Frustrating

I get frustrated playing this game. I have problems with the game locking up, or fatal errors occuring alot and ruining my game. It wouldn't be so bad if you weren't two or three hours into the game when it happens and usually only if you are winning. I have had this game for about three weeks and I have only beat one campaign level without the game locking up or fatal errors occurring. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to win to get to the next level in the campaign. If you press the pause button it locks up sometimes. The game moves pretty slow so you don't really have to use the pause button. And if you save a game it locks up sometimes too, and then you start from where you saved the game and it will lock up in the same spot. I have had better luck with the Random maps games though. I don't know it might just be my computer but I have unloaded and reloaded the game around five times and it still locks up sometimes. I would suggest spending your money on something else or waiting for them to fix some of the bugs before buying it. Unless you are stubborn like me and like banging your head against the wall when you have been playing a game for a couple of hours and then the game locks up just when you think you have discovered how to win. I like the concept of the game and you have literally hundreds of units and a large tech tree and the mines are cool, you can upgrade them and fit more units inside as you go along. And I like the idea that your resources of gold, iron, coal, stone, and wood are unlimited and you don't eventually run out and have to go find more resources(you just have to add more peasants if you are running low). They need to fix some of the bugs before it is a five star game. Maybe you will love to hate this game as much as I do?

Could be perfect

This game deals exactly with what I love: History. I like strategy games very much and I like those that take place on ancient ages rather than futuristic ones. Due to fact that I love history and strategy games, this game had everything make me an addict. It didn't.
There are several things that are missing. OK, there are a lot of different types of units and several nations, each of with very particular caractheristic. But I miss some stuff that are well done by other strategy games, like beeing able to give and queue up orders when the game is paused (I couldn't do this in Cossacks).
I haven't played the game with the new addon (Art of War), but I don't expect changes on such things like the ones mentioned. There's one thing I've learned about the new addon that might help begginers, that is, starting the game in peace time. That would avoid your building to be destroyed in the first 5
minutes of the game.
I imagine that putting together the great story behind Cossacks with the capabilities of other strategy games like Outlive or Starcraft would make the perfect one.

Seriously, if you don't like this game and you loved Ages of Empire or any RTS, then something is wrong with you. The guy who wrote about the battleships exagrerated somewhat on the distance - maybe if it is small island. I've played the sea battles many times, and you can beat the AI on hard - barely. I loved AOEII and spent many hours online. Cossacks is by far much better and will only get better as the developers tweak and make add-ons. So get the game and lets play. Vundril

AOE 3rd rate clone

I cannot believe the reviews I am reading about this game! How anybody can rate this piece of you-know-what above a 2 is beyond me, unless the game's marketers and designers are rating it.

The game design is obviously a direct copy of Age of Empires. Only not as much fun and with a far-far-far more kludgey user interface. Game design rating: 1 star

The sound is atrocious, rating: 1 star

Graphics: On a scale of 1-100, give AOE a rating of 90, Kossacks rating: 1 star

Fun rating: 1 star.

I read through the thick manual when I bought this game and was a little disapointed in the lack of professionalism inside the cover (the cover was great).

Then I eagerly installed the game. I lost some enthusiasm during the install since even the installation program was a little amateurish.

Then I ran it. It did not run. I tried again. It did not run. Strangely on the third try the thing slowly took off like a old lumbering sea-plane.

The opening graphics were ok. Then I played a game. All enthusiasm quickly zeroed out to nil.

20 minutes of painful playing of this game greatly raised my enthusiasm...

FOR UNINSTALLING IT!

The uninstall worked pretty good and now I have my 500megs of disk space back and am searching through my old dusty cds looking for AOE.

Formerly a big AOE fan.... playing cossacks made me favor cossacks more. I actually bacame a hardcore online cossacks gamer. Because, well.. this game has horrible AI. So when i look at this game i just see a fun multiplayer game. Don't look for much else from it.
I have been playing cossacks since july and i know whats going on unlike people that maybe play the demo and feel they can give a full judgement. The gameplay is not at all slow. Infact i once played on a 433. no problems at all. and one of my fav aspects is that it can hold 8000 people on the screen. I've had battles of 3000 troops vs 3000. The speed doesnt change much. As for the emphesis on resourses. yes to some degree. To make more you need more. makes sense you know. I give it 4 stars. It is excellent multi player. but the 1 player was rushed and isnt fun at all. And network play is limited. This game is not at all like AOE so if your looking for a similar game. this isnt it. so its not fair to compare and say cossacks (...)just because you like AOE features more

I thought Ages was the best game around until I picked up Cossacks. It's what Age of Empires could never seem to be. Real time strageties, formations, neverending mines (except you gotta keep em protected), great graphics. This game is addictive with a capital A. Play a couple of games on Cossacks and you'll never go back.

Age of Empires warmed over

I had high hopes for Cossacks, given the claims the manufacturers made, but found it to be basically the Age of Empires engine with updated graphics and a different period in time. It has been entertaining to watch how the updated weapons are handled, but the AI is a bit [poor] at times. If you haven't gotten tired of the Age of Empires games then you'll probably like Cossacks. On the other hand, Cossacks does not represent any significant new challenge. You might enjoy the new graphics, the new units, and the new time period, for a while.

I just wantit to say to tis kid that Cossacks does have a map editor and I am seying this so people dont get comfuse. You just press ALT and holding it press INTRO in the main menu... I been playing this game vefore it came out in the usa and its grate i love this game I am looking fowared to buying the addon ART OF WAR... In my opinion this game is alot more better then Age of empires AOE has 200 unit it does not compare whit COSSACKS 8,000 unitsalso the cannos are much more realistic and if you are buying this kind of game I recomend this game cossacks....

Cossacks, one of a kind

The usefullness and ease of unsing formations in cossacks is what sets this game apart from starcraft or warcraft. Cossacks is much more complex. In cossacks hundreds of units march, in formation, into combat. The are an enormous number of upgrades and types of units. The main fault of cossacks is that the towns are to easy to destroy. If one fast calvery unit sneeks into an unguarded portion of town he could kill all the peasants and buildings there, often turning the tide of a game. To avoid this extreamly frusterating part of the game it is necessary to keep small squads of men (3-6 men) all throughout your town. Make sure several members of each squad are ordered to hold their ground lest they should wonder off in chase of one of several attackers. As in many (or all) games the AI is briliant at some things and abysmal at others.

good game, with 1 or 2 drawbacks

It's a small break from AOK, but the configuration makes it seem like SF copied off of one of Microsofts best-sellers. I like the 16-18 c. timeline, because I like the "mass"-troop(generaly speaking) tactics. The first drawback, besides the copy of the config., is that the training costs and speed seems excessive for the time period. The other drawback is that the upkeeps seem excessive because you have to build all these mills and goldmines, and then train peasants to run them, to maintan your army. I think that its a good game, but I also think that you should vist [the website] to download the demo and play it before actually buying the full version.
