Cossacks

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3

Cossacks is a more adult version of the popular Age of Empires series. It can handle thousands of units in more modern warfare scenarios. Because of the added numbers and multiple types of units, it is more difficult to defeat. As a history buff, I found this to be the best real time military sim I have played. Well worth the money and a significant improvement over the Microsoft genre. Highly recommended.

Best RTS that I have ever played!!!

The Best Stargegy game Ever

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 8

Cossacks is the best RPG/Startegy ever! Empire Earth was big let down it had the worst graphics ever and it was too easy to progress through levels (nano, prehistoric etc.)

Back to the point. This game lets you control 8000 units AOE 1 and 2 are total dog poop compared to this masterpiece. The only trouble is no American army! But still it is the best strategy game ever. It has the best graphics possible for a computer exept FIFA and Max Payne. It is crystal clear and the grass waves and the miners mine. It is just so.... The best feature has to be the attacks with the cannons and howitzers. The balls explode and kill everone in the small blast radius. The only problem is left alone they are easily captured and turned against you. France and Netheralands are the best countries with France being good at horses and Netherlands having good all round and nice architecture. England is great at ships. Th best units are Battleships which are 1st class cannon-ball throwing machines, the graphics on these are awesome.

Cossacks - Don't Pass This Up

The game reminds me a little of Warcraft. It is easy to learn, and exciting to play. You don't get bogged down in gathering food and minerals. Armies are easy to raise, and the number of troops any side can have is impressive. The computer AI can turn things around quickly if you under estimate it. The graphics and sound are good. Taking advantage of the terrain can assist you in defense. I highly recommend the game.

Could be fun...but too much resource management

I bought this game anticipating a very fun and enjoyable experience. How wrong did I turn out to be! This game has great graphics and a wonderful premise but the emphasis is on resource management and that detracts from the game. You have to have resources (food, gold, etc...) to create units but also to MAINTAIN them. So your resources are constantly being drained. The more units you have the faster the resources are drained. The game claims to let you have up to 8,000 units on screen (divided by the # of players) but I can't imagine how bad it would be if you had 500 or so units. The game has wonderful possibilities but this emphasis on resources takes away from what could be an enjoyable game. This game is only for those who have plenty of time (4 or so hours) to spend on a single game. It is too tedious for me to be considered fun. For this reason, I can't recommend this game.

One of the most comprehensive RTS games ever

Even though there has been a trend for some software developers to release games prior to completion, leaving those of us who buy the game in a froth, there has been no evidence in any of my colleagues systems that supports any "bug" problem.

As for the game: Cossacks brings for the first time a real world realism that is minute in scale but powerfully orchestrated. The combination of balanced units spanning 16 countries and a unique economic system portrays the grandiose nature of the game. The game is not easy. It takes time to adapt from the childishly simple Age of Empire series to a vastly more complex game such as Cossacks. People who are used to the AOE series may find it harder but true RTS players will rise to the challenge and understand that what they have before them is a truly remarkable game that demands respect. Players should expect a medium grade learning curve. Napoleon made it look easy but what amount of time do you think he took in planning his assault of Europe?

Cossacks boasts several dominating features such as varied units, strengths and weaknesses based on historical disadvantages, i.e. Algerians have no rifles, Ukranians have no pikemen, Turkey and Algeria are unable to move to the 18th century and therefore unable to reveal the entire map using the balloon. A desktop general will have learned the strengths and weaknesses of these countries and implemented strategies to overcome them. When playing the computer's AI it is sometimes best to send out raiders to attack early to keep one's own town from assault. There are boundless opportunities to use and it is only the limitations of the person's imagination that will ultimately lead them to defeat.

Now to be completely holistic about the entire experience my only feelings as to a drawback to Cossacks is the inability to play the AI in multiplayer. ...Regardless of this shortcoming I do not find this at all convincing of having to take the game back for this small oversight.

If someone has technical problems with the game I recommend troubleshooting and making good use of someone else's machine to identify if it not truly your machine that is creating problems or the game. I have yet to see any problems but there is always a first.

I recommend Cossacks as a must have for RTS gamers who seek the realism that had been missing prior

Best RTS ever

The game idea itself is not much different from AOE, but the graphics, sound, and especially the ability to arrange units into formations adds some missing touches. I personally love the Battle Scenarios, which allow you to re-enact a historic battle ...saves time and gives you the opportunity to focus on tactics. Especially fun to play on the internet against another human - which is always a greater challenge then AI.
Great game! If you liked Dune II, Dune 2000, or AOE don't miss it!

Cossacks Is Great

Cossacks uses very correct and appropriate uses of the revolutionary times. The buildings and units look great, the game is challenging yet exiting. I mean you could just come around a bend in a river be faced with a million battleships and all you have are ten yachts. Its great how they made it so that hte enemy can do two things attack you or build up a deffence against you. Some people might think that is is just a game were you make an army and attack a country, its not to make an army you need a barracks to make a barracks you need a blacksmith to make a blacksmith you need a town hall, and to move it back, to make an army you need food money iron stone wood all of which yuo have your peasents get. As you can see it is a great game.

Great Game

I played Starcraft, Warcraft, AOE among other titles and loved all of them. One thing that always bothered me was the lack of huge armies. In Cossacks, this is not a problem. I just got the game a week or so ago and have played it constantly. The most men I once had at one time was around 800 guys running around killing everyone in sight and the game ran perfectly. I strongly recommend this game. The graphics are gorgeous although the sound is just ok. Its a little harder i think then AOE but much more enjoyable. ...

Great...if you're into napoleanics.

Decent graphics for the huge number of units. Moderate variety among nations. Very playable. Enjoyable endgame;whereas many games become tedious once victory is a foregone conclusion, this one makes razing the enemies town epic and fun. The computer player is too easily outsmarted by any serious gamer (although this is a problem common to many games).
