most wealthy with you exquizate jewelry, a warrior with you honed abs, a necromancer with your dark arts. Come on now every one out there has a dream let Everquest make your dreams come true.
Just to clear up some matters

Ok, first of this game is an awsome game. Now you are thinking about why I only gave it one star. The reasons behind this are some of the biggest draw backs and I think most others will agree with me on some of my view points. First off, be prepared to pour alot of time into this game. To get to the highest level ( level 60...so far) can take up to 2 years of gameplay. Total playing time to get up to there is alot. I have see 113 days of a life spent to get to 60. To me that seems a bit extreme. Also another downside of this game is that all the best things in the game happen at the highest levels. Now to some people they can just jump on and make a character and just stick with that one character all the way to 60. This to me is extremly boring and quite a long process as well. The thing also about this game unlike others is that your melee skills are based almost purely on level. EX: A level one would never ever be able to kill a level 15. Another thing is that you can not control your own hits. You have no power or say if they hit or not except at the level 50+. At those levels you get disiplies that allow you to always hit a creature but then they only work for a short period of time. Another reason this game only got one stare is that no matter what people say the game is always going to be unbalanced. It has to be to keep your interest. The downside to this is that some classes in the game at, at the higher levels, are not wanted or needed. On behave of the game I will say the game is fun. Although at the lowest levels it to me seemed boring. If you have a family member that loves games, and you wish never to see them again buy this game. ( must have the second version to play) It is one of the best games I have ever played. It is overall a good game. You meet new people on-line from all over the globe. I hope this review will help some people with their decsion.
More addicting than the original Tetris and Zelda combined

Ive played quiet a few computer games in my life. Some have been good, some have been bad. Some have been very bad. This one is VERY good.
I first heard about Everquest from a friend of mine. He told me about how you could learn diffrent trade skills, and be diffrent classes of characters. I thought that was really cool. I was sick of the same Warrior/Wizard/Rogue scenarios from so many diffrent games. The thought of becoming rich by my own hand helped too.
So after much time getting my computer up to snuff, i loged in. I was blown away. The graphics are stupendous. The water looks like water. The sunsets are just as beautiful as the ones in real life. Even the moon casts moonlight out onto the land to see by.
Well, if the graphics dont sell you, the game play will. Lets face it, you HAVE to play on the internet, its $10 a month which is well worth it. Id pay $50 a month, its that good. Not to mention the wonderful tech support they have. It may take a while to get through, but once you do, your done in seconds. Ive never seen such a good tech support system. Everyone else is a person in it too(with a few NPCs), so you can make a ton of friends, allies and enemies. The best thing is, that you can be a loner or be a groupie. Everquest saw far in advance and designed classes to take advantage of this.
Want to be a groupie? Enchanters are the best, they help out a group so much, its amazing. Want to be a loner? Well heck, just about every class can be a loner to some extent. You can use magic, weapons, even martial arts.
What i truely think is the best thing is the trade skills. Through out the game you can learn new skills and create things out of other things. You can tailor, be a jeweler or even a blacksmith. Im going for all three myself.
Lets face it, Everquest is called Evercrack for a reason, you get one fix and you are hooked. If for some BIZZARE reason you arent hooked, you only lost the money for the game, because the first month of play is free. So give it a try.
I like this far more than Ruins of Kunark

Everquest: Scars of Velious is not an expansion for those new to Everquest. None of the zones on this continent are for players below level 30. Most of them require a player be a minimum of level 45 to survive. In this expansion to the ever popular rpg Everquest, a 'missing' continent has been discovered. On this continent there is a constantly waged war going on. The Coldain (Ice Dwarves) are at war with the Kromrif (Frost Giants) and to a lesser degree the Kromzek (Storm Giants), while the Kromzek are also at war with the Claws of Veeshan (Dragons). Also included on this expansion, are two more planes of life. The Plane of Mischief is home to Bristlebane (who is the god of rogues), and the Plane of Growth is the home to Lady Tunare (the goddess of wood elves and nature). In my opinion, one of the best features about Everquest: SOV is that unlike the original and the first expansion RoK, allows you to have shifting allegances. You can ally yourself with the Coldain, Giants, or Dragons basically at will, just by killing and questing for certain factions. Something else that was important to me, was that with the exception of one zone, I did not experience the video lag issues that I had with the mostly jungle look of the Ruins of Kunark expansion. The visuals in some of the zones in Velious are magnificent, and the more subtle and difficult stories/quests make it more enjoyable than the preceeding expansion. Anyone who has Everquest, and hasn't played SoV definitely needs to get ahold of it, and be ready for some changes to your world as you know it.
Love it or hate it, it's still EQ

I happen to like EQ. I've played since August, 1999 and averaged probably 10-15 hours of play a week. I enjoy the social interaction and grouping, as well as soloing.
If you like EQ, you'll love SoV. Once you get past 30th level in EQ, the areas that you can play start getting fewer and fewer, with more and more people contending for them. Kunark added quite a bit of content to the upper level game and that made things better.
SoV adds an enormous amount of content for the 30-60 level player. I happen to like it better than Kunark, but that's just preference. In addition, the quests have become more immersive and require more reliance on trade skills and such to complete. I happen to think that's a good thing, others may disagree.
I've noticed people complaining about the amount of time required to get a character to 30th level. It requires a commitment, to be sure. My 31st level necromancer has 6 days of playing time logged (6x24=144 hours) and that's reasonably fast. However, this is not out of line with other RPG games that I've played -- Baldur's Gate required about 200 hours from me to complete, for example.
It took me 3 months of casual playing to raise that necromancer to 31st level, so I don't think SoV is out of reach at all.
To be succinct: if you like EQ, you'll like SoV. If you hate EQ, then you'll probably hate SoV as well. 30th+ level is not unreachable at all for the casual gamer, and if you're level 30 or more, then SoV is worth buying.
The best, for a reason

There is a reason the EQ still has over 300,000 registered users, it is far and away the best online game ever made. Despite problems and many critics it is still the best value I have ever gotten out of a game.
