The problem with this game is the same one you get with most other games like it. To make it fair for the people who invest a lot of time, they have to make leveling something that takes forever. I played it when it first came out and enjoyed it for about a month. That's a pretty long time for a game i was paying money for after i bought it. If you are looking for this type of game, try Dark Ages of Camelot, it's a better version of Everquest...basically, it has wars with other countries as well...things are handled better. The point is, this game is, nowadays, a waste of money. It was good when it came out...if you have friends to play it with...but now there are much better games out there.

Everquest is a name which is in every online player's vocabulary. It is a game which revolutionized online gaming, and has made an impact on many people who haved played it. The imaginary world of Norrath is full of creatures that are waiting for you. Sounds great, but it really isn't as fun as many people make it out to be. First of all, you have to start by being a "newbie", which is basically having all of the higher levels laugh at you, and they will get their laughs out of you any way they can. Another bad thing about being a newbie is that you can only kill a few animals, which gets old real fast.
Now, don't get me wrong, this is a fun game. The characters are really diverse, and the people controlling them are extremely diverse. Some people really try to play this game. Some people just run around making it a horrible exprience for other gamers. I have had experience doing both, and they are both equally fun. Another good thing about this game are the settings. No two zones look alike, and the starting points for each race are extremelly different. The halflings will start out in a forest, while the Barbarians will start out in a snowy region.
Overall, this game is fun, but it really isn't worth your ten bucks a month, and it definetly isn't worth your life.
Buy it and enjoy the experience.

Flawed? Maybe. But this online adventure is the most addictive, ambitious, fun and pleasing game I've ever seen. Server side input means that the game is as dynamic as you would ever want. The game is like every day life: you'll find people you like, dislike, challenges, concerns, problems. You won't go wrong with this but be warned: you'll get addicted.
Fantastic game - the best!

Unbelieveably addictive! Everquest will set the standard for online role playing games. In addition to its many technical merits, it also does a lot to encourage social interaction adding yet another dimension to an outstanding game.
Dont Bother, wait for Never Winter Nights, or Shadowbane..

The original game EverQuest, was a great idea, but the people at Verant have taken that idea, and bent it out of shape for the only purpose of slowing down character advancemet so you will have to play longer, and pay them more money!
This is not an RPG, unless you read that as... Really Profitable Game!
Varant has some of the worst customer service I have ever seen in any company, and their basic assuption is, the player is always lying!
If you dont believe me, check out the EQ web sight message boards, And see what other players say. But do it in the next two weeks, because they are about to clamp down, and censor the boards of any un-favrorable posts.
They have banned peoples accounts perminatly over some of the most ludicrus things. and once your account is banned, you might as well throw away your CD, because its now useless! if you ever want to play again, you have to buy a new copy, and start all over with new characters.
If you enjoy frustration, and boredom, play a character past about lvl 25, you'll have a ball!
You may find it fun at low levels, but try to build a high level character, and you hit the "hell levels" that take forever to get through, and then the next level penaltys for death, are 2-3X normal, and throw you right back into the hell level! again, if you dont believe me, check the message boards. see for your self!
If you want the most powerful items in the game, expect to spend 12-18hr non-stop on-line to get them! (this is not an exageration!)
And even if you totally discount me as a disgruntalled player, just check out the web sights, befor you buy this turkey!
Save your money, much better things are on the horizon!
Shameful Customer Service Makes a Good Game Stink

I am actually kind of surprised that Sony and 989 Studios would jeopardize their good names by being associated with the unprofessional service staff at Verant software.
At first you might think that once you buy a game, what does it matter how the company runs its customer service? But believe me, it does. In a game where you can only play online you are at the complete mercy of your hosts. And if they are poorly staffed with an array of unhelpful and sometimes arrogant, unprofessional personnel, you are probably playing EverQuest.
EverQuest is and of itself a fantastic world of fantasy adventure, and probably one of the best games of its ilk to come around in a long time. The character designs, graphics, music (when you are in a place where the game plays music), and gameplay are all very good. The real problem with this game is the way that Verant handles its customer support. The term "customer" is ironic here because never have I seen a company treat the people paying its bills with such utter disregard.
Any time a player has a problem with the game (and plenty crop up), the only course of action that will have any effect is to "petition" an "in game" Verant representative known as a GM (which is not a highly publicized fact). E-mails to various "authorities" will go unanswered and fruitless long distance calls Verant's California offices will result in endless run-around to the point of which one can only conclude that the company is atrociously organized. When a GM finally has the time to answer (it could be hours), expect a hasty conversation, contradictory information, and in the end unsatisfactory results. All this will add up to great frustration while trying to play the game and a feeling that the company couldn't care less whether or not you continue to use their service. It is inevitable that when there is release by another company to rival this game, people will abandon EverQuest en masse.
The programmers of EverQuest have done a great job at creating an online 3-D fantasy world. It is perhaps a testament to their skills that people in great numbers continue to play this game even though the staff running it could possibly be worst front line to the consumer ever assembled.

I read another review on here saying how bad the customer support was. Incorrect. The Customer Support in this game is astounding. They have a Game Master / Guide staff in-game 24/7, helping you with disturbances from other players, and more. PLUS, you can talk directly with Brad McQuaid, producer. He responds to personal e-mails very quickly. And, the EQ Staff is always trying to improve the game. All other aspects are great. Gameplay, Quests, Interaction, Graphics, sound is iffy, but still good. EQ is a great game for anyone, RPG fan or not.
I don't know what everyone else is talking about!

I don't know what everyone else is talking about. I have never played a game that is so in depth and diverse. You can choose from a ton of different combinations of races and classes. I have 3 different characters in this game and I play the one that reflects the mood that I'm in. It's a great game and I recommend it to anyone that enjoys a great RPG or just videogames in general. I'll see you on EQ sometime I'm either Conlan(Wood Elf Ranger), Kenzie(Barbarian Shaman), or Donaugh(High Elf Enchanter). Buy this game it's amazing.

I found this game to be a vision of what is possible for the future of games, the internet and maybe humanity itself. The backbone of this experience is the establishment of community and common purpose. You have to live it to understand this. It goes without saying this game has my strongest recommendations.
An Excellent RP game and one of the best overall games.

When reading the reviews I saw two things... a) a bunch of whining and b) very few praises.
I will suppose here, that very few of the whiners ever played games called "muds". These are the same basis as EQ but it is all text based.
For us die hard MUD Fans (Multi User Dungeons), EQ is what we have always been waiting for. We don't care how long it takes to lvl because we enjoy every single minute of the game!
Sure there are bugs and much room for improvement, but this is by far one of the most outstanding games i have EVER played.
It doesn't take dedication unless you expect to level fast. You can log on and play whenever you want.
And btw... no respectable mud or online game would have easy to play spell casters. They are difficult and made for people that WANT the challenge. Are you one of those that likes to give your characters the maximum stats and abilities ? So the game isn't fun to anyone but you? Or are you upset because you haven't fount any cheats to make life easer? =)
I enjoy this game, and it is addicting and can be expensive. I think it is geared more towards older teenagers and young adults then the below 18 crowd. And roleplaying is what it is ALL about.
There are many bugs, but i haven't seen a game put out YET that wasn't full of them. This game is being worked and reworked and soon updated.
So quit whining and either play or quit! The game is only what you make of it. =)
