This game is very enticing to the virgin Online Gamer. When you first begin playing, it is a completely new experience. Interaction with NPC's (Non-Player Characters) and the idea of embarking on quests to earn reward will be like brain-candy to the average gamer, mainly because you can 'party' or 'group' with other players. And there can be well over 2000 people on at one time. And this is where the seemingly endless list of problems begin.
The game is over-populated with immature, screaming children. Being a 'newbie' on this game, considering that it is already over 2 years old, is a very defeating and painful experience. These very immature players will make your fun experience quickly deteriorate into a childish war of words, with phrases such as 'U are such a newbie', 'What a stupid newbie!' and other such remarks. Once you are able to move on to hunting new monsters, you will often find people screaming at you again. They will mark you as a 'camp stealer' or a 'KSer', which means 'Kill stealer', at which point, you may find these people harassing you and following you for weeks on end, trying to make your online experience a terrible one.
In the long run, this game is very unbalanced and unfair. The Game Masters, known as GM's, are often just as childish as the players, and will also harass you and become vengeful if you do something that irritates them. As a former player, I strongly ADVISE AGAINST the purchase of this game. If the immature behavior of more than half the other people you encounter on this game does not turn you off, then you will be hooked on the addictive, if very, very repetitive gameplay. Out of personal experience, I have a friend who has called in sick to work, cut school, and blown off opportunities to have REAL-LIFE fun with myself and our other friends. Getting bad grades in COLLEGE over a game is no excuse. This game is not worth that.
Other than gripes with the other players, the game itself gets boring rather quickly. Killing the same creatures over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again with VERY LITTLE reward, and at many times no reward at all, detract from this game. Again, I srongly ADVISE AGAINST the purchasing of this game. IF you can get past the immature players (Estimated range of more than 70% of the players are from 9-14), then you will most likely find the repetitive gameplay a turn off. However, if you do enjoy the game, try not to let it interfere with your personal life. This below-average game is not worth losing friends over.
On a personal note, I only played this game for about 7 months before realizing that it was not for me. I thought the game was rather boring after about 3 months, but it is still very addicting. The biggest draw would be creating a new character, but once you find that your rewards are coming very slowly, and other players are starting to bother you, hopefully you will do the same as I did, and be rid of this game and not look back. There are many more important thing in life, such as college and my girlfriend to care about. If you want interaction with new people, go to a party or a bar.

Yes, I have played both UO and AC in addition to this, and neither one of them could hold a candle to Everquest. UO, well, it's just bad. Asheron's Call is definatly a worthy contender, but it only has one advantage (no zones) and plenty on disadvantages (only one class, smaller world, and worse interface) when compared to Everquest. One thing though; don't buy this game if you don't have time on your hands. It takes a long time to get a respectable character, and money, well, you will feel like celebrating when you make your first platinum, or get anything better than what your guild gives you. But if you take the time, this will be one of the most immersive games you have ever played. P.S. My name is Demitrius in the game, and I am on the Ber. server (the actual name is WAY too long to spell here, but it is the only one that starts with B). See you there!

Sorry to burst the bubble of all the people who thought that this would be a great way to roleplay online, because to be honest. I've had the game for a number of months now and I've seen distrubingly low amounts of Role Playing in this game, if you are one of those people who insisted on finding every secret in the Final Fantasy series of games, and don't care if there is an interesting story surrounding your god-like character (which will take you thousands of gamplay hours to create, and you still will not be on par with the toughest monsters in the game). Then ignore my one out of five star rating and knock yourself out. Oh and as a side note be prepared to be exploited by Verant at every corner, because to them you are just $9.89 a month nothing more.
Words can't describe this game!

Think to your self of a game that will take your wakeing moments and make them a dream. This game is the greatest out there, once you are in the world of Norrath you won't want to leave. Think of a world where thousands of people live, yes, live. I bought this game when it first came out and haven't bought another game. You log on and choose a charecter, from 14 different races and a profession that you choose from 12. You can be a dwarvin cleric, a high elf magican, or a barbarian warrior. There is no limit to what you can be. And then you take your first steps in one of Norrath's many cities. Players shouting wares, moving about, and makeing a generial chaos to a new players senses. But don't worry, in ten minuets you know the basic controles and have killed your first bat. Simple, yeah right. After enjoying a little time of batteling monsters, you see that you have a small pile of silver and copper. So you go into the local shop, and are overtaken by the ammount of differen't things to buy. There are hundreds upon hundreds of things to buy in Norrath, in ONE city alone no less. After buying that first weapon or piece of armor you go back out and battle some more. And your hooked. Thats it, you have dround in the "Most imersive role-playing expirence ever." - PC Gamer You now spend hours and hours and hours in Norrath, adventureing with new friends, finding new and rare items, visiting exciting locations, and completeing your first few quests. The only problem with this game is that you may have a little problem with "lag". That can be annoying at times, as can getting kiled by that new monster that attacked you from behind. And be warned, the person who buys or gets this as a gift will not be seen for a LONG time. Well, enjoy this marvel of gameing tech and you wont be dissapointed, in this ever changeing world of fate.

Like many RPG addicts, I chose to ignore the warnings and go ahead and get EverQuest. After the initial ooo's and aaaah's wore down, I realized one horrible fact. The online gaming community that Verant has going on is horrible. The players treat each other with little or no regard, and Verant staff do nothing about it. And if you want to say the heck with them and solo, FORGET IT. There is such a horrible gap in the creature/zone level that even if you are lucky and can kill a yellow con on your own, a red con comes along, agro's on you, and you are dead. Save your hard earned money and seek elsewhere for an enjoyable experience. Wait for Icewind Dale or Diablo 2.

