Sad Disappointment

I've been a hard-core gamer since the days of Intellivision, and this release is BY FAR the most disappointing video game purchase I have ever made. I loved all of the NES and Super Nintendo Mega Man games. The strategy was simple: a lot of really hard gaming sequences in which you acquired a special weapon or power that you would need later.

I guess Capcom was trying to come up with a Zelda-esque plot line, but this is childish ... and an insult to the Mega Man fan base. Capcom should have created some more mature levels emulating the Super Mario 64 level designs. Instead, they wasted a lot of time on infantile dialogue sequences and shockingly weak graphics. This product was thrown together to sell solely on the name of Mega Man. It is a disgrace.

Don't waste your money

This game is not for adults. I did not take the advice of the editorial review and payed the price. I bought this game because the other mega man games were so cool. Being an experienced gamer, the main thing i had to do was go through the motions until I accomplished the kind of things that amuse twelve year olds. Better off getting Mega Man X for SNES.

Crappiest Game Ever

This game sucks. I really enjoyed the original Mega Man but this game has nothing incomin with the original. First of all the controls are terrible. U cant just turn u have to stop then turn. After awhile this gets very annoying. Second the graphics for this game are very poor. U would think that since Mega Man was gooing 3-D the graphics would be better, well your wrong. the graphics just plain suck. Last the game is really only a little fun for the first 5 minutes u play but after that its very boring. Overall this game is very bad and is not worth buying or even renting. TOTAL DISAPOINTMENT!!!!!!!!!

A Serious Disappointment

I was very disappointed with this game. The graphics are much poorer than other recent N64 titles (e.g., Majora's Mask, Banjo-Tooie), and the play control is the worst I have ever seen on the N64. Mega Man does not move smoothly: if you want to turn right or left, you have to come to a complete stop and swivel in place! And woe to anyone who tries to target by pressing Z and R at the same time and THEN pressing the B button to shoot! This may be a port of an older game, but Capcom should have taken time to update it instead of just coasting off the success of the Mega Man franchise.

The game, by the way, bears no resemblance to the old NES series. You will not encounter Drs. Light or Wily here. There is no Proto Man or dog Rush. And you certainly don't spend the game fighting other robots (e.g., Metal Man, Guts Man) in order to win their powers. This is a Mega Man game in name only. The plotline is different, and only marginally resembles the old series. And don't think you are getting a Zelda-style RPG either, as the review above suggests. Mega Man 64 is far inferior to either Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask.

There is a lot of wasted potential here. The worlds are large, and the story is interesting enough, but the execution is so feeble that it seriously hampers the gaming experience. If you are thinking about buying the game, I would definitely rent it first.

A real dissapointment

I have played all the opther mega man games, and i liked them all. this game is not only a disgrace to the mega man series but it is one of the worst n64 games i have ever played. yes, it is 3d unlike most of the other mega man games, but you will stop liking it quickly, the dialouge is moronic, controls just don't work... i could go on and on....

Okay storyline and sound, but poor graphics and controls.

STORY: 2.5

Not too bad. Not too good, either. Essentially, you're a futuristic treasure hunter (a "digger") who crash-lands on an island and saves the inhabitants from pirate invaders. (Did I mention that you are ten years old?) The story doesn't get any better until much later in the game, when you start exploring subgates and especially at the very end.

CONTROLS: 1

Bad. Really bad. Consider this: in practically every 3-D platformer on Nintendo 64, you use the control stick to go forward, backward, left, and right. Well, not this one. On this one, you use the control stick to go forward and backward, or turn in circles. You use R and Z to go left and right. Now, you can eventually get the hang of this. However, once you do get the hang of it, it is incredibly simplistic. There really is no variation. None of the rolls, slides, or special jumps that you'll see in Super Mario 64 or Donkey Kong 64. Just plain running and jumping.

