I'd say it's actually 3 and 1/2 stars but they don't have that option so whatever. When I first played Everquest I was an extreme newbie. I had never played a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). It took me awhile to get used to it. Like a month or 2 maybe. Everquest is not very newbie friendly but once you get the hang of things it can be your best friend or your worst enemy. It can result in you dancing around the room and cheering in happiness having gotten your epic weapon after months of doing those massive quests. Or it can have you slamming your head against the keyboard as you get ready for another CR (corpse run as it's called in game) after dying once more and losing experience. However, I made GREAT friends playing Everquest, you can join unions of players called guilds and I still talk with some I met today (I recently stopped playing). EQ is extremely addicting, in other words if you're a husband than prepare to invest in large amounts of flowers and other gifts for your wife for neglecting her for several months.

The game is great fun though, but you need to watch your standing with the many different factions in the game. Killing a certain thing may give you good standing with some factions, but bad with others. There is a complex in game economy, including a zone called the Bazaar where more than 300 players can be found at any different time selling thousands of different items. I liked to go to that zone and stare at all the cool armor and weapons and stuff lol. The customer support people are all very nice. There's even a volunteer customer support program called the Guide Program for those over 18. I spent a couple of months in it before quitting EverQuest (had been playing for about two and a half years). The game can get boring however. Endless hours of camping (killing monsters and waiting for them to respawn to kill them again) can be tedious, especially if you keep dying. However, expansion packs keep the flow going with new zones, quests, items, and playable races and classes. The variety of classes and races in EverQuest includes classes such as Warrior, Wizard, Shadowknight, and Druid. As well as races such as Barbarian, Wood Elf, Troll, Human, and Dwarf. Sometimes you'll hear arguments being shouted in a zone and they sometimes can get nasty, that's what the Guides are there for, to handle those issues and issue warnings to offending players. But parents should keep in mind that this is an online game with real people and kids sometimes may hear things they're not supposed to hear.

But, all in all this is a good game and I recommend it for it's fun value and the aspect of making good friends like I did.

Don't Waste your money!

I'm thankful I was given this game as a gift, because I would be seriously upset if I had paid money for this. First off, Sony was too cheap to actually give you all the discs you need to install this software and you have to spend hours downloading the rest of the program from their website. Second, you have to pay $12.95 per month to have the honor to play this game, NOT a small fee. And when you finally get to the point when you can play the game, it lacks direction and has akward controls. But don't worry, you'll be disconnected every fifteen minutes so you won't have to waste your time on this game.

What I don't understand is how Sony expects people to buy this game when you can purchase many other similar games (Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate) that you can play online for no additional cost (or play wihtout having to log on at all). Spend your money on something else.

Don't bother unless you have plenty of time.

I've played the game since it came out last year and it is fun to play but the design is for group play and group play only and this is the problem. If you have hours to burn on a regular basis then grouping shouldn't be a problem, but if you would like to get a hour or two in of playing time or if you don't like grouping then Everquest would be more fustraiting than fun. And grouping effectively requires people who know what they are doing; I have been killed so many times in groups it's not even funny. The game can be great fun but it can also give you an ulcer. If you have friends or family who will play when you play then go for it, if not I would wait on a more solo friendly game.

must improve customer service

I too am part of the Everquest world, as is my wife. We both have characters that are lvl 50. We are looking forward to the expansion just to try something new. The only complaint I have about the game is the very poor customer service. They refuse to answer to your concerns. They refuse to deal with your complaints in a expidient manner. The system is set up so that all issues are handled in game. There is no contact made outside of the game.. no email help.. no telephone help.. nothing.. you really are in their world now when you play this game and their world is a dictatorship. Why do we keep playing? Because of the wonderfull people that we have met who also play. The concept and game play scores a 4 out of 5.. the customer service scores a 0 out of 5

Having played the original Everquest Online Multiplayer game since its debut in March of 1999 I am excitedly looking forward to the expansion, Ruins of Kunark. That this game is different from any game you have played before would be an understatement. This game is larger than life. This is a fantasy world filled with literally thousands of folks just like you, who find the fantasy genre exciting. Everquest is a virtual world with only three continents so far explored. Kunark will make the forth. As amazing as the original game is, everything I have seen and read about the Kunark expansion leads me to believe it will be even better. If you have ever wanted to play at you'd you like to be, in a world where dragons still walk the land and Paladins still seek to slay them, then I highly recommend The Ruins of Kunark. There is something here for everyone. Take your pick of over a dozen races and professions. Take the role of an elf lord with the power of Magic at his finger tips who would rather use his skills to solve puzzles and mysteries than fight. As a barbarian princess with a firey spirit and a strong steel sword you can seek out the company of other heroes to help rid the land of foul, unearthly creatures. Each player may also choose to spend some of his or her time learning any of the dozens of skills available such as Tailoring, Blacksmithing, Hiding, Hand to Hand Combat or even Baking and Fishing. Plus, like in life, practicing your skills makes you gradually get better at them. Dwarves, halflings, ogres, unicorns, they're all waiting for you in the dynamic online game called Everquest -- Ruins of Kunark. Hope to see you there!

Fun for about a week

When I first played the game I found it very fun and interesting, but the more I played I realized I was doing the same exact things over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. It became mind-numbingly dull. I only managed to make it to lvl 5 before I couldn't take anymore.

The game has a great concept and the graphics look very nice. I enjoyed playing in a world full of other real people that I could actually interact with. The huge downside is that there is little variety to keep things fresh and interesting. I spent hours upon hours running around killing rats and snakes and whatnot. I would find a rat, hit the "attack" key and watch the battle unfold. Yeah, it was sort of cool the first few times, but after hours of doing this I felt my sanity starting to slip away.

Great if you like MMORPG

I really enjoyed this game when I first started playing it. It was easy to level. It was fun to see new stuff. The skills were cool, and the graphics were great.

However, it got to the point where it was taking weeks for me to reach the next level. I'm a casual gamer, and as such, I don't spend a large amount of time online. If you don't have that time to invest, there is no future in this game.

It also helped me come to the realization that I don't like massively multiplayer online games, for several reasons. 1. The people tend to whine and generally be rude. This is not a blanket statement as I have seen many players that are cool. 2. There is no end. There is no winning this game. I know a lot of people like this quality of the MMORPG, but I don't. I want a resolution that an MMORPG will never give me.

As for the customer service, the one review that was given saying there was no customer service is wrong. It is excellent. I only wish more companies had customer service where someone continuously read customers threads on the internet to take suggestions and to address concerns.

If you like MMORPGs, then you'll love EverQuest.

Well don't get too excited. It seems Verant is interested inselling the scraps ommited from the original design because of the popularity. But this time with Lizard people! Woo how unique. Anyway the game still has no story, no coherent history really, no roleplaying potential, just a nice item to buy so you can continue to raise stat scores to unparalleled heights. Have fun (I wish they would sell something from the good people at middle earth)

The key to liking EverQuest is actually PLAYING the game. Most people just go through and [destroy] creatures... the game isn't exactly fun then. You have to roleplay, set into the way the character would actually act. Once you do, the entire game changes! Trust me, its MUCH more fun that way.