I have played here only a week and am hooked! This is a great multi-player RPG - And I do mean multi-player - the game is designed to have characters work together in fighting the nasty critters - but where is the harm in that? You make new friends! You can swap tall tales, fall in love, be betrayed - it all comes down to ROLEPLAY. This is a great experience for players who truly wish to get into their characters.
The game also has stunning graphics, sounds, several classes/races, and is huge. Three continents! I admit it is not really for the casual player but for those of us who always wanted to go to Middle-Earth, or Midkemia, or any numerous other 'fantasy' lands, - this is a perfect venue - the only minor problem I have run into is the monsters spawn rather slow sometimes and there are lots of other people competing to kill that same critter you just oriented on.
You can also choose to PK here and there are servers aimed solely for that venue.
The best thing about this game is it has a little something for everyone - and the game just keeps finetuning! Thank you Verant for continually trying to better EQ!

Well pretty much all has been said by the people above me. Minus a few things.
1. Being a new player doesn't have to be hard simply go to any of the online links that are at the everquest main page.
2. If someone hassles you it's really simple you put them in ignore and go on haveing your fun. It's a huge world and they can't follow you everywhere.
3. If you have children, husband, responsibilities then do what I do. Deal with them and when you have time play the game.
4. Lets see.. out of all the things you could be addicted too, at least this doesn't cost that much (money wise) or give you a hang over, it has yet to kill anyone in real life that we know of, and if this little game cause a divorce or two I can tell you there was problems to begin with.
5. It will improve your typeing speed if you expect to talk to other people. Will improve your spelling, (there are some real grammar sticklers in the game)
6. If your like me I've met in real life some great people thru the game.
I have been playing over a year and still love it.
If your buying this game for the first time, wow your in for a treat, they aren't kidding when they say you are in thier world now. It's amazeing..
Pretty Cool Game, really

Ok, so the other guys have a lot of negatives to say about EQ.....and it IS true, the customer service is pathetic. We had a customer service issue that we eventually just worked out on our own just to get going again, but the play is really worth getting past the growing pains of a new RPG on the horizon of greatness. We just all have to hang in there while things get worked out.
Meanwhile, I am (ahem!) a 42 year old mother of 4 who has a lot of fun playing this game with my teenage son. (Don't get involved if you don't like the constant bashing and whacking of different creatures, which is the nature of the game...to rid the Norath world of all the nasties likes orcs and such.) But I like a role of a healer and let the teenagers go for the more aggressive roles. The game centers around cooperation, teams of up to 6 characters working together to acomplish something. Without cooperation it isn't as fun or as easy to advance your character.
Many of the players on EQ are really considerate and helpful to others, and I have been impressed with the fun that they bring to the game. After all, this is what keeps it interesting, that it is ever changing, never predictable, as fluid as life itself. Enjoy!
EverLevel would be a more appropriate name...

EverQuest consists of wonderful graphics, an easy to use interface, and an addiction factor somewhat steeper than crack. At first I had a wonderful time playing, but then after time the only true goal of the game seemed to be to move your little "Experience Bar" up to get to the next Level, then repeat. It's major sufferings as a massively multiplayer online game (no roleplaying to it) are in part how incredibly impersonal it is compared to other online games, and the inability to adventure with friends whom have somewhat more advanced characters. There are just too many other online games out there, similar but superior than EQ. If you pick it up, be sure to watch it... games like these are VERY addictive.

Everquest is a good game but it has its problems. The graphicsand the variety of sights are amazing. Even though it has it problemsthis game actually does have a quest system. If you like soloing or donot want to have to group with others to play, then this game is not for you. You can usually only solo effectively up into the 20s but that also depends on the class you are playing. Verant says they "support soloing" but refuses to say which class is best for it and as I mention later, the manual is not correct. The player concensus at the time for best soloable class is necromancer, magician or druid but with constant in-game changes this could change and has before. Customer support is horrible. 99% of the time the reply is "Im sorry I cant help you" if you actually receive a reply. The manual and "hint book" including the constantly updated version on your hard-drive is very wrong and inconsistant yet Verant/989 refuse to address several important issues. You are allowed to allocate extra stat points when creating your character, but most of the stats do not work correctly and have little or no effect. Verant's own PR person has made the comment "if he had his way the stat section would just be removed from the manual", due to many complaints and inquiries about this issue. The game box says there are 5 continents but there are only 3, 4 if you count Kunark, but that is only available with the expansion. Verant also continues to "balance" the game. This is the norm in all "virtual world" games. However Verant rarely does anything to bring power of underpowered things up and instead choose to lower the power on higher powered things. They also tend to do "stealth" changes to important game features without bothering to tell players. There are some very important game issues that did/do not work correctly and have/had been reported as not working since beta and have been either completely ignored or decided to be working "as intended" Many of the quests do not work correctly and role-playing is not very big at all in game. Overcrowding is HORRIBLE, and Verant seems very unwilling to do anything about it. On release the max number of people per server was quoted as 1200, then that changed to 1500, the last quote was 1800. There are currently usually at peak time well over 2000 people on most servers which causes a lot of conflict/aggravation between the players. Enough so a "Play Nice" policy had to be put into effect to address several issues caused by in-game crowding. Actually 1500 seems to be too many people to play this game as it was intended. Even with all of the down sides I have listed if you can ignore most of them you will enjoy this game for a while anyway. The reason I only gave it 2 stars though is because I didnt find out many things that were important until after playing for hours and hours. Im refereing to ingame mechanics that Verant refuses to "clarify".