More odd controls: the action button is C-down, not the beloved A of many other platform-style games. To aim at enemies, you press R and Z simultaneously, a combination so contrived and inconvenient that I choose to ignore it altogether. To use your primary weapon, you press B, which is fine, but to use your secondary weapon, you use C-left, which is just plain odd. You get the idea.

GRAPHICS: 1.5

Antiquated, low-quality graphics. There are some SNES games that have comparable graphic quality. Everything is very low-resolution. Especially odd is the way you can see behind walls whenever you turn in the opposite direction. It is atypical of an N64 game, and I don't really like it.

SOUND: 3.5

Not bad. The music is appropriate and well done. I especially like the Main Gate music. This is one of the few console games that actually has speech. All important character speech is actually audible. Unfortunately, it is not of very high quality. This means that, for example, the huge segments of monologue at the end of the game, although they are very interesting and contribute immensely to the storyline, are practically inaudible. Still, if you turn your volume way up for the speech segments and back to normal for everything else, you should be able to understand most of it.

REPLAYABILITY: 3

Even once you complete the game, there are plenty of subquests to engage on and many items to find. Also, there are two hidden modes (hard mode and easy mode) to play once you beat the game on the standard mode. It's not something that I'd play over and over again, but it's definitely a keeper.

OVERALL: 2

Good points are sound, decent replayability, and a so-so storyline. Bad points are horrible graphics and controls. If you are looking for a good platformer, try something else. But if you already have all the major titles in the genre and are just looking for a few hours of new entertainment, MegaMan 64 is not a bad choice. It should last about eight to ten hours your first time through, and maybe another fifteen or twenty hours of replayability. Although the graphics and controls certainly interfere with gameplay, it's still a very playable game.

Bad bad bad

A have to admit Mega Man games used to be so cool but now they all are just terrible. All the good story lines and boosses have already been used so there down to penguins and vultures.

Be warned - this is NOT a Mega Man game

In recent years, Capcom attempted to bring their classic Mega Man franchise into the new millennium. They gave the series a complete makeover, in a number of ways, and thus, the Legends series was born. How does this, the first game in the Legends series, measure up? Read on and see.

PROS:
-IT'S A FULL 3D GAME. Many fans of the Mega Man series had long been awaiting such a game, and at long last they have one. Well, sort of.
-THERE ARE TONS OF WEAPONS AND ITEMS FOR YOU TO FIND AND USE. The island where the game takes place is filled with ruins which it will take a good deal of time to explore in their entirety.
-THE STORYLINE IS BETTER THAN SOME PEOPLE MAKE IT OUT TO BE. This is NOT really a Mega Man game, but the storyline the game has is an interesting one nonetheless.

CONS:
-THE BIGGEST CON IS THE MOST OBVIOUS ONE - IT ISN'T REALLY A MEGA MAN GAME! Capcom just used a Mega Man look for many of the characters so that they could sell more games. For shame, Capcom.
-THE GRAPHICS ARE HORRIBLE, EVEN FOR A FULL 3D GAME ORIGINALLY MADE FOR THE PLAYSTATION ONE. The characters look like they were made out of paper, and I don't mean that in a good way. The 2D Mega Man games on all other systems had graphics way better than these.
-THE CONTROLS SUCK. If you want to turn, you have to rotate the camera. This becomes extremely annoying in no time at all. There are also several other control faults.
-THE GAME LEAVES TOO MANY QUESTIONS UNANSWERED. If the series really IS somehow connected to the other Mega Man game series, the game fails to tell you how. Likewise, your character's origin is never explained.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a good game, but it wasn't really what I was hoping for. That's not to say you won't have any fun with it - I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. If you find this game in the budget bin, pick it up. It may surprise you.

I played this game as a japanese import. It is so awesome. The graphics are really cool. And the bosses are really cool looking. I liked this because I didn't need to get a playstation to play anymore Mega Man games. My Advice: Buy this game! Right Away! It is really amazing.
